DEFECTS OF VISION AND
CORRECTIVE MEASURES
RAY DIAGRAMS -NIKILESH.P

There are several common defects of vision, and corrective

measures often involve the use of lenses. Here are three
common vision defects and the corresponding corrective
measures with the power of lenses:
Myopia (Nearsightedness):
- Defect: In myopia, distant objects appear blurry, while close
objects are seen clearly. This occurs when the eyeball is too long
or the cornea is too curved.

- Corrective Measure:Concave lenses are used to correct myopia.

These lenses diverge incoming light before it reaches the eye's lens,
allowing the image to focus correctly on the retina.

- Power of Lens: The power of the concave lens is represented by

a negative value (e.g., -2.00 D), indicating its diverging nature.
Hyperopia (Farsightedness):
- Defect:Hyperopia results in clear vision for distant objects but
difficulty focusing on close objects. This occurs when the eyeball is
too short or the cornea has insufficient curvature.

- Corrective Measure:Convex lenses are used to correct hyperopia.

These lenses converge incoming light before it reaches the eye's
lens, allowing for proper focusing on the retina.

- Power of Lens:The power of the convex lens is represented by a

positive value (e.g., +3.00 D), indicating its converging nature.
Astigmatism:
- Defect: Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or lens has an
irregular shape, causing blurred vision at various distances. Both
near and far objects may appear distorted.

- Corrective Measure: Cylindrical lenses are used to correct

astigmatism. These lenses have different curvatures in different
meridians, compensating for the irregularities in the cornea or
lens.

- Power of Lens: The power of the cylindrical lens includes

information about the axis of rotation and the degree of
astigmatism (e.g., -1.25 D at 180 degrees).
It's essential to note that the power of the lens is measured in
diopters (D). Positive values indicate converging lenses (convex),
negative values indicate diverging lenses (concave), and cylindrical

lenses have both positive and negative powers in different

meridians.
