Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for the Wheels on Meals program. People are needed to help pack and bag meals for seniors. This is perfect for early risers with free time. The volunteer work would begin at 9 a.m. To volunteer or learn more about the program, call (734) 955-4120.

Free Picnic Lunch and Ice Cream Social


Mark your calendar for July 18. Everyone is welcome to enjoy a free outdoor picnic lunch at the Romulus Senior Center. Hot dogs will be served and seniors are invited to bring a dish to serve. Mayor Alan R. Lambert will provide ice cream for dessert. If you plan to attend, please call (734) 955-4120.

Detroit Tigers Game


A trip to a Detroit Tigers game is available to members of the Romulus Senior Center. The Tigers will play the Los Angeles Angels at 1:05 p.m. Thursday, July 19. Tickets are $22, which includes round-trip transportation from the Senior Center to Comerica Park. To reserve tickets, see Director Rose Swidan at the Senior Center or call (734) 955-4120.

Hollywood Casino
Travel Treasure and Tours invites Romulus seniors to travel by motor coach on Wednesday, July 11, to the new Hollywood Casino in Toledo. Admission is $32, which includes a $5 incentive to players. Seating is limited.

Senior Olympics
Best wishes to all seniors who will represent the Romulus Senior Center in the 27th annual Downriver Senior Olympics July 30-August 3. Senior Olympians will depart the Senior Center at 6:30 a.m. for Huron Township, where they will participate in a free breakfast, opening ceremonies, a leisurely walk and events. The registration deadline was June 29. For more information, call (734) 955-4120.

Motor City Casino


Romulus seniors are invited to visit the Motor City Casino on Tuesday, July 17. A bus leaves at 9 a.m. from the Romulus Senior Center. The cost is $10 per person. The casino provides $20 in credit upon arrival. For more information, call (734) 955-4120.

Senior Bingo Cruise


Romulus seniors are invited to a Senior Bingo Cruise on August 20. At 10 a.m., a bus will transport seniors from the Romulus Senior Center to the Portofino restaurant in Wyandotte. Seniors will board the Portofino Friendship boat at 10:40 a.m. After a wonderful lunch at 11:30, the boat will cruise the Detroit River while seniors play bingo and enjoy the sights. The boat will return to the dock at 3 p.m. Seats are limited at $30 each. Register at the Senior Center.

BINGO!
Bingo is played at Noon Mondays and Wednesdays at the Romulus Senior Center. Everyone is invited. Two sponsored bingos are scheduled in July. Sponsors provide pizza and pop for players. Sponsored Bingos July 11 - Tender Care July 18 - United Health Care There is no Bingo on July 4. The center will be closed.

Election News
A Primary Election will be held on August 7. The last day to register to vote in the election is Monday, July 9. City Clerk Ellen Craig-Bragg said new residents must fill out a new voters registration application, which is available at the City Clerks Office at City Hall, 11111 Wayne Road. To request an absentee ballot or to receive more information about registering to vote, please contact the Clerks Office at (734) 942-7540.

Game Days and Exercise Class


Members of the Romulus Senior Center can play games and exercise throughout the week: Bingo is played at noon Mondays and Wednesdays. Bunco is played at noon Tuesdays. Pinochle and other games are played during Wednesday Fun Days. Game Day is scheduled for noon Thursdays. A new stress-free chair exercise class has been added to the Friday schedule, starting at 9:30 a.m. To register, call the Senior Center at (734) 955-4120.

Lets Go Fishing!
Seniors are invited to spend a wonderful day fishing at the Dexter Trout Farm. Seniors will leave the Senior Center at 9 a.m. July 26. The cost is $13 per person, which includes transportation, admission to the farm and one fish. The farm sells farm-raised channel catfish for $5.93 a pound and trout for $6.69 a pound. Please register for the trip at the Senior Center.

Health Information
Meijer Pharmacy will educate seniors about shingles at 11:30 a.m. July 24 at the Senior Center. Shots will be available for a fee.

Reminder: Be careful in the summer heat


The City of Romulus will open the Romulus Senior Center as a cooling center when a heat advisory is declared. A heat advisory will be issued when the heat index is expected to be at least 100 degrees for three hours or more. The National Weather Service reports that about 115 people in the U.S. die each year from extreme heat. Metro Detroit experiences about a dozen 90-plusdegree days per year. Romulus Fire Chief David Allison urges everyone especially people over age 40 to take extra precautions.

Holiday and Furlough Day


The Senior Center will be closed Wednesday, July 4, for Independence Day and Friday, July 20, which is an unpaid city furlough day.

Party Rooms for Rent


The Romulus Senior Center is a great place to celebrate birthdays, baby showers, family reunions and wedding receptions. The beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the Senior Center are available for rent at very affordable rates. There are rooms that can hold up to 120 people and they are available any day of the week. Bring your own caterer or make arrangements to use the Senior Center kitchen. Join members of the Romulus VFW for a Flag Day ceremony

The Community Garden is going strong. Thanks to everyone who tends to the garden, which is located outside the Senior Center.

Caregiver Support Group


A group for family caregivers meets from 10 a.m. to noon the fourth Wednesday of the month in the board room of the Romulus Senior Center. The Caregiver Support Group, provided by the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency, is for people who care for those with Alzheimers disease and dementia. Helpful information and assistance is provided. There is no charge. Those planning to attend for the first time are asked to call and verify the date and time. Red Hatters
The sassy Red Hatters group will meet at noon Friday, July 6. Everyone is invited to join them for lots of fun.
