1. [Maximum Mark: 8]
2 x+ 4
The function f is defined by f ( x )= , where x ∈ R , x ≠ 3.
3−x
Write down the equation of
(a) (i) the vertical asymptote of the graph of f . [1]
(ii) the horizontal asymptote of the graph of f . [1]
Find the coordinates where the graph of f crosses
(b) (i) the x-axis. [1]
(ii) the y-axis. [1]
(c) Sketch the graph of f on the axes below. [1]
(d) Find the equation of the line perpendicular to the line segment joining
the x-intercept and y-intercept. [3]

2. [Maximum mark: 5]
mx−n p
The function f is of the form f ( x )= , for x ≠ , where m , n , p ∈ Z .
3 x− p 3
Given that the graph of y=f ( x ) has asymptotes x=1 and y=3 , and

passes through the point A −1, ( 2

3. [Maximum mark: 6]
Ben is a dentist. He believes there is a relationship between the average number
of cavities developed in each of his patients’ mouths per year ( y ) and the number
of minutes they brush their teeth each morning and evening (x ). Ben believes the
2
function y= represents this relationship.
x
Alita and Chamse are Ben’s patients.
(a) Determine how many cavities Alita is likely to develop in one year if she
brushes her teeth for two minutes each morning and evening. [3]
(b) Chamse develops four cavities in a year. Find the number of minutes she
likely spent brushing her teeth each morning and evening. [3]

4. [Maximum mark: 4]
Let f and g be the functions such that g ( x )=−f ( 4 x ) +3 , for x ∈ R .
The graph of g is obtained from the graph of f using the following transformations.
a horizontal stretch by a factor of k , followed by
a reflection in the x−axis , followed by
a vertical translation of a units up.
(a) Write down the value of:
(i) k;
(ii) a. [2]
Let h ( x )=2 g (−x ) , for x ∈ R .
The point P ( 2 ,1 ) on the graph of g is mapped to point Q on the graph of h .
(b) Find the coordinates of Q . [2]

5. [Maximum mark: 7]
The function f is defined by f ( x )=a x2 −bx+ 3 , where a , b ∈ Z .
(a) Given that f has a minimum point at ( 1 ,−1 ) , find the values of
a and b . [3]
The graph of the function g is obtained from the graph of f by performing the
following transformations in order:
a horizontal translation of 3 units to the left,
a reflection in the y−axis,
a horizontal stretch by a factor of 2.
(b) Find an expression for g ( x ). [4]
