Development of Surfaces
 Development is the graphical process of producing a flat pattern
from drawings of a curved surface.

 Developments are produced by unrolling or unfolding the

surfaces of an object.

 The process of making a pattern from the dimensions of a

drawing. Used to fabricate sheet metal objects.

 Not all surfaces lend themselves to development; any surface

with a compound curve cannot be developed.

Development of Surfaces
 Sheetmetal drawings are also known as sheet metal
developments or pattern drawings.

 Thesedrawings are used to construct various sheet

metal items, such as ducts for heating, ventilation, and
air-conditioning systems; flashing, valleys, and
downspouts in buildings; and parts on boats, ships,
and aircraft .

 From the development we can easily calculate the size

of metal sheet of an object.

Development of a Cube
 There
are six faces of Cube, the 3D and 2D views are
shown in figure.

Development of a Cone

M. Jawad Qarni, FME, GIK Institute 9 of 19

Development of Cone (Calculations)
Radius, R = 20mm
Slant edge length, L = 100mm
Circumference, 2 ΠR = 2 * 3.14 * 20
= 125.71 mm

Now angle (θ) of arc for cone

S=r*θ
(here r = L, S = 2 p R)

θ = S/r = 125.71/100 = 1.2571 radians

θ = 1.2571 * (180/3.14) = 72 degrees
