rett Sutherland, Solar Power Australias managing director, speaks highly of his team, who are not only passionate about renewable energy, but are enthusiastic professionals with years of training and qualifications behind them. Solar Power Australia created Australias first online solar store in 2001 which is operated under the trading name Solar Online Australia. The online store gives customers and researchers easy access to renewable energy products, specifications and pricing, and is used by educational institutions throughout Australia as a product reference site. One of the countrys largest suppliers and integrators of sustainable energy products, Solar Power Australia offers a diverse range of services and an indepth understanding of renewable energy solutions. Mr Sutherland said, Were not just a household solar company like a lot of other companies we actually come from an industrial background and are able to service industrial clients. Customers can choose from a range of packaged deals or have a system tailored specifically to suit their budget and needs. In making the switch to renewable energy, people will significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Solar Power Australia designs, supplies and installs highly efficient and cost-effective crystalline, amorphous thin film solar modules and wind turbines which provide reliable and environmentally clean electric power on-grid and off-grid for residential, commercial, industrial and utility-scale applications throughout Australia. They have worked on thousands of large and small-scale projects, including an 18kW system on Bond Universitys School of Sustainable Design building which was the first 6 star building in Queensland, possibly in Australia. Mr Sutherland points out that his company has also run large sound
systems for events which could have been powered with a diesel generator. Instead we ran it off a battery pack and solar power, which is a much cleaner method and its silent, he said. Solar Power Australia has the technical capabilities to work with clients like the CSIRO. We built a trailer to run computer and monitoring equipment for a SETI project which is used in the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence. That particular unit was going out to the desert in WA to monitor the airways in space to determine if theres any intelligent life forms out there, so that was an interesting project. When Mr Sutherland speaks about solar power and its endless possibilities you can tell how fascinating he finds it all.
Solar Power Australia provides quality solutions for renewable energy projects using high-quality components from a variety of manufacturers. A lot of the steel fabrication is done in Australia and other products that we source come from Australia, the US, China or Korea, Mr Sutherland said. "We design things like trailers, mining skids, cantilever lighting posts and mounting systems for modules... The larger items are manufactured locally and some of the other products we get manufactured overseas. The quality of all product components must be first grade. We always choose products that wont give us or our customers trouble; we always choose the best quality products to use, Mr Sutherland said. Solar Power Australia is proud to have partnerships with companies such as LG and K-Solar who have invested millions to create solar panels of unparalleled quality and performance. Since Solar Power Australia has solid relationships with its suppliers, the company is able to offer its customers competitive pricing and access to custom-made and cutting-edge solutions.
customers, and believe this product is a revolutionary advancement in technology for the Australian market. UNI-SOLAR solar PV laminates are lightweight, flexible and directly adhere to approved roofing surfaces, thus avoiding numerous roof penetrations. At less than 500g per square foot, the UNI-SOLAR PowerBond solar laminate is less than one-fifth of the weight of crystalline solar panels. This makes them particularly valuable on low-load roof structures which cannot tolerate the weight or roof integrity risk posed by conventional solar systems. The polymer composition means they can be used on curved surfaces and do not have the glare effect that glass panels present. For buildings with a low roof angle UNISOLAR offers its PowerTilt product, allowing the solar PV array to be tilted by 15 degrees, providing a higher output and higher returns. UNI-SOLAR products are particularly well suited for integration with membrane or metal roofing systems. Mr Sutherland said the superior performance of UNI-SOLAR laminates both in high temperatures and shade made them very attractive in the Australian market. In comparison to crystalline modules, the amorphous silicon technology used in UNI-SOLAR laminates ensures that system performance is less affected by high temperatures and partial shading, he said.
BRIGHT OUTLOOK
The future vision is to continue doing what we do best which is custom applications, but also larger-scale commercial solar systems; Australia is moving into megawatt projects and we obviously want to be a part of that, Mr Sutherland said. The solar power market changes rapidly and a key strength of Solar Power Australia is its ability to adapt and evolve quickly. There isnt a big chain of command slowing the decision-making process down so the company can respond quickly to innovations and government incentive schemes. With a passion for making a difference to the environment and your power bill, Solar Power Australia really does give you power that shines.
