Fundamental education (enseignement fondamental) consists of preschool and primary

school. It is obligatory from the age of 4 onwards and is composed of 4 cycles instead of
school years:

(A cycle in education refers to a stage that groups several school years together, allowing children to
progress at their own pace while focusing on specific learning goals for that stage.)

 1st cycle: children aged 3–5 (introduces children to school, focusing on socialization, language
development, and foundational skills.)
 2nd cycle: ages 6–7 (builds on literacy, numeracy, and basic problem-solving.
 3rd cycle: ages 8–9(Builds on skills from Cycle 2, introducing more complex concepts in subjects
like math, sciences, and languages.)
 4th cycle: ages 10–11(Prepares students for secondary education by strengthening academic
knowledge and independent learning skills.)

In Luxembourg, secondary education typically begins at age 12 and lasts until age 18 or 19,
depending on the chosen path and the student's progress. The system is divided into two main
streams, each with its own duration and focus:

1. Classical Secondary Education (ESC):

 Ages: 12 to 19.
 Duration: 7 years.
 Focus: Academic and theoretical learning, preparing students for university studies.

2. General Secondary Education (ESG):

 Ages: 12 to 18 or 19.
 Duration: 6 to 7 years.
 Focus: Practical and vocational training alongside general education.

Educational Stages:

 Lower Secondary (First Years): Ages 12–15.

o Students receive a broad education in languages, math, sciences, and introductory
subjects based on their chosen stream.
 Upper Secondary (Final Years): Ages 16–18/19.
o Students specialize in academic (ESC) or vocational (ESG) fields to prepare for
university, further studies, or entering the workforce.
In Luxembourg, higher education typically follows the Bologna Process structure, which
consists of three cycles. The duration of higher education depends on the level of study:

1. Bachelor's Degree (First Cycle)

 Duration: Typically 3 years (6 semesters).

 Focus: Provides a broad foundation in the chosen field of study. Upon completion,
students earn a bachelor's degree.

2. Master's Degree (Second Cycle)

 Duration: Typically 1 to 2 years (2 to 4 semesters).

 Focus: Offers specialized study beyond the bachelor’s degree. Students can pursue
research-based or professionally-oriented master’s programs.
 Example: A Master’s program might take 1 year if it is intensive or 2 years if it includes
more in-depth coursework or a thesis.

3. Doctoral Degree (Third Cycle)

 Duration: Typically 3 to 4 years, but it can vary depending on the field and research
project.
 Focus: Involves conducting original research and writing a doctoral thesis. After
successful defense of the thesis, students are awarded a PhD.

Summary of Higher Education Duration in Luxembourg:

 Bachelor’s Degree: 3 years

 Master’s Degree: 1–2 years
 Doctoral (PhD): 3–4 years
Based on my research, the highest-paid teaching jobs in the country are in Luxembourg.
Experienced lower secondary teachers can earn over $109,000 annually, if we convert that
to Philippine pesos you have 6,425,659 a year.

Luxembourg: Teachers in Luxembourg receive some of the highest salaries globally. Experienced lower
secondary teachers can earn over $109,000 annually.
