B.Comprehension

Online all the Time?

Text A

In a new report, experts say there is no need to worry if your teenage sons or daughters are
spending hours connecting with friends on social media. In fact, they argue it is probably a
good thing.
Parents often worry about how young people are using their time. They think that because
teenagers are on their phones all the time, it must be bad for them, but research tells a very
different story. The report says that teenagers with lots of friends in real life usually make
their relationships stronger by going online. Having a phone is not bad for kids – it just
keeps them in touch with their friends.
Text B
Grown-ups often tell us not to use our phones, and I agree. I get angry that some of my
classmates spend all their free time on their phone, and never have time to talk to their parents
in the evening.
Luisa

Taking time to talk to friends online is important, but I think it‘s more important to go to
bed early. I always switch my phone off at seven o‘clock. Then I can spend time with my
family or read a book.
Anna I know that I‘m always using my phone, but I don‘t see why it‘s bad. It‘s my time and I
can do what I want with it. If I‘m talking to a friend, I‘m not wasting my time. I‘m just being
friendly and having fun!

Text C
To the Editor,
I am writing to complain about your recent article, which argued that cell phones should not be
allowed in schools. It is true to say that there are problems with having phones in
class. Nobody wants to hear a ringtone during a lesson, and some students often waste time
looking at their phone instead of studying. However, there is another side of the argument.
Students can use their phones to research information online or do projects, for example.
In the future, please present both sides of the argument in your reporting.
Yours,
Julia Haig

B.Comprehension

Are Our Earliest Memories Actually Real?

When I was very young – about three years old – my parents bought me my first bike. I spent
days trying to learn to ride it. Then, after hours and hours of practice, I stopped falling off and I
was cycling, faster and faster, with my dog chasing after me. It‘s my earliest memory and I
remember it really clearly, but actually, it isn‘t completely true.
Recently, my mom told me that she and dad didn‘t buy me a bike until I was seven, that I
learned to ride it really quickly – in minutes, not days – and that back then, we didn‘t have a
dog. I was shocked, but I now know that there was no need to be surprised because a lot of
our earliest memories aren‘t true.
Not long ago, researchers carried out one of the largest surveys of people‘s first memories
and discovered that the earliest memories of nearly 40% of people are false. In the survey, the
researchers asked volunteers to give details of their first memory and to say how old they
were at the time. The memory couldn‘t be based on an old photograph or a family story. It
had to be from direct experience. When they looked at the volunteers‘ descriptions and
stories, they discovered that many of them were memories of events that happened when
people were only two or three years old. These memories could not be true because, in the
opinion of many experts, our minds are not able to remember and record things that happen
to us until we are at least three and a half years old.
When researchers told the volunteers that their memories were not true, they often found it
difficult to believe, and some were angry. That‘s because, over time, we use our imaginations
to tell and retell the story of our memory until it becomes a very real thing. To many people,
it was disappointing to hear that their memory was wrong. Their memory was important to

them. It was like losing a friend. That‘s how I feel. I still think about how exciting it was to
ride a bike for the first time, but I know that what I remember isn‘t what really happened.

C.Grammar

Comparative & Superlative adjectives

The comparative and the superlative

Comparative adjectives:

Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two objects they modify
(larger, smaller, faster, higher). They are used in sentences where two nouns are compared, in
this pattern:

Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object).

The second item of comparison can be omitted if it is clear from the context (final example
below).

Examples

 My house is larger than hers.

 This box is smaller than the one I lost.
 Your dog runs faster than Jim's dog.
 The rock flew higher than the roof.
 Jim and Jack are both my friends, but I like Jack better. ("than Jim" is understood)

48
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

Superlative adjectives:

Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper or lower limit of a
quality (the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the highest). They are used in sentences where a
subject is compared to a group of objects.

Noun (subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun (object).

The group that is being compared with can be omitted if it is clear from the context (final
example below).

Examples

 My house is the largest one in our neighborhood.

 This is the smallest box I've ever seen.
 Your dog ran the fastest of any dog in the race.
 We all threw our rocks at the same time. My rock flew the highest. ("of all the rocks" is
understood)

Forming regular comparatives and superlatives

Forming comparatives and superlatives is easy. The form depends on the number of syllables in
the original adjective.

