Nanomaterials Fabrication

Higher priority Recommendations

Develop and coordinate nano-education activities K-12, Community Colleges, MS and PhD universities Technology, Safety, Toxicology, Environment worker training. Establish a Nano-industry/Academia board advise DHHS, EPA, OSHA on nano-facilities Nano-E,H&S guidelines establish links to NNI, SOT (Nano) and AACT (Nano). Develop a nano-detection, remediation research center new techniques for nano-material detection and quantification Technology for passivation and characterization, etc. identify current technologies that could apply to nanomaterials. Establish a NIST-like US National Reference lab for nanotechnology
2

Particle and Instrumentation standardization

Medium Priority
Develop and promote green nano-fabrication practices Continue development of in vivo and in vitro toxicity tests. Create an avenue to educate and inform the public
what is nano? what are the benefits, risks?

Improve and standardize labeling, packaging and handling of nanomaterials

Lower Priority
Promote an arbitrated forum posting companies post best-practices and common sense approaches for safety, environment NNI or University manage this forum? Require personal exposure monitoring with records retention requirements. Create AIA guidelines for nanofabrication facilities Establish a NC-Nano-Industry Association, capitalize on existing resources Collect and disseminate best technologies and practices for instrumentation and monitoring. Establish best practices for companies (large and small) to manage legal risk.

4

Contractual liabilities Insurance protection Immunity / Tort reform based upon compliance with federal guidelines

Establish an industry-wide standard of care that evolves with discovery

Criteria:
Does the recommendation have the potential to: reduce potential threats to environment and public health? be readily implementable and feasible? High, Medium or Low

Evaluate High/Medium Priority Recommendations:

Develop and coordinate nano-education activities Establish a Nano-industry/Academia board Develop a nano-detection, remediation research center Establish a NIST-like Authoritative US National Reference lab for nanotechnology materials Develop and promote green nano-fabrication practices Improve and standardize labeling, packaging and handling of nanomaterials
