    Slow sand filters remove bacteria, color, and taste from water through filtration. They consist of an enclosed tank containing layers of sand, gravel, and an underdrain system. Water passes through 90-110 cm of sand, which is supported on 30-75 cm of gravel consisting of different sized layers. The underdrain system collects the filtered water through a central drain connected to lateral drains.     FILTRATION :

    The process of passing the water through a


    thick layer of sand or other granular materials
    which acts as a strainer for removing
    bacteria,colour, and taste etc. is known as filtration
    CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
    Slow sand filter consist of following parts :

    Enclosure tank
    Filter media
    Base material
    Under Drain System
    Inlet and outlet arrangement
    Other appurtenances
    Enclosure Tank .
    It consist of an open water tight rectangular tank, made of
    masonry or concrete.
    The bed slope is kept at about 1 in 100 toward central drain
    The depth of tank may vary from 2.5 to 3m.
    Area of tank may vary from 100 to 2000 sq.m.

    Filter Media.
    Filter media should be consist of sand layer about 90 to 110cm
    in a depth and placed over gravel support
    The effective size of sand varies from 0.2 to 0.4mm and
    uniformity coefficient { D60/D10 } varies from 1.8 to 2.5or 3.
    Base Material
    The base material is gravel and it supports the sand. It
    consists of 30 to 75cm thick gravel of diff. sizes place in layers.
    Generally 3 to 4 layers each of 15 -20cm depth are used.
    Top layer gravel size 3 to 6 mm.
    Intermediate layer 20 to 40 mm .
    Bottom layer 40 to 65 mm.

    Under Drain system


    It is constructed in the bottom of the filter tank to collect the
    filtered water . It gives base to the gravel layer.
    It consists of a central drain which is connected by lateral
    drain. Lateral are open jointed pipe drains or some other kind of
    porous drain placed 3 to 5 m apart from the bottom floor.
    Other appurtenances
    Beside these arrangement certain other appurtenances are provided for
    efficient functioning of these filter .
    For example :
    Vertical air pipe passing through the layers of
    sand may be provided, and may help in proper functioning of the filtering
    layers.
    Results obtained :
    The following are the characteristics of water
    filtered from slow sand filter.
    Rate of filtration 100 200 ltrs /hours /m sq. of filter area
    Suspended matter Almost nil
    Bacteria removal -98% to 99%
    Turbidity Removal -50 PPMs
    Colour Removal -30PPM
    Odour Almost fully removed
