Course Title: Fundamentals of Training and Development


Course Code: HR303
Credit Units: 03

Course Objectives: The objective of the course is


1. To learn the basic concepts of training and development
2. To use new concepts of training and development useful in designing a comprehensive training session
3. To familiarize students with the levels, tools and techniques involved in evaluation of training effectiveness
4. To develop an understanding on various training/non training solutions to improve employee performance in relation to industry specific issues
5. To help students acquire and enhance their knowledge of how to plan, develop, carry out, and evaluate training and executive development programs in
business organizations.
6. To help students acquire and enhance their knowledge of how to plan, develop, carry out, and evaluate training and executive development programs in
business organizations and to learn the basic concepts of training and development and to use new concepts of training and development to design
training session.

Pre-requisites: Completion of following course is required before taking the class: Human Resource Management and OB. The Student should be aware of the
latest Trends in the training and development in industries
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course the student will be able to
 Achieve proficiency in different types of Training and development methods,
 Diagnose the training need analysis in organizations and administer the process of training in real practice
 Insights on how to design, organize, implement, and evaluate training in an organizational setting.

 Analyze Jobs and tasks to determine training and development objectives

 Assess training as a viable career option

Investment, Cost – Benefit Analysis, Models of Training Evaluation-Kirkpatrick four-level approach, Kaufman’s five
levels of evaluation of training impact, CIRO approach, Philip’s 5-level ROI framework.
Module IV: Training Needs for Modern Organizations 20%
Concept and Need for Learning Organizations, Learning curves, Training for Trainers, Leadership Training and Group
Dynamics, Organisational training-creativity training, Team training, Diversity training: Approaches to diversity
training, Orientation Training, Organisational culture and training, Knowledge management.
Module V: Executive Development 20%
Executive Development- Significance & nature, identifying development needs and setting objectives, Techniques of
development and advantages, Career Management and Development, (Career Stages), Succession Planning, Employee
counseling Differentiation between executive training, Technology in Training: CBT, Multimedia Training, Distance
Learning, Internal vs external training, Instructor led vs online training
Pedagogy for Course Delivery:
Classes focus on a combination of lectures and participatory dynamics. The structure of each unit includes a daily compulsory reading, followed by oral
presentations, class debates, group works and other practical activities. These activities will be complemented by lectures. Field based learning encourages
students to complement their conceptual knowledge with off-campus learning experiences that deepen their understanding of business issues.
Research based assignment to hone the research skills of students and maximize participant-centered learning experiences.
