(i)(a) Give two reasons why the Efficiency of a single movable Pulley system is not 100 %.

(b) An atomic nucleus denoted by A X emits an alpha particle. Write an equation to show the
formation of the daughter product.

(c ) ‘The position of the centre of gravity of a body remains unchanged even when the body is
defomed.’

State whether the statement is true or false. (1+1+1)

(ii)Two bodies A&B have masses in the ratio 5:1 and their kinetic energies are in ratio

125 : 9 .Find the ratio of their velocities.(2)

(iii)(a)How many pulleys are there in a movable block of a block and tackle system with velocity ratio 3?

(b) A radioactive nucleus emits a gamma ray. Does the position of a daughter nucleus change in a
periodic table as compared to the parent nucleus ? (1+1)

(iv ) A,B&C are three forces each of magnitude 4 N acting in a plane of paper as shown in the figure.
The point ‘O’ lies in the same plane.

(vii) How is the magnetic field around a straight conductor affected

Question3. (i)(a)Is it possible to switch off an appliance by placing the switch in a neutral wire ?
(b) Is it possible for current to flow between a neutral and an earth wire? (1+1)

(ii) A metal of mass 250 g is heated to a temperature of 65°C. It is then placed in 50g of water at
20°C.The final steady temperature of water becomes 25°C . Neglecting the heat taken by the
container, calculate the specific heat capacity of the metal. (1+1)

(iii).Find the equivalent resistance between points A and B. (1+1)

(iv) Why is it not advisable to use a piece of copper wire as fuse wire in an electric circuit? (1+1)

(v) When a tuning work (vibrating) is held closer to the ear, one hears a faint hum. The same
(vibrating tuning work) is held such that it’s stem is in contact with the table surface, then one hears
a loud sound. Explain. (1+1)

Section -B(40marks)

Question 4.(i) The diagram below shows a block and tackle system:

(a) Copy and redraw the labelled diagram showing the correct connection of tackle, Direction of the
forces involved to obtain the maximum VR and the convenient direction.
(b) Calculate the MA of this pulley system if it’s efficiency is 80 %. (3)

(ii) Figure shows a uniform metre rule placed on a fulcrum at its mid-point O and having a weight 40 gf
at the 10 cm mark and a weight of 20 gf at the 90 cm mark.
(a) Is the metre rule in equilibrium? If not, how will the rule turn ?
(b) How can the rule be brought in equilibrium by using an additional weight of 40 gf? (3)

(iii) A convex lens has a focal length of 20 cm.

(a) Calculate at what distance from the lens should an object be placed so that it form an image at a
distance of 40 cm on the other side of the lens.
(b) State the nature of the image formed. (4)

Question 5. (i)The water to a hydro station is supplied from a reservoir with water level being 50 m
above the turbine level. Assuming that only 40 % of the energy stored is available for power generation,
calculate the mass of water required to flow through the turbine to generate a power output of 1MW
per second. Assume g= 10 m/s². (3)

(ii) (a) State the energy changes in the cases while in use of steam engine .

(b)Name the physical quantity which is measured in calories.

(c) How is calorie related to the SI unit of that quantity? (3)

(iii) (a) Write a relationship between angle of incidence and angle of refraction for a given pair of media.

(b)When a ray of light enters from one medium to another having different optical densities it bends.
Why does this phenomenon occur ?

(c) Write one condition where it does not bend when entering a medium of different optical density.

(d) State the dependance of angle of deviation on the wavelength of the light. (4)

Question 6. (i) Draw the ray diagram of TIR in a right -angled isosceles prism to give a periscopic effect.

(ii) (a) Where should an object be placed so that a real and inverted image of the same size as the object
is obtained using a convex lens?

(b)Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the image as specified in part (a). (3)

(iii) A person standing between two vertical Cliffs and 48 m from the nearest Cliffs shouts. He is the first
echo after 3 years and second echo after 2 s letter .Calculate

(i) The speed of sound.


(ii) The distance of the other cliff from the person . (4)
Question 7. (i)

The diagram above shows a wire stretched over a sonometer. Set of two vibrating tuning forks A and B
are touched to the wooden box of the sonometer. It is observed that the paper rider (a small piece of
paper folded at the centre) present on the wire flies off when the stem of vibrating tuning fork B is
touched to the wooden box, but the paper just vibrates when the stem of vibrating tuning fork A is
touched to the wooden box.

(a) Name the phenomenon when the paper rider just vibrates.
(b) Name the phenomenon when the paper rider flies off.
(c) Why does the paper rider fly off when the stem of tuning fork B is touched to the box? (3)

(ii)Draw two waves of

(a) High pitch and low amplitude


(b) Low pitch and high amplitude. (3)

(iii)Two cells each of EMF 1.5 V and internal resistance 1.0 ohm are connected in parallel to form a
“battery”. The battery is connected to an external resistance of 0.5 ohm and two resistance of 3.0 ohm
and 1.5 ohm in parallel.

(a)Draw the circuit diagram as above.

(b) Calculate the current in the ‘main' circuit

(c)Current in the 1.5 ohm resistance . (4)


Question 8. (i)In the following diagram an arrow shows the motion of coil towards the bar magnet .

(b) State the law used to come to the conclusion ?

(c)Why does freely suspended solenoid rest along a particular direction? (3)

(ii) A piece of ice of mass 60g is dropped into 140g of water at 50⁰C . Calculate the final temperature of
the mixture when all the ice has melted. Sp heat capacity of water=4.2J/g/K, Sp latent heat of fusion of
ice =336J/g. (3)

(iii) (a) You have a choice of three metals A,B and C of specific heat capacity 900 J/kg/K, 380 J/kg/K and
460 J/kg/K respectively to make a calorimeter . Which material will you select? justify your answer.

(b ) How is transference of heat energy by radiation prevented in calorimeter?

(c ) Heat is supplied to a solid changes it into liquid. What is the energy absorbed during the phase
change called?

(d)During the phase change does the KE of molecules of the substance increase? (4)

Question 9. (i)(a) A thorium isotope 232Th90 undergoes an alpha decay and changes to radium . What is
the atomic number and mass number of radium ?

(b)If the radium as above undergo further disintegration to beta particles represent the reaction in the
form of an equation.

(c)State anyone precaution that can be taken while handling radioactive substance? (3)

(ii) Complete the following equation:-. (3)

(iii)(a)Radioactive substance is oxidized will there be any change in the nature of radioactivity give a
reason for your answer.
(b)Complete the diagram as given below by drawing the deflection of radioactive radiations in an
electric field. (4)
