I want to make it clear that I wrote this with my own time, and
without permission from the original filmmakers and producers.

As a screenwriting major in Los Angeles, I really wanted to read

the screenplay to my favorite movie, Your Name, but I couldn't
find a copy of it anywhere (Japanese or English).

So I came up with the bright idea to write my own!

This project was super fun for me as I was able to really study
the movie and its details. It also serves as fun writing
practice, a way to force myself to write everyday, and something
to serve up as a sample of my writing style.

I hope that you all enjoy the read, and please feel free to
critique me and point out any mistakes-- format, spelling, or
grammatical-- as it'll help me improve my future projects!

Thank you so much and keep dreaming!

-Jake

I found Jake’s script on Reddit a while back, and saw the

incredible job he did adapting this script to English (seriously,
his stage directions are gorgeous). I had talked with a friend
about doing a read-along to this movie since we both love it so
much, so I built upon all the hard work he did by adapting the
English dub dialogue to Jake’s already completed script. Each
line is accompanied by a timestamp to help you keep track of
lines, along with a list of characters up top to easily assign
out parts.

I also want to make it clear that this was a personal project

done without permission from Funimation, original filmmakers or
producers. This is not an official dub script from Funimation,
nor is it intended for commercial use in any form.

Thanks so much!

EXT. ITOMORI - SKY - NIGHT

We are so high in the sky that sunlight still peaks

over the horizon, bouncing off the tops of the
clouds.

Meteorites glow red as they fall towards Earth. Many

fragments disintegrate in the atmosphere, but the
largest piece dives into the clouds.

The sound of wind whistles as the camera tracks the falling

comet.

The comet bursts through the cloud cover, revealing

a darkened prefecture surrounding a large lake.

We watch as the comet descends onto Itomori.

A cell phone alarm rings.

FADE IN:

INT. MITSUHA’S HOUSE - BEDROOM - DAY

Warm sunlight shines through the windows. A futon

mattress lays on the floor.

There are many different timelines to this story, however

the main one will be when Taki and Mitsuha are both 17.

The alarm continues to ring as Mitsuha (17) sleeps on the

mattress.

MITSUHA (V.O.)3:49
Taki. Taki. Taki! Don’t you
remember?

CUT TO:
INT. SUBWAY - DAY - DREAMLIKE

Mitsuha, caught in a mass of people leaving the car, tosses

a braided cord, her handmade braided cord used to tie her
hair, towards Taki, still in the car.

TAKI 4:00
[GASPS]

MITSUHA 4:00
[GASPS]
My name is... Mitsuha!
[GASPS again, jolts awake]

CUT BACK TO:

BEDROOM

Mitsuha (Taki) jolts up, panting. She takes a look around

the room, confused. A neatly organized, Japanese-style room
with sliding doors.

She looks down at her breasts.

MITSUHA 4:23
Huh?

She slowly gropes them, confused and flustered.

MITSUHA 4:35
Hm? Mmm. Mmmmmm.

Taki is in Mitsuha’s body.

Mitsuha, completely captivated by the feeling, doesn’t

notice when the bedroom door slides open.

YOTSUHA MIYAMIZU (9), a sassy young girl with pigtails,

stands awkwardly watching Mitsuha-- her older sister-- touch
her breasts.

Beat.

YOTSUHA (CONT'D) 4:42

Sis, what are you doing?

MITSUHA 4:44
(to herself) Woah. They’re so realistic
feeling.
Mitsuha turns towards Yotsuha, startled, and points to
herself.

MITSUHA (CONT'D)4:48
Hm? Sis? Me?

YOTSUHA 4:50
Are you still asleep?
Breakfast time! Hurry up!

Yotsuha slams the door.

Mitsuha trudges towards the full-body mirror and takes her

pajamas off.

Beat.

Mitsuha sees her naked body.

MITSUHA 5:15
Huh? Wha-
Mitsuha sees her naked body.

MITSUHA (CONT'D)5:17
(Gasps) What?!

DINING ROOM - THE NEXT DAY

A traditional Japanese home. Open large doors that allow

sunlight to shine through, and a low dining table with no
chairs.

HITOHA MIYAMIZU (82), a wise and spiritual

grandmother, kneels at the dining table in a yukata.

Yotsuha brings a few bowls of soup to the table.

YOTSUHA 5:26
Do you wanna have any a last
night’s fish, Grandma?

HITOHA 5:29
You can eat it.

Mitsuha jogs in, dressed in her school uniform.

MITSUHA 5:31
Mornin’!
HITOHA 5:32
Mornin’.

YOTSUHA 5:32
Lazy butt! You’re so slow!