49
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

One syllable adjectives

Add -er for the comparative and -est for the superlative. If the adjective has a consonant +
single vowel + consonant spelling, the final consonant must be doubled before adding the
ending.

Adjective Comparative Superlative

tall taller tallest

fat fatter fattest

big bigger biggest

sad sadder saddest

50
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

Two syllables

Adjectives with two syllables can form the comparative either by adding -er or by preceeding
the adjective with more. These adjectives form the superlative either by adding -est or by
preceeding the adjective with most. In many cases, both forms are used, although one usage will
be more common than the other. If you are not sure whether a two-syllable adjective can take a
comparative or superlative ending, play it safe and use more and most instead. For adjectives
ending in y, change the y to an i before adding the ending.

Adjective Comparative Superlative

happy happier happiest

simple simpler simplest

busy busier busiest

tilted more tilted most tilted

tangled more tangled most tangled

51
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

Three or more syllables

Adjectives with three or more syllables form the comparative by putting more in front of the
adjective, and the superlative by putting most in front.

Adjective Comparative Superlative

important more important The most important

expensive more expensive The most expensive

52
English Department Time:____

Irregular comparatives and superlatives

These very common adjectives have completely irregular comparative and superlative forms.

Adjective Comparative Superlative

good better best

bad worse worst

little less least

much more most

far further / farther furthest / farthest

Examples

 Today is the worst day I've had in a long time.

 You play tennis better than I do.
 This is the least expensive sweater in the store.
 This sweater is less expensive than that one.
 I ran pretty far yesterday, but I ran even farther today.

How do we Make Comparative Adverbs?

There are three basic ways to make or "form" a comparative adverb:

1. One-syllable adverbs: add -er

If an adverb has only one syllable, we usually just add -er to make it comparative: fast
→ faster. Here are some examples:

adverb comparative adverb

fast faster

hard harder

high higher

late later

long longer

low lower

55
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

wide wider

Note that most one-syllable adverbs have the same form as their equivalent adjectives. Don't
let this confuse you. For example:

positive comparative

adjective a fast car a faster car

adverb he drives fast he drives faster

2. Two-syllable adverbs: use more

When an adverb has two or more syllables (like all -ly adverbs), we can make it comparative
by adding more in front: quickly → more quickly. Look at these examples:

adverb comparative adverb

carefully more carefully

56
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

efficiently more efficiently

happily more happily

horribly more horribly

often more often

quickly more quickly

recently more recently

slowly more slowly

sadly more sadly

strangely more strangely

57
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

We can also use less in place of more to suggest a reduction in the action. Look at these
examples:

sentence for example

She visits often. once a week

Now she visits more often. ↑ once a day

Now she visits less often. ↓ once a month

3. Irregular Adverbs

A few adverbs have irregular form, for example:

adverb comparative adverb

badly worse

early earlier

58
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

far further/farther

little less

much more

well better

Comparative Adverbs with Informal Forms

Note that a few adverbs have a formal ("correct") form with -ly and an informal form without -
ly. The same is then true of their comparative forms. Although you may hear some native
speakers using the informal form in speech, it is best avoided in formal situations and
examinations. The most common examples are:

adverb comparative adverb

cheap/cheaply cheaper/more cheaply

loud/loudly louder/more loudly

59
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

quick/quickly quicker/more quickly

slow/slowly slower/more slowly

Note that a few adverbs have NO comparative form, for example:

again, first
daily, yesterday
here, there
now, then
never, sometimes

How do we Use Comparative Adverbs?

Now that you know how to make comparative adverbs, let's see how to use them. Look at these
examples. Notice that we may use more to suggest an increase in the action and less to suggest
a decrease in the action. Notice also that the comparative adverb is often followed by than:

 Trains go fast but planes go faster.

 Planes go faster than trains.

 Trains don't go faster than planes.

 Trains go more slowly than planes.

 Planes go less slowly than trains.

 Joe won because he played better than Jane played.

