MEET THE CAST
Treashana Baker: Dynamite Treashana is from Little Rock, AK. She loves music and singing and is very
involved in the Choir and Praise Team at Living Waters Kingdom Church. Aside from music, Treashana enjoys
cooking, eating, traveling, dancing, shopping and most importantly spending time with family and friends. She
is very excited to be in Hairspray because she gets to share the stage with her church members whom she
loves very much. This is her very first show and she's having the time of her life!

Stephen Banks: Stooie This is Stephen’s first production at TCR. Prior musical experience includes Jesus
Christ, Superstar, Guys and Dolls, Secret Garden, Urinetown, and Big River. When Stephen isn’t performing in
a musical he sings a cappella in a band named “Sunday Afternoon”. The Cedar Rapids-based band travels the
Midwest performing at fairs, festivals, and competitions. He thanks his family and friends for their love and
support. Most of all, he thanks his mother for always being there for him. He hopes they enjoy the show!

Mark Baumann: Wilbur Turnblad This is Mark Baumann’s first appearance on the TCR stage, but he has
played the Barton theater organ before for TCR productions. Mark sells promotional products, trophies and
laser work for American Specialties and is a local Director Consultant for Business Network International. He
also is an adjunct instructor in music for Kirkwood Community College, Principal Organist at St. Paul’s United
Methodist Church and Saturday Organist at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, both in Cedar Rapids. He is
motivated to perform due to the “timeless” support of his wife Marcia, their three daughters, Maria, Meghann
and Meredith and a cast of friends.

Karl Becker: Corny Collins Hairspray is Karl Becker’s first time onstage. Acting has been a lifelong ambition
of Karl's, and since he has recently taken the plunge to be a self-employed iPhone app developer, he decided
it was also time to explore his acting ability. His performance is in honor of his mother, Linda, who helped him
understand the importance of living the life you want, and his father, Gaylynn, who is a role model for honest,
selfless hard work and perseverance.

Clayton Besong: Gilbert Clayton Besong has been around Cedar Rapids for most of his life. His
theatrical/musical experience has been limited to being a violinist with the orchestra pit for productions and has
inched closer to the theater "big stage" by being part of a stage crew for a Playtime Poppy production - both
occurring during his tenure at Washington High School. His prodigious appetite for music has always been
satisfied as far back as he can remember by being a member of orchestras and a wide variety of choirs.
Clayton has a B.A. in Medical Informatics with a minor in Music Performance from Knox College, and is
currently a Systems Analyst at Mercy Medical Center.

Rachel Brandt: Lou Ann This is Rachel’s first appearance on the TCR stage since she was a member of the
children’s chorus. She loves to sing and dance and has recently been seen in Kennedy High School’s Fame.
Her senior year this fall will be filled with show choir and the varsity dance team at Kennedy. She hopes you
enjoy the show!

Jay Burken: Fender Jay is back at TCR as the resident ginger and honorary Black woman. He is thrilled to
be a part of this incredibly talented cast and he thanks the entire directing team for casting him in this show.
Jay really hopes you enjoy Hairspray as much as he has enjoyed rehearsing it! He asks you to please forgive
the white people for pretending to sing with the unbelievable gospel talent you are about to see. Special
shout-out to his friends who have always believed in him and encouraged him to follow his heart!

Cameron Byrd: Duane Cameron has been a part of many TCR shows, and has loved every moment of each
one. First “Tom Collins” in Rent in 2010, he has also been in Guys and Dolls, A Christmas Carol, and
Wedding Singer. Cameron has also been in other community productions, such as Rocky Horrow Show,
Children of Eden, Jekeyll & Hyde, and Big River. “I am blessed to be a part of such an amazing cast! You
Can’t Stop the Beat!”

