GARDEN CITIES

GARDEN CITY MOVEMENT :

The garden city movement is a method of urban
planning that was initiated in 1898 bySir Ebenezer
Howardin the United Kingdom.
PRINCIPLES

Strong community engagement

Community ownership of land
Mixed-tenure homes and housing types that are genuinely
affordable
A wide range of local jobs within easy commuting distance
of homes
Well designed homes with gardens, combining the best of
town and country
Green infrastructure that enhances the natural environment
Strong cultural, recreational and shopping facilities
Integrated and accessible transport
INTENSIONS OF PLANNING GARDEN
CITIES
Self-contained communities surrounded by "greenbelts",
containing proportionate areas of residences, industry
and agriculture.
Ideally his garden city would accommodate 32,000
people on a site of 6,000 acres
These cities are planned on a concentric pattern with
open spaces, public parks.
Howard wanted to control what he called the smoke
fiend of polluting transport, which was already blighting
cities at the turn of the century.
main features of howards scheme were:
he purchase of a large area of agricultural land within a ring fence
he planning of a compact town surrounded by a wide rural belt
The accommodation of residents, industry, and agriculture within the town
The limitation of the extent of the town and prevention of encroachment upon th
rural belt.
he natural rise in land values to be used for the towns own general welfare.

The garden city is located in north Hertfordshire, 35 miles north
ofLondon.

ORIGINS OF THE NAME GARDEN CITY'

Legend in 17th century ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore, Hyder Ali, liked
the cool Bangalore climate.
So he planned a garden that was named after his beloved sister Lal Bi.
The garden he built is none other than the famous Lal Bagh Gardens that
is still visited by many in the city.
Until the early 21st Century, Bangalore was known for the canopies of
trees that lined its busy roads
This abundance of greenery earned it the nickname, GARDEN CITY OF
INDIA.