 Joe won because he played better than Jane.

 Joe won because he played better.

 Did cities grow more quickly after the Industrial Revolution?

60
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

 He hit the ball more powerfully than his competitor.

 As we get older we remember things less easily.

 Could you talk a bit more quietly please?

 Could you talk a bit less loudly please?

 I can't hear you. Please speak louder/more loudly.

 We use comparative adverbs when talking about two actions (not three or more
actions). Comparison is always between TWO things.

 Although we use comparative adverbs when talking about two actions, in fact one
or both of the actions may be a group of actions.

 The planet Mercury revolves around the sun faster than all the other planets.

 Here, we are talking about eight planets, but we are still comparing one action
(Mercury's) to one other action (that of all the other planets).

B.Comprehension

Why Do Other People Influence Us So Much?

We have always learned from others

We have always been social animals. Thousands of years ago, we lived in small groups
and learned from other people. For example, we learned which fruits to eat by watching
what older people in our group chose to eat. That helped us to survive. In our modern
world, we continue to do what others do. It helps us be successful.

Imagine you are walking out of a movie theater. You are carrying a very large, empty
popcorn box, and you can‘t see any trash cans. You don‘t want to leave it on your seat
or on the floor. You think that‘s wrong. So, what do you do with it? Well, you look at
other people to see what they do. If everybody leaves the box, you do the same! It‘s not
right, but you do it because everybody does it!

In an experiment, some researchers worked with young children who were afraid of
dogs. Every day for 4 days, the children spent 20 minutes watching another young child
and his pet dog. The little boy loved his dog and played with him happily. At the end of
the experiment, most of the children weren‘t afraid of dogs. By watching the boy, they
learned to change how they felt.

Advertisers know that what other people think has a big

influence on us. That‘s why they use celebrities to tell
us to buy new products. We buy them, not because we
have objective proof that they are good, but because
famous people we like have told us they are good.

People often have different views about politics or society. In an

experiment, a group of people with very different views were asked to talk together.
They just argued and shouted! Then a group of people with similar views got
together. Some of these people had very strong views, but others felt much less
strongly about things. After a
discussion, researchers found that everybody in the group had strong views about the
subject. It seems that when we get together with people with the same views, it makes
our views stronger and clearer.
1 Read the article. Match the headings 1–4 to the paragraphs of the article A–D.
1. We aren‘t always influenced by people‘s opinions.
2. We buy things because other people say they are good.
3. We watch other people before we decide what to do.
4. We learn to control our fears by watching people.

we buy something. (paragraph C) (T / F)
5. People with similar views usually agree after they spend time together in a discussion
(paragraph D) (T / F)

3. Check (✓) the sentences that are true for you.

1. I often watch other people before I decide what to do.

What is Poetry?

Poetry can be thought of as a verbal, written art form that uses a heightened sense of
language to convey experience, feeling, or modes of consciousness. There is no concrete
definition for poetry. It means many different things to different people.

Literary Devices: Knowledge of these devices can help you discuss poetry with others, but it
will not necessarily help you experience poetry in a deeper sense.
Imagery: The words themselves are not necessarily the most important aspect of poetry. The
words invite you see, hear, feel, smell, or taste the details of life in an unusual or unexpected
way.
Example: The asphalt shrinks into the horizon
He diminishes in my rearview
His body heat dissipating from the passenger seat
His smoke streaming from my ashtray
Cologne lingers
And lingers

Symbolism allows you to attach ideas to things. In the example below, the author appears to be
using both a storm and a flower as symbols for life. Life can be seen both ways, and the poem is
clearly not just about storms or flowers.
There‘s a hole in your storm
And the clouds of experience bloom
Like revolving petals they form
And darken into a crumbling gloom

88
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

Other examples: A purple heart can symbolize bravery.

The Virgin Mary can symbolize purity.
A White flag can symbolize surrender.
The act of putting out a cigarette can symbolize murder.
Simile and Metaphor: These two literary devices are almost the same. A simile shows one
thing as ―similar‖ to something else—as in ―kisses as sweet as honey.‖ A simile usually
involves the word ―like‖ or ―as.‖ A metaphor presents one thing as though it actually is
something else—as in ―Fix upon me the dark embers of your eyes.‖ Here the author speaks of
eyes as though they really are embers.

