NATIONAL SALT

IODIZATION
PROGRAM:
CONFERENCEAN
OVERVIEW
OVERVIEW

Iodine is essential for healthy brain

development in the fetus and young
child. Iodine deficiency negatively
affects the health of women, as well
as economic productivity and quality
of life.
Requirements: 150 g/day of iodine
200 g /day
to tsp iodized salt per day= 200
g

Benefits of Iodine

Improved Thyroid Function

Improved Brain Function
Healthy Pregnancies
Fights Depression
Weight Control
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Improved Appearance
Removes Toxins
Fights Cancer
Heart Health

Iodine deficiency is the main cause

of brain damage in childhood. It
results in impaired cognitive and
motor development which affects a
childs performance at school. In
adulthood, it affects productivity and
the ability to find a job. Iodinedeficient people may forfeit 15 IQ
points, and nearly 50 million people
suffer from some degree of iodine
deficiency-related brain damage.

The latest global estimate is that

1.88 billion people, including 241
million school-age children have
insufficient dietary iodine intake (1).
Even if iodine deficiency may be
more severe in developing
countries, it equally affects
developed and developing countries.

The indicator of iodine deficiency elimination is a median value

of 100 g/L, that is , 50% of the sample should be above 100 g/L,
and not more than 20% of the samples should be below 50 g/L.

Severe iodine deficiency

Adequate iodine nutrition
Likely to provide adequate intake for

Risk of adverse health consequences
(iodine induced hyperthyroidism,
autoimmune thyroid diseases)

* Applies to adults, but not to pregnant women
