Appendix I
Instructional Objectives for Eng 401 Interview
Students should be able to: Provide clear, focused, cohesive, intelligent and accurate responses to questions asked. Provide support to / fully develop their answers in light of their presentation topic. Employ a tone that shows personal confidence and respect towards their interlocutors / audience. Be fluent enough to enable listeners to listen to clearly and comfortably. Deploy a level of language / vocabulary sufficient to communicate their message accurately, concisely and intelligently. Be attuned their interlocutors / audiences particular needs and interests. Demonstrate strategies to efficiently deal with communication breakdown (e.g. when mishearing a question / providing further clarification when needed). Show an understanding of effective interview strategies / techniques (e.g. positive demeanor, good posture and eye contact, audience command, controlling the length / detail of answers, selling a position without appearing aggressive, etc).

Expression of Ideas
The interviewees answers are fully developed, clear and intelligent.
Fluency
The interviewee is fluent (tone / rhythm) throughout and pleasant to listen to.
Language
The interviewee clearly demonstrates a high level of grammatical structures and vocabulary appropriate for the situation.
Interview Strategies
The interviewee clearly / consistently uses a complete range of effective interview strategies (e.g. providing / asking for clarification, a positive attitude, controlled body language). In essence they seem to be in complete control of interview and to be enjoying the experience. The interviewee, on the whole, successfully uses a range of interview strategies. This allows them to have some control over their performance and give the appearance of confidence. An attempt is made to manage the interview process positively. There is clear evidence of a conscious attempt (sometimes unsuccessfully) to use some interview techniques.

Answers are on the whole developed and show consistent clarity and intelligence. Questions are answered, but they could be more developed / clearer.
The interviewee is generally fluent, causing only minor strain / confusion for their audience (e.g. occasionally hesitant, slurring words / slightly monotone, etc.). Sufficiently fluent to follow, however hesitations, repetitions, voice tone / speed / volume, etc. may cause consistent strain for the listener.

The interviewee demonstrates a range of grammatical structures and vocabulary. High level structures and vocabulary are rarely attempted. The interviewee demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures and vocabulary with frequent mistakes. Very limited language produced during the interview which is insufficient for situation.
Consistent problems with answers (e.g. they lack clarity, seem to be confused, fail to answer the question at times, etc.) Clearly the interviewee has serious problems expressing their ideas the audience has very little idea what they are trying to say. Answers almost non-existent or completely unintelligible.
