Hybrid Vehicle Technology

Aim Introduction Market Hybrid Basics Primary Factors to Improve Efficiency Hybrid Classifications Go Greener Advantages Conclusion

AIM
Brief Knowledge on Hybrid Vehicle Technology.

INTRODUCTION
Two sources of motive energy.
Mostly combines an internal combustion engine and electric motors.

Many types of HEV exist, and the degree to which they function as EVs varies as well.

MARKET
Ferdinand Porsche in 1900 developed the Lohner Porsche Mixte Hybrid Not become widely available until the Toyota PRIUS in Japan in 1997

Increases in the price of petroleum caused many automakers to release hybrids in the late 2000

HYBRID BASICS

Primary Factors to Improve Efficiency

Electric Motor Drive/Assist
Start/Stop Regenerative Braking Transmission Optimization

Electric Motor Drive/Assist

The electric motor propels the vehicle during lowspeed acceleration from stop and during cruising. It also assist in sudden acceleration, high-speed passing or hill climbing. This allows a smaller internal combustion engine to function at levels previously unattainable.

Start/Stop
The hybrid system automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop. Restarts with the motor and battery when the vehicle launches or accelerates, preventing wasted energy from idling.

Regenerative Braking
When braking, the motor captures the energy from the wheels. Function as a generator to convert heat to electricity

The electricity is stored in the battery until needed. Normal braking recharges the hybrid battery.

Transmission Optimization
The function is to deliver power for a wide range of loads and output speeds By changing the gear ratio, the transmission makes better use of the engines power as driving conditions change.

An electronically controlled transmission that vary engine and motor speeds in infinite combinations. Uses a power-split device to replace the traditional mechanical transmission.

Less robust solutions include Continuous variable transmissions (CVTs) provide a wide range of gear ratios.
Dual clutch transmissions provide more gear ratios but less than a CVT. Conventional transmission, deliver less performance and fuel savings than an e-CVT, CVT or dual clutch transmission.

Improvement These enables hybrid vehicles to achieve 20% to 80% gains in overall fuel efficiency.
The performance improvement are also due to: Electric motors ability to produce instantaneous torque and relatively fast acceleration from stop.

To work with the engine to generate high output at high speeds.

HYBRID CLASSIFICATIONS
Based upon power train:
Series Hybrid Parallel Hybrid Series/Parallel Hybrid

Based upon level of electric power:

Full hybrids Mild hybrids Weak hybrids

Series Hybrid Engine used to drive an electric generator that provides electricity for an electric motor that moves the wheels. Only the motor drives the wheels.

Parallel Hybrid Engine and the electric motor can drive the wheels independently or concurrently. The battery is not automatically recharged.

Series/parallel Hybrid Combines both systems Allows both engine and motor to drive the vehicle.

Level of electric power Full hybrids Mild hybrids Weak hybrids

GO GREENER
Emissions of harmful gases are very less. Less noise pollution. The oil fuels and gasoline consumption

ADVANTAGES
Improved fuel efficiency and performance Unlike bio-fuel vehicles, hybrids do not require special pumps at refueling stations. Unlike all electric vehicles, hybrids do not limit driving range. Rapid technology evolution across the vehicle industry.

CONCLUSION Soon be seeing hybrid vehicles taking over conventional vehicles in terms of power, efficiency, eco-friendly nature and price.
