ELT METHODOLOGY
The audio-lingual method was widely used in the United States and other countries in the 1950's and 1960's. It is still used in some programs today. Also known as Aural-Oral Method/The Army Method/ The New Method
Theory of language: The Structural view of language is the view behind the audio-lingual method. Particular emphasis was laid on mastering the building blocks of language and learning the rules for combining them
Theory of learning: Behaviorism, including the following principles: language learning is habit-formation mistakes are bad and should be avoided, as they make bad habits language skills are learned more effectively if they are presented orally first, then in written form analogy is a better foundation for language learning than analysis the meanings of words can be learned only in a linguistic and cultural context

Objectives: accurate pronunciation and grammar ability to respond quickly and accurately in speech situations knowledge of sufficient vocabulary to use with grammar patterns.
The Audiolingual Methods principles: Speaking and listening competence preceded reading and writing competence. Use of MT is highly discouraged in the classroom. The development of language skills is a matter of habit formation. Students practice particular patterns of language through structured dialogue and drill until response is automatic. Structured patterns in language are taught using repetitive drills.

The Audiolingual Methods principles (cont): The emphasis is on having students produce error free utterances. This method of language learning supports kinesthetic learning styles. Only everyday vocabulary and sentences are taught. Concrete vocabulary is taught through demonstration, objects, and pictures. Abstract vocabulary is taught through association of ideas. The printed word must be kept away from the second language learner as long as possible

The syllabus: Audiolingualism uses a structural syllabus Types of learning techniques and activities: dialogues drills
Procedure: Here is a typical procedure in an audio-lingual course: Students hear a model dialogue Students repeat each line of the dialogue Certain key words or phrases may be changed in the dialogue Key structures from the dialogue serve as the basis for pattern drills of different kinds. The students practice substitutions in the pattern Iskandar ELT Method Lesson 7 (4) drills
Other techniques/activities/strategies: 1. Dialog Memorization short dialogue given, Ss practise in role-play 2. Transformation Drill transform question into statement, vice versa 3. Complete the Dialog - fill in the blanks in the dialogs provided 4. Dictation read aloud literature at Ss level, Ss write 5. Flashcards brainstorm word on a card 6. Chain Drill T asks 1st S, 1st S answers then turns to 2nd S and asks, chain continues
