INTRODUCTION

a ground-based, active imaging method that rapidly

acquires accurate, dense 3D point clouds of object surfaces
by laser range-finding (Lichti, 2015).
3D TLS is a ground based technique to measure the position
and dimension of objects in the 3D space (Dominik Seidel,
2013).
TLS technology is used to obtain the geometric parameters of
the object and is based on the spatial coordinates
measurement of points on its surface.
A laser beam is emitted from a laser light source and used to
scans the surface of surrounding objects in a raster-wise
manner.
INTRODUCTION

Detail Survey/Topographic Survey is the process of recording

precise three dimensional information of a real world object
or environment (Michael Grear, 2007).
TLS provides high resolution topographic data by measuring
the reflect of laser fired from a scanner to the terrain. By
sweeping a laser beam over a scene or object, the laser
scanner is able to record millions of 3D points.
Thus, the initial output from TLS is a high density point cloud
captured at a rate of thousands of points per second.

WORK FLOW IN DETAIL SURVEY
USING TLS

Collect data
Able to capture the data 1
million per seconds

Capture x,y,z values

The laser capturing

will be cover 360
degree.
Able to capture the
topographic features
with so detail

The instrument can

collect the data
automatically

CAPABILITIES & LIMITATIONS USING
TLS IN DETAL SURVEY

Day and night operation.

Far more accurate detail captured for the ground model.
Reduces the field work several times.
Completeness of the data minimizes the probability of the
lack of any required information, thereby increasing quality
and decreasing turnaround time.
Capture of large number of points increases accuracy of
final data derived.
Mapping of inaccessible areas/slopes/high steeps.

Scanning would have been more difficult in marginal

weather.
A couple of minor shadow areas existed in the model where
detail was not as complete as the rest of the model
The cost of the method quite expensive rather than using
traditional method.
Bulky equipment (including cables, laptop and battery) to
move in and out of trench.
OUTCOME OF USING TLS

Real Sites 3D Model

CONCLUSION

Every detail matters will be scan very fast by refer to the

combination of speed, range and accuracy and ruggedness.
If perform a construction project, it can reduce risk and scan
from the safe place.
Release scene at computer anytime to verify the
measurement that couldnt see enough.
Monitoring survey become more comprehensive.
Topographic survey will be so detailed and complete.
High accuracy mapping based on reality capture.
At some point, it can be difficult to handle because of the
bulky instruments and it will take some time in editing.
