Syllabus: Master Class Foundations for Excellence

in Teaching Online
Course Description
This two-week, fully-online workshop is designed to facilitate knowledge and peer
sharing of strategies for designing and teaching online courses. Taught in Open edX
and facilitated by members of the ASU EdPlus team, participants will complete activities
as students, using technologies and pedagogy designed to enhance online learning.
Workshop activities require a minimum of 8 hours per week but may take more time
depending on comfort levels with the language, previous capabilities with the
technologies, and exploration of the various links and resources.

The emphasis in this workshop is effective online pedagogy and offers only a minimal
amount of Open edX technical training. Future workshops will explore specific
techniques for building in the Open edX platform.

A certificate of completion is presented to all participants who complete the Master

Class workshop with a score of 80 percent.

Track Your Progress

You are encouraged to keep track of your own progress in this workshop by using the
Assignment Tracker checklist provided in Module 0 of the course as well as checking
your grades regularly in the Progress tab of the course (upper left). Please note
assignments with a “Waiting for Staff Grade” advisory are manually graded by the
Facilitators and may take up to 72 hours after the due date.

Communication
General Discussion Group (Community Forum)

This workshop uses a discussion area called “Community Forum” to answer general
questions and comments about the workshop and assignments. You can find it in the
Discussion tab called “Community Forum” or in the “Welcome” module. Facilitators and
peers can post questions and respond to each other’s questions in the Community
Forum. Prior to posting a question or comment, check the syllabus, announcements,
and existing posts to ensure the question has not already been asked and answered.
You are encouraged to respond to the questions of your classmates.
Email

Email questions regarding course content to your facilitators at IEITraining@asu.edu (or

any communication mechanism your specific facilitator provides). You can expect a
response within 48 hours on weekdays and 72 hours on weekends (please note there
is a 10-hour time difference for some facilitators).

Email questions about technical support to eshe.support@asu.edu.

Participants are expected to read and act upon email in a timely fashion. Participants
bear the responsibility of missed messages and should check their email regularly.

5
Accessibility and Inclusion

We are committed to creating a course that is inclusive in its design, but we may have
missed something. If you encounter barriers, please let us know immediately so that we
can determine if there is a design adjustment that can be made or if an accommodation
might be needed to overcome the limitations of the design. We are always happy to
consider creative solutions if they do not compromise the intent of the assessment or
learning activity.

The syllabus is a statement of intent and serves as an implicit agreement between the
instructor and the participant. Every effort will be made to avoid changing the workshop
schedule, but the possibility exists that unforeseen events will make syllabus changes
necessary. Remember to check your email and the workshop site often.
