With a batch of diversely talented musicians, the music group at L celebrated a year of rocking performances, wonderfully received by the batch. With a typical show oscillating between high energy retro jams to some good old classic rock, it was a fun filled year for the members on stage and in the jam room, and the energy was reciprocated by the batch. The session kicked off with classes offered for Guitar and Drums for both the batches on campus. With registration from over 50 students for the guitar classes, it was a move to encourage interaction of the batch with the club, as well as a chance to explore talents not explored. 3hree.4our acted as enabler with the guitarists of the senior batch taking on the responsibility to teach, along with getting a bulk deal to buy new guitars. The stock shows of 3hree.4our include the performance at insti parties and we had some wonderful display of talent from both PGP26 and PGP27 members at these gatherings. Over the course of three insti parties in the academic year 2011-2012, the band swayed the audience with popular bollywood numbers apart from some impromptu jams on stage. Turning to metal for the Battle of Bands at Varchasva, the band put in a tight musical performance, with a good outing for the instrumentalists. The highlight of this particular year however was the performance at Manfest 12, with a performance that was sublime as it was fun. With the set list including numbers from The Doors to RHCP exhausted, the follow up included impromptu jams by the PGP26, along with Tomtsa in the mix, along with an extended percussion jam at the end. The PGP27 3hree.4our was inducted in Dec 11, and their first performance was the Spring Fusion Festival 12 at Samanjasya. Performing with Savi on the drums, the performance included some retro themed numbers, rock adaptations of others and a few favourites from Alternative Rock to Punk. This was followed up by a performance at the Farewell 12 for the seniors. Also, our member Srinath Nagarajan participated at the Colours of Youth, a televised talent hunt show sponsored by Maruti Suzuki and won the regional finals and would participate in the National Finals on the 6th of March. With an eye towards the upcoming academic year, we plan to venture into new territory, with prospects of an acoustic concert, expanding the range of songs and trying out some selfcompositions next up. Fun rules, after all - in the jam room, on stage and off it!

Quizzing Commoners
Quizzing commoners has been responsible for creating awareness and interest in all aspects of quizzing. It has conducted a plethora of activities and organised events round the year, both by itself and in conjunction with other committees and clubs, in order to achieve its goals. This year was a landmark one for Qcom. For the first time ever, IIM Lucknow played host to Nihilanth, the pan IIT-IIM quizzing festival and undoubtedly the biggest event on the Indian campus quizzing scene. With four IIMs and 6 IITs participating, the campus was the setting for one of the biggest battle of wits that one can witness. Coinciding with Manfest, Nihilanth 2012 was held from 20-22nd January. All in all there were 6 quizzes with the overall winners walking away with the pride of being called Nihilanth winners, apart from the prize money given to the teams coming in the top 3 positions in every quiz. The 6 quizzes were: 1) The Lone Wolf quiz- An individual quiz to determine the best individual quizzer of the lot. Period. 2) India quiz- The participants took a magical journey in pursuit of the never ending trivia that this great nation of ours offers. Theres no place like home, is it?? 3) Biz Quiz- As someone aptly put it, knowing the business of businesses was the ultimate business quizzers business. 4) MELA Quiz- Music. Entertainment. Literature. Arts. Difficult to imagine life without them, isnt it?? Well, we put the quizzers to test to find out how much they know about these bare necessities of their lives. 5) Sports Quiz- There is not a soul on earth who hasnt played one sport or another. The quizzers tend to think that they know everything about sports...well, lets just say the quizmaster bowled a few of them out, nutmegged a few others..the ones who didnt throw in the towel, won. 6) The General Quiz The General Quiz was a challenge which tested the best of brains on the breadth and depth of their knowledgethe questions ranged from Art to Biology, from Graphic Novels to Indian History and from Technology to Mythology. The quiz was the perfect arena for those well-read Gladiators who liked to think of themselves as domain-independent Generalists. The quizmasters were from among the Whos Who of Indian quizzing and included stalwarts like Arul Mani, G. Shrikanth, among others. IIM Ahmedabad were crowned the overall champions with the hosts IIM Lucknow pushing them all the way and coming in second by the narrowest of margins. The event was a resounding success with all the participating institutes praising the standard of the quizzes, the quizmasters, the wonderful hospitality