Personification: giving human qualities to something not human.

―The wind murmured in the trees.‖
Irony: the use of opposite meanings to intensify the impression of something.
words used to convey the opposite of their apparent meaning, as in when one says ―Way to go!‖
to someone who has made a mistake

Hyperbole: literary Exaggeration, as in “I waited in line for centuries.”

Alliteration: words that sound alike at their beginnings.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street
Robert Frost

Repetition: shows a sense of urgency or importance, and also gives the option of adding music
to the writing. Also, repetition of a particular word, phrase, pattern, sound, or syllable is used to

89
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

get the attention of readers. Particular forms of repetition are anaphora refrain, syntactical, and
sonic.
Rhythm and Meter: The up and down, the high and low points in a poem comprise its rhythm
or it‘s pattern. The repetition of the pattern forms the meter. Combined, these two aspects of a
poem create an emotional sensation of stirring or swirling in the gut. In Shakespeare‘s McBeth,
the witches chant (note how the rhythm and meter of the words brings about a sensation of
stirring a cauldron:
Double, double toil and trouble
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake.
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Rhyme: words sounding alike at their endings. There are, however, different kinds of rhyme
besides straight rhyme.

The poet wrote about some of the world‘s most wonderful workers and how busy they are.
When we have finished our task, they will be still hard at work. The poet says that he is a fellow
worker, unlike the sea, rain, air and sun his task will soon be done because he will die one day.
His work is not as important as that of the four elements.

Commentary:
The rhyme scheme is aaaa, bbbb, cccc, dddd, eeee. Each stanza begin in the same way with the
same statement: ―I‘m busy‖. A clear, easy comparison is made. The poem consists of five
verses or stanzas.

“Questions”
1-What’s the theme of the poem?
The poet writes about the work of the four elements of nature and compares it to the man‘s
work. The work of nature will never finish while the work of man ends because he will die one
day.

2- What are the figures of speech in the poem?

In the poem the poet personifies the four elements of nature as if they were people who can talk
and have jobs to do.
This is clear in ――I‘m busy,‖ said the sea‖
The poet uses the alliteration in ―said the sea‖ to give music to the line.
The poet uses contrast in ―here‖ ―there‖ and ―up‖ ―down‖.

3- In what way is the man different from the elements of nature according to the poet in this
poem?
The work of man will finish one day because he will die while the work of nature will never
finish or come to an end.

Worst Game Ever?

Directions: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. Refer to the text to check
your answers when appropriate.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a video game that came out for the Atari 2600 game system in
1982. It was based on a very popular film of the same name. It cost over 125 million dollars to
make. Star programmer Howard Scott Warshaw created it with consultation from Steven
Spielberg. And it is widely considered to be one of the worst video games ever created. The
massive failure of E.T. and its effects on Atari is an often-mentioned reason for the video game
industry crash of 1983.

It was July 27th, 1982. Howard Scott Warshaw was hot off the success of his most recent game,
Raiders of the Lost Ark. He received a call from Atari C.E.O. Ray Kassar. Atari had bought the
rights to make a video game version of Spielberg's movie, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which had
just been released in June. Kassar told Warshaw that Spielberg had specifically asked for
Warshaw to make the game. Warshaw was honored, but there was one huge problem. Atari
needed the game finished by September 1st in order to start selling it during the Christmas
season.

It had taken Warshaw six months to create Raiders of the Lost Ark. The game he made prior to
that took him seven months. He was expected to create E.T. in around five weeks. Warshaw just
did not have enough time to program the game properly, but he accepted the challenge anyway
and production began. Spielberg wanted Warshaw to create a simple maze game, similar to
Pac-Man, but Warshaw had a bigger vision. He wanted players to explore different
environments in a 3D world. Warshaw followed his vision.