MITSUHA 5:35
I’ll fix breakfast tomorrow.

Mitsuha serves herself some rice, familiar with the space

and humming to herself. Hitoha and Yotsuha watch her
intently.

Mitsuha piles rice into her bowl.

MITSUHA (CONT'D) 5:42

(mumbles to herself)
Oh, that’s a lot. Oh
well!

HITOHA 5:45
You’re back to normal today.

Mitsuha 5:47
Huh?

YOTSUHA 5:47
(giggles)
You were so crazy yesterday.

MITSUHA 5:49
What do you mean, crazy?

A bell chimes through a radio in the house and a

woman’s voice comes through.

The voice rings through the entire town and we see

tall speakers posted all over Itomori, carrying the
same signal. This is how the Town Hall communicates
with the locals.

ANNOUNCER WOMAN (V.O.)5:53

Attention citizens of Itomori.

The announcer pauses between phrases to let the

echo dissipate.

ANNOUNCER WOMAN (V.O.)5:57

Good morning. This is an official
announcement from Itomori Town
Hall. It is in regards to the
mayoral election. The election
will be held on the 20th of next
month. The election committee
would like to remind everyone
that...

Hitoha unplugs the radio from the wall, angry.

Mitsuha turns on the TV to a news channel. A female anchor

speaks with a picture of the COMET beside her.

A bar of text below her reads, “Comet Tiamat to pass by in a

month: Visible to the naked eye”.

ANCHOR (V.O.)6:13
A comet that comes only once every
1,200 years will finally be headed
our way in a month. The comet will
be visible to the naked eye for
several days once it approaches
the Earth...

The anchor’s voice fades to the background as Yotsuha speaks

to Hitoha.

YOTSUHA 6:23
Just make it up with him already, okay?

MITSUHA 6:25
It’s an adult matter.

The anchor’s voice comes back in.

CU of the TV showing a diagram of the comet’s trajectory.

A text bar at the bottom reads, “Position of Comet

Tiamat”.

ANCHOR (V.O.)6:26
According to JAXA’s spokesperson,
they’re preparing for the
celestial show of the millennium.

MITSUHA'S BEDROOM

Mitsuha opens a small cosmetic drawer, revealing a few hair

ties. A long BRAIDED CORD, majority red with a little orange
and blue design in the center.

This is the same cord that she gave Taki on the subway.
We watch as she braids her hair into two pigtails then
intricately ties it with the braided cord, forming a perfect
bow.

EXT. MITSUHA'S HOUSE - DAY

Their large, two-story home is tucked in the mountain,

surrounded by trees.

MITSUHA 6:48 YOTSUHA 6:48

(O.C.) (O.C.)
We’re leaving! We’re leaving!

Mitsuha and Yotsuha walk down a concrete road.

YOTSUHA 6:52
I can’t wait till the
festival! It’s gonna be
so much fun!

EXT. ITOMORI - DAY

Beautiful and rural, Itomori is built around an enormous

lake and is surrounded by mountains.

Mitsuha and Yotsuha wave goodbye as their schools are

down different paths.

Mitsuha walks alone down the cliffside when the ringing of a

bike bell grabs her attention.

Mitsuha’s friends, SAYAKA NATORI (17), a small, cheerful

girl in braided pigtails, and KATSUHIKO (TESHI) TESHIGAWARA
(17), a kindhearted and driven boy, ride together on a bike.

Sayaka sits behind Teshi as he does all the work.

SAYAKA 7:14
(cheerful)
Oh! Mitsuha!

MITSUHA 7:18
Good mornin’, Saya! Mornin’, Teshi.

SAYAKA 7:20
Mornin’!
TESHI 7:21
Come on! Would you get off already?

SAYAKA 7:23
What for, meanie?

TESHI 7:24
‘Cause you’re too heavy.

SAYAKA 7:25
Hey, that’s rude.

Mitsuha smiles and continues down the road.

MITSUHA 7:26
You know, I’ve gotta say, you two make a great
couple.

SAYAKA 7:28 TESHI 7:28

No we don’t! No we don’t!
Sayaka gets off the bike and walks with Mitsuha. Teshi rides
his bike slowly beside them.

SAYAKA (CONT'D)7:32
Oh, I see you actually bothered
to do your hair today.

MITSUHA 7:34
Wait, what?

TESHI 7:36
Oh yeah, what happened? Did your
grandma exorcize all your demons?

MITSUHA 7:38
Exorcize?

TESHI 7:40
Somethin’ totally possessed your body!

SAYAKA 7:42
Wouldja just give it a rest with
all this occult nonsense?
Mitsuha’s gotta be feelin’
stressed enough as it is, right?
MITSUHA 7:48
What’re you guys talkin’ about?

