Sunshine Skyway Bridge,

Florida

Problem:
Build a multi-lane bridge for
commuters and tourists
Span: 2,000 feet
Crossing: River
Connects: City and major
highway

Special Notes:
"I want a one-of-a-kind bridge that will span our
beautiful river and welcome visitors from all over the
world to our thriving city. Make sure the new bridge
leaves enough room for sailboats on the river. Please
don't build a bridge that looks like the
Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or the
Brooklyn Bridge in New York."
~[Mayor of City]

What kind of bridge should you build?

Drawbridge
A drawbridge is the best choice for this
location. Drawbridges, like the Tower
Bridge in London, England, can be quite
majestic. They're also practical because
they open to allow the passage of boats
and ships. The mayor is delighted with
your selection!

But there is
a problem!!!

Convenience & Beauty!!

In one of the rowdiest town meetings ever,
the residents of City spoke out against the
new drawbridge. "It's ugly," one angry
resident said, "and there's always traffic on
the bridge. They open it for boats, but what
about us? We have to get to work, too!"

Which bridge will you choose?

The mayor is begging you to build a new bridge. The

local steelworkers are on strike, so she advises you
to build a bridge with as little steel as possible.

Cable-Stayed Bridge
Great Choice! It is one of the most popular bridge
types in recent years. The roadway hangs from cables
like a suspension bridge, forming a unique "A"
shape. The mayor is happy because the bridge is
made mostly of concrete, a relatively cheap material.
The residents are thrilled because ships can pass
beneath the bridge without causing traffic jams!

Cable-Stayed Bridges
A typical cable stayed bridge is a deck with one or two
pylons erected above the piers in the middle of the span.
The cables are attached diagonally to the girders. The
long span bridges are generally built and designed to
cross deep valley, wide rivers and sea bays.

Cable-Stayed Bridges
The stay cable is commonly made of conventional high
strength steel wires.
Resulting in significant sagging effect due to its selfweight
In addition, corrosion and fatigue are two major
problems for the conventional steel cable

Dynamic behavior of a cable stayed bridge

using CFRP cables
ABSTRACT
The aim is to determine the dynamic behavior of a cable
stayed bridge which has been built by using fiber reinforced
polymer cables in lieu of steel.
The Jindo Bridge is chosen and schemed using CFRP
cables.
Except for the sectional properties of the cables, other
design parameters of the Jindo Bridge was considered the
same.
Yarmca Petro-chemistry Institution acceleration records of
1999 Kocaeli Earthquake are utilized as ground motion.
The calculated displacements and internal forces occurring
in the tower and deck are examined.
Both principle of equivalent cable stiffness and equivalent
cable strength are used to determine the cross-sectional
areas of CFRP cables.

APPLICATION
The bridge consists of two A shaped towers. The bridge cables
was arranged in a fan configuration and merged at the top of the
A-frame towers.
The diameters of the cables are 56 mm, 67 mm, 76mm and 87
mm. Each carries 24 cables and the towers are 69m height above
the piers where they are supported.

Two-dimensional finite
element model is
considered (Figure 2).
The materials and section
properties of the existing
bridge used in the finite
element model are given in
Table 2.
Time history analysis

Conclusion

It is concluded from this study that the use of CFRP

cables is feasible for the cable stayed bridges.

With the usage of CFRP cables, load carrying capacity

can be increased.

Frequencies of CFRP cables are higher than those of

Steel cables. Therefore, CFRP cables can prevent the
cable bridge from coupling vibration problem.