Atari anticipated that the game would be a huge success. Usually companies like Atari have
people test games before releasing them. If there is something that testers really dislike,
programmers can fix it before the public gets a chance to play. Atari decided to skip testing due
to time limitations. They wanted the game released during the holiday season. It was: E.T. was
released in December of 1982.

102
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

The game sold very well at first. It was a hot holiday item. Unfortunately, Atari overestimated
how many they would sell. They made 5 million copies and they only sold 1.5 million. Most
people who played the game hated it. The graphics were bad. Game play was awkward. Players
got stuck in holes that they couldn't escape. A short time limit made the game difficult to
explore and frustrating to play. Some people who stuck with the game grew to like it, but it
wasn't the mainstream success that Atari had hoped it would be.

Too many copies of the game sat on store shelves. One employee remembers the game being
discounted five times, from $49.95 to less than a dollar. Many people returned the game. Atari
was left with millions of unsold copies. In September of 1983, a newspaper in New Mexico
reported that between 10 and 20 semitrailer truckloads of Atari products were crushed and
buried at a landfill in Alamogordo. Perhaps a million or more copies of E.T. were buried in the
desert. When word got out, the drop site had to be covered with cement to prevent scavenging.

Atari lost over $100 million on E.T. The game was so bad that it was said to have affected
Atari's reputation. The video game industry soon fell into a deep depression. In 1983 the
industry made $3.2 billion. By 1985 profit fell to just over $100 million. This was almost a 97%
drop. Many critics believe that Atari's blunder on E.T. was one of the causes leading to this
depression. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial will long be remembered as one of the worst video games
ever made, if not one of the causes of the decline of the entire video game industry.

Online all the Time?

Text A
In a new report, experts say there is no need to worry too much if your teenage sons or
daughters are spending hours connecting with friends on social media. In fact, they argue it
is probably a good thing, as long as it is not getting in the way of homework or a good
night‘s sleep. According to the report, our generation is too quick to think that what kids are
doing must be bad for them. Just because teenagers are on their phones a lot, it doesn‘t mean
it‘s bad for their relationships. Interestingly, recent research says that being on social media
is usually a good thing.
The report also shows that young people with large social networks in real life use online
interactions to make their relationships stronger. Our children are not connecting to
strangers. Most teenagers usually use digital media to chat with the same friends they have in
real life. In other words, teenagers‘ online lives are no different from their experiences in the
offline world. Having a phone is not bad for kids – it just keeps them in touch with their
friends.
Text B

Taking time to connect with friends is important, but not as important as getting to bed
early, in my opinion. I make sure I switch my phone off at seven o‘clock. Then I can

Anna

OK, so I‘m on my phone all the time, but I don‘t see why it‘s bad. It‘s my time after all,
so why can‘t I stay up late? If I‘m texting, I‘m not wasting my time. I‘m just building up
my network of friends!
Danny

Text C

To the Editor,
I am writing to complain about your recent article, which argued that cell phones should not
be allowed in schools. It is true to say, as you do in your article, that there are problems
with the misuse of phones in class. Nobody wants to hear a ringtone during class, and some
students do waste time looking at their phone instead of studying. However, there
is another side of the argument. Students can use their phones to research information
online or do projects, for example, and having a cell phone in class is useful if there is an
emergency.
In the future, please present both sides of an argument in your reporting.
Yours,
Julia Haig

Are Our Earliest Memories

Actually Real?

When I was three years old, my parents bought me my first bike. I spent five days trying to
learn to ride it. Then, after hours and hours of practice, I stopped falling off or putting my
feet down, and I was cycling, faster and faster, along our street, with my dog chasing after
me. It‘s my earliest memory and I remember it really clearly, but actually, it isn‘t completely
true. Recently, my mom told me that she and dad didn‘t buy me a bike until I was seven, that
I learned to ride it really quickly – in minutes not days – and that back then, we didn‘t have a
dog. She remembers running along the street trying to catch me, but in my memory, I don‘t
remember her or my dad. I was really shocked to find out that my memory was false, but I
now know that there was no need to be surprised at all because a lot of our earliest memories
aren‘t true. Not long ago, researchers carried out one of the largest surveys of people‘s first
memories and discovered that the earliest memories of nearly 40% of people are false. To
find out what people remember from early childhood, the researchers asked volunteers to
give details of their first memory along with their age at the time. The memory had to be one
that they were certain they remembered. So, it couldn‘t be based on an old photograph or a
family story. It had to be from direct experience. Volunteers could choose how to write down
their memories – some just wrote notes or shorts descriptions, others wrote stories. When
they looked at the volunteers‘ descriptions and stories, they discovered that many of them
were memories of events that happened when people were only two or three years old. In the
opinion of many experts, these memories cannot be true because our minds are not able to
remember and record things that happen to us until we are at least three and a half years old.