TESHI 7:50
Are you feelin’ okay?
(Noticing what’s past the bridge)
Hm?

KADOIRI - BRIDGE - CONTINUOUS

They cross a stone bridge with a stream running beneath it.

Beautiful nature surrounds them on their walk to school.

Across the bridge, a few locals gather around a parking lot

listening to TOSHIKI MIYAMIZU (54), the strong, commanding
mayor of Itomori, and also Mitsuha’s father.

Toshiki speaks through a microphone.

TOSHIKI 7:53
...and above all, restoring the
town’s fiscal health so we can
continue our revitalization
project! It’s only when all these
things are achieved that we can
create a safe and secure
community!

Mitsuha and her friends stroll behind the crowd.

Toshiki stands with his fellow politicians beside him.

TOSHIKI (CONT'D)
As the incumbent, my administration has...

A local man near the back mutters to his wife.

LOCAL MAN 8:09

Miyamizu’s gonna get another
term anyway.

WIFE 8:11
I hear he’s been dolin’ out
the pork, just between us.

Mitsuha, Sayaka, and Teshi run into a few other classmates.

KAZUYA (17), SAKURA (17) and HANA (17).

KAZUYA 8:14
Hey, Miyamizu.

MITSUHA 8:16
Mornin’.

KAZUYA 8:18
(RE: Mitsuha and Teshi)
Looks like the mayor and the
contractor’s kid are pretty
cozy, too.

The two girls beside him giggle.

Mitsuha, Teshi, and Sayaka ignore them and continue walking,

heads down.

Toshiki notices Mitsuha walking by. He puts his microphone

down.

TOSHIKI 8:25
Hm? Mitsuha!

MITSUHA 8:28
(Gasps)

Mitsuha freezes. Embarrassed.

TOSHIKI (CONT'D)8:28
Stand up straight when you’re walking!

Flustered, Mitsuha fixes her postures and continues without

a word.

All the locals stare at her.

OLD WOMAN 8:31

Oh, he’s tough on his family.

LOCAL WORKER 8:34

Well, that’s the mayor for ya.

HANA 8:35
Awkward.

SAKURA 8:36
Sucks to be her.

Mitsuha quickens her pace.

SAYAKA 8:39
Mitsuha...
MITSUHA 8:41
(mutters)
In front of everyone…

INT. CLASSROOM - LATER

Everyone sits in their individual seats. The teacher, Yukari

Yukino (27), passionate and friendly, writes on the
chalkboard.

Mitsuha flips through her notebook and finds a

message written in black pen.

“WHO ARE YOU?”

Mitsuha stares confused.

MITSUHA 8:48
Hm??

Yukino finishes writing a word on the chalkboard.

“TASOKARE” (Twilight).

YUKINO 8:57
“Two-light.” That’s the origin of
the word “twilight”. I’m sure
everyone here knows that word. It’s
dusk, a time when it’s neither day
nor night. When the border between
worlds blur, and one might
encounter something not human.

She turns back towards the chalkboard and writes another

word down.

YUKINO (CONT'D) 9:12

Another older term for it is
“dusklight”. Some people also call
it “golden hour”.

STUDENT 9:19
What about “magic hour”? It’s
somethin’ my grandma says.

YUKINO 9:22
Well, golden hour and magic
hour are technically the same.
But it’s a term that mostly
photographers use.

STUDENT 9:29
Well, she does take a lot of pictures.

The kids laugh.

Mitsuha, not paying attention, flips through the rest of her

notebook, checking for other messages. She returns to the
original page and studies it.

“WHO ARE YOU?”

MITSUHA 9:33
Hmm...hm??

YUKINO 9:34
Okay, next, Miyamizu.

Mitsuha snaps back to attention. She stands quickly.

MITSUHA 9:37
Uh! Yes!

YUKINO 9:38
Well, I can see that you
remember your own name
today.

Everyone laughs.

MITSUHA 9:43
Hm?

EXT. SCHOOL - FIELD - DAY

The high school is on the far side of the lake, nestled high
in the hills, giving the students and faculty a beautiful
view of the surrounding area.

Mitsuha, Teshi, and Sayaka sit under a tree eating lunch.

SAYAKA 9:45
You don’t remember?

MITSUHA 9:47
Uh-uh.

SAYAKA 9:48
Well, believe it or not, you
forgot where your own desk and
locker were yesterday. Plus you
had the worst case of
bedhead,and you didn’t have your
ribbon on either.

Mitsuha imagines the situation...

MITSUHA 9:55
(Chuckles evilly)

...then brushes it off.

