Method study 1: layout of finishing department

Method study
Objective: to study the layout of the finishing department and make improvements. Method used: top view of the layout made to study the travelling distance of the material.

Process flow of finishing department

Garments come from the stitching department Button holes are made using button hole machine Snap buttons attached Buttons and trims are attached in hand stitching section Thread trimming done in trimming section Measurements of the garments and other defects checked in quality check section. If not correct sent to stitching department Spotting is done Pressing of the garments Folding, packaging and label attachment Sent to storage department/ parcel packing

Present layout of finishing department

Present layout of finishing department

In the present layout of the finishing department the sections are not arranged according to the process flow of the finishing department. They are arranged haphazardly which increases the travelling distance hence increasing the time required.

Proposed layout of finishing department

In the proposed layout of the finishing department the sections are arranged according to the process flow of the department. This decreases the travelling distance hence decreasing the time required. As the sections are arranged according to the process flow, it brings a continuous flow in the movement of the materials from one section to another.

Method study 2: process of double fold hem

Method study
Objective: to study the process of double fold hem and to improve the accuracy and speed. Method used: man type flow charts and two handed charts to study the present process.

Man type flow chart of the present process

Reach the panel Pick the panel Place the panel on the machine Make two folds at the edge for the hem Hold the fold Raise the presser foot of the machine Place the folded part under the presser foot Backtack using lever backtack Sew to hold

Continue to make two folds at the edge and stiching Backtack using lever backtack

Raise presser foot and remove the panel Trim the threads using a scissor

Proposed process for double fold hem

A hemming presser foot can be used to make the double fold hem. With the use a hemming presser foot there will be greater accuracy in the hem and also reduction in the time required as it is fast and accurate A machine can be fitted with a hemming presser foot and the hems of many garments can be done together with accuracy and speed. A hemming presser foot is within the cost of the small scale industry.

Man type flow chart of the proposed process

Reach the panel Pick the panel Make two folds at the edge for the double fold hem Hold the fold Raise the presser foot Put the fold under the presser foot Sew to hold Raise the presser foot

Pull the fabric into the scroll, up and to the left (the needle should catch the inner fold) Use left hand to keep the fabric in correct distance from the edge Use other hand to control the fabric to be fed Backtack using lever backtack Raise the presser foot and remove the panel Trim the threads using a thread cutter
