Pottery

Things you need to know about making objects

out of clay

The Properties of Clay

Plasticity -To be usable, clay has to have the ability to hold
its form while at the same time be pliable enough to be
moved by the potters hands.
Porosity - Clay has to dry without cracking. A clay, to be
usable by the potter, must be porous(or coarse) enough to
allow the water to escape evenly from all parts of the
ware.
Vitrification - is the process of becoming glasslike

Pottery is fired in Kilns

High temperatures vitrify the

clay.

Pyrometric Cones

When clay is fired to a high temperature it can crack

if you arent careful when you make your piece.

5 Ways to Prevent Explosions

Wedge clay before you make anything

Air dry pieces for as long as possible.
Create a hole for steam to escape in hollow forms.
Dont build thicker than 1 inch.
Fire using a long preheat.
Fire slow.

Clay Particles are Disk Shaped.

Wedging Clay (Day 1)

How to make a pinch pot out of a

small ball of clay. (Day 2)

The first step to making your pinch pot is to

start the opening. Cradle the ball of clay in
one hand and gently press the end of your
thumb into the clay.

The idea is to gently press the clay from the

inside with your thumb against your fingers
on the outside. Each time you press a bit
with your thumb, give the clay a bit of a turn
before you press again.

If you curve your fingers slightly, you can control the

shape a bit better and make a more rounded form.

The main thing to remember while working is to try for an

even wall thickness as you pinch your way around the bowl.

You can create texture on the outside of the

pot if you wish by pressing objects into the
wall or by carving some patterns onto the
surface. You can also make it shiny by
burnishing the surface with a small stone.

Score and Slip to attach a handle to

your cup.

Score both surfaces you want to

attach.

Both pieces are rough.

Slip is a mixture of clay and

water.

Coat both rough surfaces with

slip.

Join the 2 scored and slipped pieces

together.

This is only the beginning of the

attachment.

Next, smooth the seam between the

joined pieces.

Roll and score a coil and score the

seam you have just joined.

Smooth the coil into the seam.

You have a strong attachment.

Make a practice pinch rattle

Make two pinch pots.
Make some small clay beads. Put the clay beads inside the
pinch pots before you connect them.
Connect the pinch pots together by scoring and slipping.
Carve the outside of the rattle and poke a hole.

Pinch Pot Animal or Nature Form

Sketch some pictures in your sketchbook.

Must use 3 or more pinch pots to create your animal.
Use textures
Score and slip to join the pieces
Why is this animal important to you? Can you tell a story
through this animal?