MITSUHA 9:57
Mm! What? No Way!

SAYAKA 10:00
Yeah, it was like you had
amnesia or somethin’.

MITSUHA 10:03
Now that you mention it, I do
feel like I’ve havin’ weird
dreams lately... Like a dream
about someone else’s life?

MITSUHA(CONT’D) 10:11
Ugh...it’s all so fuzzy.

Teshi, reading a tabloid, speaks up.

TESHI 10:14
Wait a sec. I’ve got it! It’s
memories from a previous life!

He shows the girls his tabloid covered in

conspiracy theories.
TESHI (CONT'D)
Or maybe your subconscious
linked to the Everett
interpretation of the
multiverse!

SAYAKA 10:21
Keep your fool mouth shut!

MITSUHA 10:23
Wait a minute, Teshi, don’t
tell me you’re the one who
wrote in my notebook!
Teshi gives Mitsuha a puzzled look. Mitsuha
loses confidence.

TESHI 10:27
Huh?

MITSUHA (CONT'D)10:29
Forget it.

SAYAKA 10:31
But you really were actin’ just a little funny
yesterday, Mitsuha.

Beat. Teshi nods.

SAYAKA (CONT'D)10:36
You been feelin’ okay?

MITSUHA 10:38
That’s what’s weird. I feel fine.

SAYAKA 10:42
Maybe it’s from stress. Y’know
you’ve got that ritual comin’
soon, dont’cha??

MITSUHA 10:46
(whining)
Aww! Don’t remind me! I can’t
stand this place anymore. It’s
too small and town-y. I want to
graduate already and go to Tokyo
as soon as I can!

SAYAKA 10:56
Can’t say I blame you. There
really is nothin’ at all in this
town.

CUT TO:
EXT. ITOMORI - LATER

Mitsuha and Sayaka walk while Teshi bikes close behind

them. They cross a train track on their way home from
school, along with mom-and-pop shops and practices.
SAYAKA 11:03(Cont’d)
There’s only one train that stops
here every two hours.

MITSUHA 11:05
And all the stores close at 9 o’clock.

SAYAKA 11:07
No bookstores, no dentists.

MITSUHA 11:09
But two cocktail lounges for whatever reason.

SAYAKA 11:11

No jobs in town.

MITSUHA 11:12

No one datatable.

SAYAKA 11:14
Even the days are too short!
Teshi faces two annoyed girls.

TESHI 11:17
(Grumbles) You know what?!

MITSUHA 11:20 SAYAKA 11:20

No, what? No, what?

TESHI 11:22
Forget that stuff. Why don’t we
go to a café?
Beat. The girls look shook.

MITSUHA 11:25 SAYAKA 11:25

Really? A café?

They stare at Teshi with hopeful eyes.

MITSUHA 11:26 SAYAKA 11:26

Where? Where?
CUT TO:

EXT. VENDING MACHINE - LATER

Teshi and Sayaka sit on a rusty bench by a road. An old
vending machine spits out a can of juice. Weeds and dirt
surround the patchy grass, and Teshi uses a cinder block as
a footrest.

The neighborhood Shiba Inu sleeps at Teshi’s feet. A woman

on a moped trots past.

OLD WOMAN 11:32

Hello, kids.

Teshi and Sayaka nod politely.

TESHI 11:33 SAYAKA 11:33

Evening, ma’am! Hi there!

Beat.

The two sip their drinks.

SAYAKA 11:39
How is this a café?

TESHI 11:40
Like this town’s got a café.

SAYAKA 11:43
Mitsuha just went straight home.
Things have gotta be really rough
for her right now.

TESHI 11:49
Well, she’s on center stage and all.

SAYAKA 11:51
Yeah...

Teshi plays with the dog.

SAYAKA (CONT'D) 11:56

Hey, Teshi.

TESHI 11:58
Hm?
SAYAKA 11:59
What’re you gonna do after you
graduate high school?

TESHI 12:02
Where’d that come from? You
talkin’ about the future?

Sayaka nods.

SAYAKA 12:05
Mh-hm.

Beat.

TESHI (CONT'D) 12:06

I don’t know. I think I’ll
probably just end up livin’ in
this town, y’know? Same as ever.

INT. MIYAMIZU SHRINE - NIGHT

Mitsuha, Yotsuha, and their grandmother, Hitoha, sit on the

tatami floor. The three wear traditional yukatas as they
make braided cords.

Yotsuha, being the youngest, rolls thread onto spools.

Mitsuha and Hitoha use different colored threads and a
weaver to make intricate cords like the one in
Mitsuha’s hair.

We see the meticulous process as spools moved and sticks are

used to tighten the patterns.

