HATSHEPSUT

Religious Policy and Relationship with


Amun

Who is Amun-Ra?
Originally one of eight gods who formed the Ogdoad. He was a god of
air.
By 12th Dynasty he was the King God
Hatshepsut claimed Amun, while in guise of Thutmose II, impregnated
her
Mother.
Usually depicted as blue but in a human form.

The Beginning of their


Relationship

Started when she was young, Gods Wife of Amun and Divine Consort of
Amun
She wanted to strengthen the relationship between Amun and the
pharaoh. Amenhotep II & Ramesses II copied this idea.
Hatshepsut encourage a more intimate and regular worship of the gods,
even claiming all the altars are opened and everyone [every god] is in
possession of the dwelling he has loved, his Ka rests upon his throne.

Allowed her to justify her rule and place as daughter of Amun.

Divine Birth and Justification of her reign
I am his [Amun-Ra] daughter in very
truth, who works for him and knows
what he desires. My reward from my
father is life, stability, dominion upon the
Horus throne of all the Living, like Ra,
forever. (Hatshepsut)
Amun, the Lord of Thebes; he caused
that I should reign over the Black and
Red Land. (Hatshepsut) Divine Birth Amun
feeding her the
ankh of life. Justified
her rule and shows
that she is the
daughter of Amun.

Held the Barque and the Amun
Statue
The Red Chapel played a
significant role in Hatshepsut's
political and religious programs as
the decorations in the chapel told
the story of her coronation, the
Opet and Sed festivals, and the
dedication of the obelisks.

to Punt
Oh my father, who devises everything
that exists, what is it that you desire to
happen? I shall certainly act according
to your plans. (From her coronation
inscription)
She claimed that Amun commanded
the trading expedition to Punt, made
her mistress of Punt, received the
tribute of Punt and promised her
success for future expeditions.

"The majesty of the palace


made petition at the stairs of the
Lord of the Gods. A command
was heard from the Great
Throne, an oracle of the god
himself, to search out ways to
Punt, to explore the roads to the
terraces of myrrh"
