Debaters Association of Victoria

Teacher Inservice 2011

A professional development program for teachers and debating coordinators

Friday February 25th

Jasper Hotel, Elizabeth St, Melbourne Debating promotes confidence in oral presentation and teaches structured argument and analysis skills essential far beyond debating itself. Through debating, students can learn how to work in a team and to argue with confidence and precision. Debating also encourages awareness about the world at large as students grapple with challenging issues. The Debaters Association of Victorias Teacher Inservice is an excellent opportunity to learn about debating and to develop the skills to pass this knowledge on to students in classrooms, or coach them to success in competitions. The Inservice will provide an array of useful hints, practical tips, activities, real life applications, and examples. Who should attend? English teachers, librarians, anyone interested in debating. The Program The training will include: a discussion of the benefits of debating, adjudicators advice on how to prepare and present a case, tips on how to adjudicate debates and coach a debating team, seminars on dealing with definitional debates, secret topics and using rebuttal to win debates, and workshops on effective public speaking You will also receive a comprehensive set of materials to use throughout the year. What Previous Participants Say The DAV has run similar Inservices since 2003. Teachers from Government, Catholic, and independent schools across Victoria have attended. Some teachers had not seen a debate; others had been involved in debating for decades. Here are some typical comments from those teachers: One of the best PD days that I have ever attended. It was very useful and interesting with practical advice on how to conduct debates in school. Very helpful. It will really make a difference in how I help my students prepare for their debates. An open and practical session that gave good advice and illuminated some aspects of the mysteries of adjudication.

Session Information
Introduction to DebatingCharisma Dungan A beginners' guide to the aims, benefits and rules of debating. This session will cover the format of 3-on-3 debating, including the rules of debate, speaker roles and assessment criteria. It will also provide resources and activities for teachers to use to assist students to develop the basic skills involved in preparing and presenting an argument. Charisma has been the DAV's Executive Officer since 2006. She has been involved in training students, teachers, and adult debaters for the last 6 years. She has co-created and managed pilot initiatives such as the Junior Public Speaking, Primary School and Public Speaking programs. Coaching and StrategyAmit Golder This session will enable you to take the role of debating coach for your students. It will cover some basic training and development skills, as well as some specialised tips for how to coach students at different year levels, experience levels and for prepared, advised and secret topics. Amit Golder has been Vice President (Schools) of the Debaters Association of Victoria since 2010. He was selected as the captain of the 2009 Australian National Adults Debating team and was a member of the winning team representing Monash University at the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 2010. Amit is the current coach of the Victorian Schools Debating Team and has also been involved in training secondary school and university students in Melbourne and Hong Kong.

Session Information (continued)

Introduction to AdjudicationMonique Hardinge and Amit Golder The adjudication session will teach how to judge debates in a fair and consistent fashion and will focus on the three key criteria which adjudicators use in deciding debates: Manner, Matter and Method. This session forms the basis of the understanding of how debating works. It will aid staff in understanding what is required of students and ensuring they are well prepared, and to ensure that they can make the most of the feedback they are given by adjudicators. We will also cover scoring and definitions, and any queries or questions raised by participants in the session. It is also a useful refresher for those staff who have had roles in debating for some time. As a DAV debater in her school years, Monique has been adjudicating with the DAV since finishing high school and is now beginning her second term as the Vice President (Adjudication and Training) at the DAV. She has been the President of the Melbourne University Debating Society, and has also been the coordinator for their Schools Training Programs. Monique has adjudicated at the World Universities Debating Championships and adjudicated the Grand Final of the most recent Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships, held in 2010. She is studying a postgraduate Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne. Public SpeakingJonathan Benney and Charisma Dungan Speaking in public is an invaluable skill for students -- but effective public speaking requires the synergy of many different factors: style, form, and content. This session aims to demystify the skills of public speaking. It will cover the use of the voice and the body; the development of effective content; ways of organizing speeches to hold the audience's attention; and preparing for impromptu speeches. The session will also prepare teachers to teach and assess public speaking. Jonathan has been involved in debating as a debater, adjudicator and trainer since the 1990s. He has represented Melbourne University as a debater and adjudicator at the Australian, Australasian and World University Debating Championships, and was on the team that represented Australia at the world Chinese-language debating championships in 2007. He was the Vice-President (Adjudication and Training) of the DAV from 2007 to 2009. He has a PhD in Chinese Studies from the University of Melbourne and will be working as a postdoctoral research fellow at the National University of Singapore in 2011. Advanced BasicsChristopher Hibbard This session aims to extend on previous debating knowledge. It will look at advanced research techniques and present ideas for enhancing rebuttal. As well as looking at how to improve presentation, we will also examine the principles involved in building a case hard/soft lines, use of models, and winning definitional debates. Chris is the President of the DAV. He has been adjudicating and training since 2005 and served as the Vice-President (Schools) of the DAV from 2007-2009 and as Secretary in 2010. He also currently serves as the Executive Officer of the Australian Debating Federation. Outside the DAV, he studies law, politics and English literature and has served as editor of the Melbourne Journal of International Law.