YOTSUHA 12:27
(Sighs) I wanna do what you’re doin’.

HITOHA 12:30
It’s still too soon for you to
try, Yotsuha. Listen to the
thread’s voice. When you twine it
round and round like this,
feelin’s will start flowin’
between you and the thread.

YOTSUHA 12:42
(discouraged) It’s not like
threads talk.

MITSUHA 12:45
She’s tellin’ you to focus.

HITOHA 12:46
Etched within our braided cords
is a thousand years’ worth of
Itomori’s history. Listen,
somethin’ happened 200 years
ago...

MITSUHA 12:56
Here she goes...

HITOHA 12:58
The bathroom of sandal maker
Mayugoro Yamazaki caught on fire,
and this whole area burned down.
The shrine and old documents were
destroyed. This is known as-

MITSUHA 13:10
(promptly)
Mayugoro’s Great Fire.

YOTSUHA 13:12
They named the fire after
him? I feel bad for
Mayugoro.

HITOHA 13:17
The meanin’ behind our festivals
was lost because of that. Only
the surface was left. But even if
those words are gone, tradition
shouldn’t fade.

That’s the Miyamizu Shrine’s

duty, our important task.

Hitoha sighs and pauses her work. She kneads her aching
shoulder.

HITOHA (CONT'D)13:33
(Sighs) Despite all that, that son-in-law of
mine...

Mitsuha looks hurt.

HITOHA (CONT'D)13:38
Abandonin’ Shinto priesthood and
leavin’ this house were bad
enough, but politics? Oh! He’s
hopeless.
INT. TESHI’S HOUSE - DINING ROOM - NIGHT

A very modest and traditional Japanese home. Mitsuha’s

father, Toshiki, and Teshi’s father, DAISUKE (50s), drink
and chat with other government officials.

TOSHIKI 13:47
Have another, Mr. Foreman.

EMPLOYEE 13:49
Eh, the site we’ve got is a tricky one, that’s
for sure.

Toshiki pours sake into Daisuke’s cup.

TOSHIKI 13:53
I’ll be counting on your help again for this
election.

Sakagami Districts, guaranteed.

LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Teshi sips tea with his mom, MRS. TESHIGAWARA (40s), in

the living room. We hear the muffled laughs and chatter
from the dining room.

TESHI 14:05
(smirks) Smells like corruption in
there.

MRS. TESHIGAWARA 14:07

What’re you talkin’ about?
Daisuke barges into the living room, red in the cheeks.

DAISUKE 14:10
We’re gonna need two or three more bottles.

MRS. TESHIGAWARA 14:11

Yes, dear.

Daisuke stumbles towards the bathroom, while calling out

to his son.

DAISUKE 14:13
Katsuhiko, you’re gonna help out
at the site this weekend. We’ll
be usin’ explosives, so you
better study up.

TESHI 14:19
Mm.

DAISUKE 14:19
(commanding) What was that?

TESHI 14:20
Got it!

TESHI’S ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Lit only from the moonlight, Teshi sits by the window. The
soft chirp of crickets and rustling winds muffle the party
inside.

We hear a soft wind instrument playing far away.

Teshi stares at a glowing shrine in the distance.

TESHI 14:35
Guess we both can’t stand things around here.

EXT. MIYAMIZU SHRINE - TEMPLE - NIGHT

A small stage raised above the ground. Charms hang from the
ceiling. Two torches give light to the surrounding area as
people gather to see Mitsuha and Yotsuha, clad in shrine
maiden attire, perform a dance.

The fire crackles. No one makes a sound.

A soft beat of a drum, and a high-pitched, whistling melody
play from a speaker to the side.

Mitsuha and Yotsuha are perfectly synced, with bells in

their right hand, and a red sash in the other.

LOCAL MAN 14:56

Is that Yotsuha? She’s all
grown up.

WOMAN 14:59
They’re lookers alright, just
like their mother.

Standing beside the two, on a balcony is Sayaka, watching

quietly.
Teshi walks in from behind.

TESHI 15:03
Hey-a.

SAYAKA 15:05
Hey.

They watch in silence as Mitsuha and Yotsuha finish their

dance. Hitoha sits on a pillow behind them, watching with
her eyes closed.

Once the dance is finished, no one claps.

Mitsuha and Yotsuha unfold some wrapping paper to

reveal cooked rice.

The two use their right hands, perfectly synched, and place
a small amount in their mouth. They chew softly.

TESHI 15:38
World’s oldest kind of sake. By
chewin’ on rice, spittin’ it out,
and then lettin’ it ferment, it
becomes alcohol.

