Rotary Percussive Drilling
The rotary-percussion drill combines
both rotary(grinding) and
percussive(chipping and hammering)
action.

Drill bit mounted on the end of a

rotating string of rods, which cuts and
breaks the rock.
There are striking shaft and rotary shaft ,
striking shaft receives blows from pistons
and transmits them to drill bits.

Striker shaft is rotated by a rotary shaft , it

does not transmit the blows to the latter.

Each rotation provides new surface to the

drill bits to strike.
Rotation control at surface
The bit penetrates the rock under axial
thrust, rotational torque, along with the
action of impulsive blow, a combination of
chipping and breaking of rock is achieved.

Rotary percussion drilling usually requires

compressed air, which has dual function, to
drive the drill bit and also flush out the
cuttings produced.

This rotary percussive drilling can be used

for medium and hard strata only.