and last, but not the least, the sense of fair play and sportsman spirit exhibited by the hosts. In addition to the mega event that was Nihilanth 2012, Quizzing Commoners was also responsible for conducting the quizzes on a regular basis including the now- famous Saturday Night Live Quizzes held once every fortnight. The three day marathon event included more than 35 events, with a footfall of over 3000 per day. The festival kick started with a mesmerizing classical nite by Madhumita Ray followed by an unforgettable performance by Grammy award winner Pt Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. The festival also showcased lesser known Indian art forms like Gotipua ( a form of Odissi dance by young boys who dress up as female to praise Lord Jagannath and Lord Krishna), and Hand Shadowgraphy by Dr Amar Sen and Sabyasachi Sen. The cultural arena was replete with interesting events like Fashion show, choreography, western group dance, dramatics and War of Bands, to name a few. The literary arena was had a new addition called the Literary Gladiators, in addition to a host of other events like quizzes, JAM and debates. The event rounded off by hosting Bollywood singer Suraj Jagan who enthralled the humungous crowd of over 3000 present on the day with his foot tapping, energetic numbers. With gratitude and appreciation, we thank all our sponsors, partners, organizers, participants and volunteers for making Varchasva 2011 the biggest festival in the region , and an event that will be indelible from the memories of all those who were a part of it. 1) INAUGURATION AND CLASSICAL NIGHT The festival was inaugurated by the Lucknow Icon, Padmashri Mr. Muzaffar Ali and CGM of SBI, Mr. A K Singh. The Classical Nite was opened by a mesmerizing Hindustani Vocal performance by Mrs.Madhumita Ray. Music literally had no bounds when later Grammy award winner Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt enthralled the captivating audience of more than 1500 people assembled for the inauguration. The stage play event attracted one of the largest crowds on the first evening of the festival. It was a tough task to choose the final eight teams to perform from over 15 teams from various colleges all over India. The BBDNITM team gave the audience a lot to ponder over with their play based on the pitfalls of the caste system. The home team also put up a great show. The resounding sound of claps of a 1000 strong audience every time the actors pulled off some antic on the stage was truly a sight to behold.
42
2) CHOREO NIGHT Rife with fire, flair and flamboyance of 290 participants from 26 teams the choreo night at Varchasva 2011 was a stunning concourse of glamour and expression. The animated pulse of music and the groovy moves of the dancers swept the 2000+ crowd off their feet; quite literally. The stage is set for a next edition with wackier ways of showing how dance can be both poetic and wild.
3) GOTIPUA From the heart of Orissa, a cultural performance that is as eastern as it gets Gotipua was a delightful addition to Varchasva 2011. The 16th century art form transcends dance; with little boys dressed as female dancers performing acrobatic figures inspired by the life of Radha & Krishna. 2500 people, young and old alike were mesmerized by the performance that underscored the worth of a truly traditional performance at a cultural festival for the youth. 4) JASHN- THE FASHION PARADE It was like a thousand angels had descended upon the campus at the same time. Breathtaking beauties walked the ramp in clothes designed by their own peers. The event had three rounds: traditional attire, western, and a theme base round. The latter was particularly enjoyed by everyone, with teams showcasing themes as diverse as Indian dance forms, marriages, and pirates, to name a few. The NIFT Raibarelly team lived up to the hype generated by the tag they were carrying, and left the junta swooning with every step taken by their models on the ramp. The mood of the event was aptly captured in the song used by them: Chai, Chillum, Chapati!. The event was enjoyed by a staggering crowd of more than 1500, and had registrations from over 20 colleges of which 6 were chosen to perform in the final event.
5) PRO NITE The last event of Varchasva11 was bearing huge expectations and the audience started pouring in even before the event started. The stage was equipped with 20,000 Watts boom boxes, which started off with a bang when Star Bollywood singer Suraj Jagan sang his hit number Jaa Chudail from Delhi Belly. 3000 students were dancing to his numbers until they shifted their gears and started roaring Once More, Once More when the artist started singing his iconic Give me some sunshine from 3 Idiots. The convocation ground was packed to its brim and students were just trying to manage some space. As the audience swooned and danced to the energetic singers foot tapping numbers, the event came closer to its highly befitting end, leaving everyone with memories to cherish.
43
6) DARE OR DIE This one was all about beauty and brawn.
