Any real or potential conditions produced by

industries that can cause injury or death to
personnel or loss of product or property

Mechanical hazards
Chemical Hazards
Electrical Hazards
Fire & Explosion Hazards
Dust Hazards

Occurs near any moving parts of a machine

Source of Mechanical Hazards
The point of operation - cutting, shaping,
boring, punching
Power transmission apparatus- pulleys, belts,
chains
Other moving parts- rotating, reciprocating,
transverse

Prevent Contact
Secure
Protect from falling objects
Allow safe lubrication

Source of Chemical Hazards

Vapors or

Gases produced from solvents

used in extraction of plants, purification of
synthetic drugs & in chemical analysis
Liquid chemicals if spilled on workers

Chemical

hazard

pocket

guide

should

be

consulted
No drinking, eating or smoking where chemicals
are kept or used
Skin should be covered with protective clothing
Face mask may used
Workers must be changed routinely
Proper ventilation
Workers should immediately be removed if any
problem arises

Caused as a result of contact with electric

energy
Electrical injuries consist of four types:

Electrocution (Fatal), shock, burns & fall

EFFECT OF ELECTRIC CURRENT IN

HUMAN

CURRENT (milliampere)

EFFECT

Above 10 mA

Paralyze or freeze muscle

(muscle become stiff)

Above 30 mA

Respiratory Paralysis

Above 75 mA

Ventricular Fibrillation
(very rapid, ineffective
heartbeat)

Above 5 A

Burning of tissues occurs

Never pull or jerk the cord to unplug the

equipment
Cracked or exposed wiring must be corrected
Electrical equipment causing shocks or which
has leakage potential must be tagged with a
DANGER or DO NOT USE label.

Types of fire:
Class A Fires ordinary combustible materials
Class B Fires flammable petroleum products
Class C Fires energized electrical equipment
Class D Fires combustible metals
Fire Extinguishers:
Fire extinguishing agents work by:
Removal of fuel by blanketing with foam
By removal of oxygen by diluting with inert gases or
vapour
By removal of heat by cooling

Sources of dust hazards

Grinding or milling
Weighing
Powder mixing
Coating operation
Capsule filing and tablet punching operation

Filtration : Filter medium like paper, felt,

wool, cotton and nylon

Inertial Separator: eg- Cyclone Separator
Electrostatic Precipitators: consists of metal
tubes though which a conductor wire is
passed. Several thousand volts of DC current
is applied on the metal wire. When dust air is
passed through the pipes the dust particals
becomes charged & precipitates.