SAYAKA 15:46
“Kuchikamizake”. Do the gods
really appreciate that? The
way it’s made -
TESHI 15:51
(Cutting her off) Yeah! Of course they do!

In the back, Kazuya, Sakura and Hana arrive.

KAZUYA 15:55
Hey, check it out. It’s Miyamizu.

Mitsuha and Yotsuha let the chewed rice leak out of their
mouths while covering their face with their long sleeves.

It isn’t enough to shield the action completely however, and

the three classmates see her spitting it out.

HANA 16:03
Ugh! I’d never do that!

SAKURA 16:05
And in front of everybody.

HANA 16:07
Embarrassing, right?

Mitsuha notices their appalled faces, but she swallows her

pride and continues.

The two sisters wrap up the rice sake in a wooden box.

EXT. MIYAMIZU SHRINE - LATER

The two sisters, back in normal clothes, exit the

shrine. The crowd is gone and the two walk back home.

YOTSUHA 16:23
You should try to cheer up, Sis.
Who cares if a few of the kids
from your school saw all of
that?

MITSUHA 16:29
It must be nice for you, not
being a teenager.

YOTSUHA 16:32
Hey, I know! You should just sell
kuchikamizake and move to Tokyo.
MITSUHA 16:36
[CROSS] Wha-?

YOTSUHA 16:37
I bet you could sell it with all
sorts of stuff, like photos and
making-of videos. Oh! And then you
could call it “Shrine Maiden
Sake”. You’ll make butt-loads!

MITSUHA 16:46
Hmm...

Mitsuha ponders the idea.

MITSUHA 16:50
I can’t! There are liquor laws!

YOTSUHA 16:52
Huh? That’s what you have a problem with?

Mitsuha runs ahead down the large flight of stairs leading

up to the shrine, flustered and embarrassed by her family.

TORII GATE - CONTINUOUS

Mitsuha arrives at the large torii gate overlooking the

large lake at the base of the hill. She yells into the
night.

MITSUHA 17:02
I hate this town! I hate this
life, too! Please make me a
handsome Tokyo boy in my next
life!

Yotsuha stares with judging eyes, sighs, and follows

her sister.
YOTSUHA 17:15
(Sighs, then to herself) What a
jackass...

FADE TO BLACK.

INT. TOKYO - TAKI'S ROOM - DAY

CU of a smartphone as the alarm rings.

A messy boy’s room with books scattered on the floor
and table, and yesterday’s pants still on the floor.

TAKI (Mitsuha)(17), a high school boy living in Tokyo,

groggily wakes up. He feels for his phone on the floor.

He reaches and reaches, and ends up falling to the floor.

TAKI 17:41
(Grunts as he strains to reach
the ringing phone) ACK - Ow.

TAKI 17:49
Ouch.

Pulling the sheets off his head, he sees his room for
the first time.

TAKI 17:55
Huh-
TAKI 18:00
Where--

He grabs his throat-- his chest-- a cold sweat.

TAKI 18:02
[GASPS/GRUNTS slightly as he moves down his body]

Mitsuha is in Taki’s body.

Taki looks down at crotch.

TAKI 18:12 (CONT'D)

Somethin’s...there

He slowly reaches down to touch his penis. He jolts upwards,

red from embarrassment.

TAKI 18:20
AAAAAHHHHHH!

BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Taki splashes his face with water and stares long and hard
at himself in the mirror.

TAKI 18:25
[GASPS/BREATHES HEAVILY]

We see a big band-aid on his cheek. He touches it

and flinches at the pain.

TAKI 18:28
[WINCES at the pain]

MR. TACHIBANA 18:29 (O.S.)

Taki! You up?

LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

A small Tokyo apartment. A single dining table by the

balcony window with a small TV beside it.

Taki’s dad, Mr. Tachibana (50s), your average

inner-city office worker, watches the news on his
tablet while eating breakfast.

MR. TACHIBANA 18:33

It was your turn to cook
breakfast, wasn’t it? Did you
sleep in?

Taki hides by the doorway.

TAKI 18:37
(Shy) Uh. I’m sorry.

Mr. Tachibana is a bit confused by his son’s timid response.

MR. TACHIBANA 18:38

Hm? I’m heading out. Finish the
miso.

TAKI 18:43

O-Okay.
HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

Very narrow with books and boxes piled off to the side.
Mr. Tachibana heads for the door.

MR. TACHIBANA 18:44

Make sure that you go to school
even if you’re late. See ya.

TAKI 18:49
Have a nice day!

Mr. Tachibana leaves the apartment. Taki (Mitsuha), all

alone, stares at the scene around him.

TAKI 19:01 (CONT'D)

What a strange dream.

