Shop Attire
Closed toed shoes/No Sandals
No Long Sleeves
No Long Necklaces or chains
No Baggy clothing

Basic Shop Rules


No running
No Horse play
No more than 2 people at one machine at one

time, unless specified at specific machines


Safety glasses must be worn at all times while
in the shop
Use push sticks at all times
Must pass shop safety quiz prior to working in
shop

General Machine Safety


Clean off machine before and after use
When needing blade change, unplug machine,

and get teacher


In case of injury contact teacher as soon as
possible
Make sure work area is clean when you are
done with the machine

Band Saw Safety


Let blade come to full speed before cutting
Open vent prior to making first cut
When making a narrow cut use a push stick to

keep fingers away from the blade


If band breaks, unplug machine, and get
instructor
Turn machine off before backing blade out of
cut
Do not touch blade when machine is
running/plugged in

Table Saw Safety


Allow blade to come to full speed before making first

cut
Open vent prior to making cuts
Always have kick back guard set up behind you
before making a cut
Never leave machine with blade running
Always use push sticks if hands will be closer than 4
to the blade
Never run with blade at its full height
Use Cross Cutting sled when making cuts against the
grain

Dado Saw
When adding or subtracting blades, unplug

machine, and get instructor


Open vent prior to cutting
Allow blade(s) to come to full speed prior to
making cuts
Always use a sacrificial fence on narrow cuts
To check depth of cut, use a piece of scrap
wood from the bin before testing on your
project

Power/Cordless Drill
Allow drill bit to come to full speed prior to drilling
When changing bits, make sure to unplug drill, use

proper chuck key, and make sure bit is centered


Do not touch bit when drill is operational
Clamp work piece to a table to secure work prior to
drilling
Do not use drill if cord is frayed
Do not put drill back if it doesnt work and/or is
damaged. Notify instructor in case drill is damaged

Drill Press
Unplug machine prior to changing drill bit
Allow bit to come to full speed prior to making

first hole
Use chuck key that is attached to the
machine. If key is missing notify instructor
Do not walk away from machine with bit still
turning
Clamp try prior to drilling
Make sure bit is centered prior to using

Palm Sander
Allow sander to get up to full speed prior to

sanding
Secure work to flat table prior to sanding
Use proper sanding grit for application
Use proper sanding pad for the sander (circle
pad = square sander = bad)
Unplug sander prior to changing sanding pad
If sander doesnt work, notify instructor, do
not put back in cupboard

Plainer
Make sure blades are at full speed prior to

inserting work piece


Use push stick if project is stuck
Do not plain wood less than thick
Do not plain piece if less than 14 long
without notifying instructor
Must have used Jointer prior to using Plainer
Do not stick hands or fingers into machine
Open exhaust vent prior to using

Jointer
Allow blades to come to full speed prior to

running work piece


Open vent prior to making first pass
DO NOT adjust height of blades without
notifying instructor first
Always Joint the cupped side first, then joint
the edge
If board is more than 3 long, get fellow
student or instructor to help feed board
through the Jointer

Chop Saw
Make sure blade is at full speed prior to

making first cut


When making a cut come out, then down with
the saw
Make sure work surface is clean before
making cut to keep cuts straight
If having difficulty with machine, unplug, then
contact instructor
Make sure blade guard is in place prior to
using