131
English Department Time:____
Date:_________________

When researchers told the volunteers that their memories were not true, they often found it
difficult to believe, and some were angry. That‘s because, over time, we use our imaginations
to tell and retell the story of our memory in our head until it becomes a very strong and real
thing. To many people, it was very disappointing to hear that their memory was wrong.
Their memory was important to them. It was like losing a friend. That‘s how I feel. I still
think about how exciting it was to ride a bike for the first time, but sadly, I know that what I
remember isn‘t what really happened.

1.What do you think the article is about? Check (✓) a, b, or c. Then read the article and
check your answer.
a. It is about why our first memories are not always true.
b. It is about how our brain works to store memories.
c. It is about why we remember things in early childhood.

2. Read the article again. Choose the correct answers.

1. In the writer’s description of her first memory, which of the following is true?
a. She remembers how far she went on her bike that first time.
b. She remembers how long it took before she could ride the bike.
c. She remembers what her parents were doing at the time.
2. In what way is the writer’s memory of learning to ride a bike incorrect?
a. In reality, it took much longer to learn to ride the bike.
b. She never rode along the street as fast as she says.
c. She was older than she remembered when she first learned to ride a bike.

c. They asked them to write down the memory in the form of a story.
4. Why were researchers certain that some of the volunteers’ memories were not true?
a. Because some volunteers said they were under three at the time they formed the memory.
b. Because it was clear that some memories weren‘t based on direct experience.
c. Because people in the volunteers‘ families said the memory was just a story.
5. How do people often feel when they discover that their first memories are not true?
a. They are angry and want to forget the memory.

Why Do Other People Influence Us So Much?

We have always been social animals. In prehistoric times, we lived in small groups and
learned from others. For example, we learned which plants and fruits to eat by watching
what older people in our group chose to eat. We copied the behavior of the majority, and
that helped us to survive. It takes a long time to learn things by yourself – too long! In
our modern world, we continue to do what others do because it saves time and helps us
be successful.

Imagine you are walking out of a movie theater carrying a very large, empty popcorn
box. There are no trash cans anywhere. It seems irresponsible to just leave it or drop it.
So, what do you do with it? Well, you look at other people to see what they do. If
everybody walks into the street with it, you will probably do the same. But if somebody
leaves the box on their seat, you might decide to do that instead. And if everybody
leaves the box, well, you will do exactly the same! It‘s not right, but, hey, everybody
does it!

In an experiment, a group of researchers worked with young children who were afraid
of dogs. For 20 minutes a day over a period of 4 days, the children observed another
young child and his pet dog. The little boy loved his dog, and the two played together

happily. At the end of the experiment, most of the children were no longer afraid of
dogs. Their feelings changed after watching the boy interacting with his pet.

Advertisers understand that what other people think

has a big influence on us. That‘s why, in numerous
commercials, we see people telling us that something
is good. And these are people that we like and listen to.
For example, cool-looking kids tell us how fantastic a
new video game is, or celebrities tell us to buy a new
type of shampoo. We buy the products, not because
we have objective proof that they are good quality
or good value, but because other people have told us
they are good.

People often have different views about politics or society or the state of the planet. In
an experiment, a group of people with opposite views were put together. They just
argued and shouted! Then a group of people with similar views got together. Some of
these people had very strong views, but others felt much less strongly about the issues.
After a discussion, researchers found that everybody in the group now held strong
views about the subject. It seems that when we get together with people with similar