An alarm goes off, scaring Taki.

TAKI 19:04
[GASPS]

BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

CU of Taki’s phone with a text from TSUKASA (17), Taki’s

high school friend-- the sexy, intellectual type, that
reads, “RUN, YOU’RE LATE!”.

Taki holds the phone, nervous.

TAKI 19:08
Huh? It’s from...Tsukasa? Who’s that?

Beat.

Taki sees his school uniform hanging on the wall and takes
it off.

Taki blushes.

TAKI 19:20
[GROANS] I gotta go pee.

SOUND CUE: a toilet flushing.

CUT TO:

EXT. TAKI’S APARTMENT - DAY

Taki exits the apartment, dressed in his school uniform. He

heaves a sigh of relief.
TAKI 19:33
[SIGHS] Way too real.

Taki looks out from the apartment balcony. He is on the top

story, overlooking the city of Tokyo.

Taki walks towards the rail, taking in the view. Tall

skyscrapers tower over the horizon. The sunlight bouncing
off the steel frames and glass windows.

MONTAGE TOKYO

...A bridge and a few skyscrapers. The sunlight flares in

the corner, reflecting off the tallest building. A flock of
crows fly across the sky.

...Heavy traffic and street construction. Orange dividers

separate the lane as cars drive back and forth.

...The same back and forth motion with the subways in an

extreme wide, aerial shot of Shinjuku Station. So many
tracks and so many subways all weave between each other.

...Large TV screens on the sides of buildings displaying

ads.

END MONTAGE.

EXT. SHINJUKU STATION - DAY

Taki hides in the shade while checking his location on his

phone’s GPS. It reads, “SHINJUKU STATION”.

He puts the phone in his pocket and walks to the main street
and into the sunlight, blinding him. The noisy crowds grow
louder and Taki joins the mass of commuters.

Taki stares at the skyline, amazed. He unconsciously twirls

a lock of hair by his ear and smiles.

TAKI 20:43
[GASPS, then CHUCKLES LIGHTLY] I’m in Tokyo!

EXT. JINGU HIGH SCHOOL - LATER

A very industrial yet modern-looking school in the middle of

the city. The architectural design fits the high-end
corporate buildings surrounding it.

CLASSROOM

We overhear some chatter from random students during their

lunch break.

Two girls in desks next to each other.

GIRL 1 20:55
Where did you get this?

GIRL 2 20:56
Daikanyama.

A group of guys eating fast food.

GUY 1 20:57
Guess who’s opening at our next gig…

GUY 2 20:58
What?

A girl and guy munching on snacks.

GIRL 20:59
Hey, let’s skip club stuff today and catch a
movie.

Taki shyly peers into the classroom, unsure if it’s the

right one.

TAKI 21:05
Uhh...

A few students in the halls glace suspiciously at Taki.

TSUKASA FUJII (17), the sexy intellectual who sent Taki the
text, comes up behind him and throws an arm over his
shoulder.

Taki shrinks away, scared.

TSUKASA 21:07
Taki!

TAKI 21:07
[GASPS from fear]
Tsukasa is very close to Taki (Mitsuha).

TSUKASA 21:10 (CONT'D)

Can’t believe you got in at
noon. Come on, let’s grab
lunch!

With his arm still around Taki, Tsukasa guides him

through the hallways. Taki blushes and shrinks even
smaller.

TSUKASA 21:14 (CONT'D)

You ignored my text, too.

TAKI 21:16
Oh, Mr. Tsukasa?

TSUKASA 21:18
Mister? You don’t have to go that far.

ROOFTOP - MOMENTS LATER

A basketball court on the school’s roof surrounded by a

tall chain-linked fence. A few students play on the court.

Taki and Tsukasa eat with another one of Taki’s

friends, SHINTA TAKAGI (17), a happy, go-lucky, pudgy
boy, by the court in the shade.

TAKI 21:21 (O.C.)

Uhh...
SHINTA 21:22
You got lost...?

TAKI 21:23
Yeah.

SHINTA 21:24
Wait a second, how’d you wind up
getting lost on the way to
school?

TAKI 21:28
Uh... well... a girl -
SHINTA 21:31
A girl?

TAKI 21:32
(scared) Uh, a gal.

Shinta and Tsukasa give Taki a confused look.

SHINTA 21:33 TSUKASA 21:33

Hm? Hm?

Shinta and Tsukasa both lean in closer, even more confused.

TAKI 21:34
(scared) I mean…

SHINTA 21:34 TSUKASA 21:34

Huh? Huh?

TAKI 21:35
A guy!

The two friends nod in. unison. Taki sighs, relieved.

