Planets

Sun Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto
The Sun is a star - it is not a
planet.
The Sun is so big that you could fit
more than 1 million Earths inside
of it!
FUN FACT:
The Sun is also the only star we
see during the daytime.
Distance from Sun: 36,000,000 miles
Diameter: 3,310 miles
This planet is called Mercury.
Mercury is a small, rocky planet, 36 million
miles from the sun.
Mercury has no moons.
FUN FACT:
Did you know that Mercury whizzes around the
Sun at 30 Miles per second?
Distance from Sun: 67,250,000 miles
Diameter: 75,200 miles
This is Venus.
Venus is a small, rocky planet with a very hot
surface.
Venus has no moons.
FUN FACT:
Venus is the closest planet to Earth.
Distance From Sun: 93,000,000 miles
Diameter: 80,000 miles
This is Earth.
Earth is a small, rocky planet which we live on!
The Earth is orbited by one moon, and is 93 million
miles away from the Sun.
FUN FACT:
Did you know that the average year is actually 365
days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45.51 seconds??
.
Earth
Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the fifth largest:

The Earth is 4.5 to 4.6 billion years old

Earth rotates around its axis (in a counter-

clockwise direction, when viewed looking down
on the North Pole), producing sequencial
periods of daylight and night.
The period of rotation defines the day, one of
Earth's natural time scales. Earth's rate of
rotation is relatively rapid, that is, there are
many rotations (days) in one revolution (year).

This tilt gives rise to the seasons.

For most of recorded history the
Earth was the center of the
universe and never moved. The
constellations were named and
stories were told about them. The
Greek Aristotle wrote in the third
century BC that the Earth was a
sphere because different stars
could be seen as you move north
and south and the shadow of the
Earth on the moon during an
eclipse was curved. A hundred or
so years later, Eratosthenes used
the length of the shadow cast by
the sun to determine the
circumference of the Earth.
Distance from Sun: 141,700,000 miles

Diameter: 4,200 miles

This is Mars
Mars is a cold, rocky planet and has two very
small moons which orbit close to the surface.
Mars is 141 million miles from the sun and is red
in colour.
FUN FACT:
Did you know that a 100 pound object on Earth
would weigh 85 pounds on Mars?
Distance From Sun: 483,700,000 miles
Diameter: 88,700 miles
This planet is called Jupiter.
Jupiter is a very big planet which has 16
moons!
Jupiter is 483 million miles away from the sun.
FUN FACT:
Did you know that if you are 12 years old on
the planet Earth, you would only be 1 year old
if you were on Jupiter??
Distance from Sun: 885,200,000 miles

Diameter: 74,600 miles

This is Saturn.
Saturn has 18 moons and is over 800
million miles away from the Sun.
Saturn has rings around it made up of ice.
FUN FACT:
Did you know that the particles of the rings
vary in size from grains of sugar to the size
of a house?
Distance from Sun: 1,781,000,000 miles
Diameter: 31,570 miles
This is Uranus.
Uranus is a giant gas planet which is over 1 billion
miles away.
Uranus has 15 moons
FUN FACT:
The only trip to Uranus was by the U. S. Voyager
11 which flew by the planet in 1986.
Distance from Sun: 2,788,000,000 miles
Diameter: 30,200 miles
This is Neptune.
Neptune is a giant gas planet and has 8
moons.
Neptune is over 2 billion miles away from the
sun.
FUN FACT:
Did you know that every 238 years Pluto and
Neptune switch places making
Distance from Sun: 3,660,000,000 miles
Diameter: 1,900 miles
This planet is called Pluto.
Pluto is over 3 billion miles away from the
sun and has one moon.
Pluto is the only planet that has not been
visited by a spacecraft.
FUN FACT:
Pluto is the farthest planet from the sun.