dance on The Corny Collins Show, without the white kids, in an
effort to give those kids a fair shake. Hairspray is a show about
and all the pain that went with that effort the year before President Kennedy was assassinated, the year preceding the Medgar Evers murder, a year prior to
Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech, the year before a Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama was bombed, killing four little girls. This play is
set in the moment before everything in this country went crazy.
Now, jump to 2012 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Theatre Cedar Rapids has decided to do a play about integration where it matters whether you’re Black or
White or Asian or Hispanic. We’ve decided to do a play which requires half a Black cast in a city where the Black population is 5.6%, at a theatre where
audiences and volunteers are traditionally and predominantly White. So when we auditioned, I was nervous about whether we would be able to pull this off.
With 175 auditioners, nearly 1/3 of them were Black or Mixed Race. That was huge for us, and frankly, huge for this city, I think. Because here we are doing a
bright and bubbly musical about integration in Baltimore in 1962 and our city, though integrated, isn’t really. I think it’s getting better.
But when it came time for everyone to gather for auditions, the Black kids sat with the Black kids, and the White kids sat with the White kids. And at
our first read-through, the White kids gravitated to the kids who looked like them, and the Black kids gravitated to the kids who looked like them. I love this
show. I love that it presents us with a challenging time in our history through humor and heart. That, to me, is the genius of John Waters’ story and the
show Hairspray. It never clobbers you with message. In fact, it cleverly disguises its message in silliness. But it’s there, and because we’re open to the
laughter and the joy, it gets in. And hopefully, we leave the theatre smiling and feeling good, and that’s the context of the message. So we’re perfectly happy
to take it with us and think about it. And maybe, eventually, we even do something about it.
It’s getting better, I think, but we’re not there yet. The cast and directing team have already started a dialogue that is open and heartfelt and useful.
I’m hoping that by the end of this run, this cast and crew gets to know each other a little better and starts to understand each other. And then they go out
into the universe and share what they’ve learned about themselves and each other. I’m hoping the same for audiences, too.
-LESLIE

Camps & Classes

at TCR
TCR’s popular summer education programs include classes for children in kindergarten through high school.
Our education programs are designed to be age-appropriate. Younger students learn to hone their imagination
and creativity through play activities, arts, and crafts. Older students will explore theories and methodologies of
performance, as well as the technical aspects of theatre. No two camps will be exactly the same, and students
are welcome to participate more than once. All camps will include a showcase during the last day!

ADDITIONAL SESSIONS BEGIN JULY 9, JULY 16, & JULY 30!

Kindergarten Theatre
What a better way to enjoy the summer than to head to camp for the first time! Kindergartners will be introduced to the
theatre in the best way possible – through playing and pretend. This camp will focus on engaging the imagination as the first
step to learning about theatre.

1st-2nd Grade Theatre

Theatre increases imagination, boosts confidence, and improves creative problem solving. Your kids will use acting,
movement, and improvisation to learn the ins and outs of performing, as well as learning the backstage aspects of theatre.

3rd-5th Grade Theatre

Master the essential techniques of theatre – onstage and behind the scenes. Through improvisation, acting, and scene work,
as well as an opportunity to learn about the technical aspects of theatre, theatre camp will give kids the confidence they need
to make a splash at their next audition or performance - confidence they will carry with them throughout the school year and
their lifetime.

3rd-5th Grade Musical Theatre

Are musicals your thing? If you can’t get enough of singing show tunes, then this camp is for you. You’ll hone your singing, Kin
dancing, and acting skills while working on pieces from famous musicals.

Welcome to our
78th Season at
Theatre Cedar Rapids

Welcome to Theatre Cedar Rapids’ 2011-12 Season – our biggest, most

ambitious season ever. Because we’re so excited about all of our new and
improved spaces, we’ve decided to schedule an 11-show season plus an
11-original-show, two-weekend Festival.

Of course some of you might be thinking, “Are you people crazy?” And the
answer probably varies depending on which of us you’re talking about. But it
seemed like the perfect time to continue the growth that we, and our community
neighbors and partners, are generating.

This season, TCR is flanked by progress – from the new Cedar Rapids
Convention Center on one end of 3rd Street to the re-opening of the
magnificently restored CSPS building on the other end. This is an exciting time
for all of us, and we hope that our energy and determination are a reflection of
all that is exciting and good about the progress this community is making.

We’re so glad you could join us for this show, and we hope to see you again
over the next several months -- auditioning, ushering, taking a class, building a
set, or seeing another show. It’s because of your support that we’re celebrating
such a big and diverse season. We are lucky to be in a community like Cedar
Rapids that just keeps growing and getting better.

Leslie Charipar, Artistic Director

Casey Prince, Executive Director

A new meaning for

“Green Room”

When Theatre Cedar Rapids needed a partner to design and renovate the electrical systems in
the Iowa Theater Building it chose Paulson Electric. Colorful LED lighting in the Linge Lounge,
as well as occupancy sensors and lighting control panels make the lighting highly efficient,
including automatic shut off when illumination isn’t needed.

Paulson Electric’s partnership with TCR reduces energy use and operating costs.
Now, just the performances are high energy.