SHINTA 21:37 TSUKASA 21:37

Hm! Hm!

TAKI 21:39 (CONT'D)

You know, guys just wanna
have fun! Every day’s a
festival when you’re livin’
in Tokyo. As a guy.

SHINTA 21:44
Hey, you sound funny.

TAKI 21:47
[GASPS]

TSUKASA 21:47
And where’s your lunch?

Taki panics.

TAKI 21:48
Uh --
TSUKASA 21:49
Seriously?

SHINTA 21:51
What is up with you?
TSUKASA 21:52
We can share somethin’.

SHINTA 23:53
Let’s make a croquette-egg sandwich.

Taki’s friends combine portions of their lunches to make a

small sandwich for Taki.

BASKETBALL PLAYER 21:55 (O.S.)

Yes! Ha, ha!

TAKI 21:58
Uh...Thank you.
Shinta and Tsukasa give big smiles.

SHINTA 22:01
[CHUCKLES] Wanna hit the café later?

TSUKASA 22:04
Oh, that one? Sure. You in, Taki?

TAKI 22:07
What?... What?... What?!

Taki inches closer to the boys.

TAKI (CONT’D) 22:10

A cafe?!

INT. CAFE - DAY

Very hipster and Earthy architecture. People sit in

their fancy, woven seats and eat photogenic food.

Shinta and Tsukasa study the ceiling and the wooden

beams while Taki indecisively flips through the menu.

SHINTA 22:15
They’ve got nice timberwork in here.
TSUKASA 22:17
Yeah, it’s pretty intricate.
(to Taki) Taki, all set?

TAKI 22:20
Uh! Uhh...

Taki sees the prices for the first time.

TAKI 22:22
[GASPS] I could live for a whole
month on what these pancakes
cost!

TSUKASA 22:27
Uh, maybe a decade ago.

TAKI 22:29
Hmm. Oh, well. It is a dream.

His friends study him, confused by his weird comment.

CUT TO:

CAFE - MOMENTS LATER

POV of Taki taking a photo of a fancy pancake dessert.

A FLASH.

The desert is gone. Taki sips a coffee.

TAKI 22:37
[SIGHS] Dreams are great.

His friends stare at him, confused. Taki’s phone chimes.

TAKI 22:42
Huh?
TAKI 22:46
[GASPS] What? Oh, no! I think
that I’m late for work!

SHINTA 22:50
You’ve got a shift today?

TSUKASA 22:52
Guess you’d better get going.

Taki nods and stands. He stops.

TAKI 22:53
Uh, right. (Beat) Uh, sorry, but uh --

SHINTA 22:58 TSUKASA 22:58

Huh? Huh?

TAKI 22:59 (CONT)

Where exactly do I work?

SHINTA 23:02 TSUKASA 23:02

Wha...? Wha...?

INT. DINING AREA - LATER

A sleazy looking man (late 20s), stylish light hair and a

patchy beard, sips wine.
SLEAZY MAN 23:39
Waiter. Hey, you!

Taki walks by with a tray of water.

TAKI 23:40
Uh, yes?

SLEAZY MAN 23:44

See this? Does it look right? A
toothpick’s in it.

TAKI 23:47
Uhh…

SLEAZY MAN 23:48

What would’ve happened if we ate
it? It’s really lucky I noticed
when I did. Do something.

The sleaze-ball is sitting with his friend, also late

20s, gangster-looking with piercings and a shaved head.

TAKI 23:55
Uh... it’ just that - well, I
don’t even think we have
toothpicks at this --

SLEAZY MAN 24:01

--What?!

The sleazy man kicks the table, causing a loud

ruckus. Everyone in the restaurant stops and looks.

Another waitress, MIKI OKUDERA (24), a motherly girl

who’s aware of her beauty, yet doesn’t show it, comes to
placate the situation.

OKUDERA 24:04
Excuse me.

She gently butts Taki aside.

OKUDERA 24:06 (CONT'D)

Is everything all right over here?

SLEAZY MAN 24:07

Well...
OKUDERA 24:09
(whispers to Taki)
I’ll handle this.

Another older waiter pulls Taki away.

WAITER 1 24:11
What’s wrong with you today?

They watch Okudera handle the situation.

OKUDERA 24:14
We truly apologize. Your meal is
on the house tonight.

SLEAZY MAN 24:17

Why, thank you.

He secretly pulls a retractable blade from his pocket.

OKUDERA 24:19
You weren’t hurt, were you?

INT. RESTAURANT - LATER

After closing, the staff cleans up the place-- vacuuming,

stacking chairs, washing dishes.

Vacuuming behind Okudera, who is wiping down tables,

Taki works up the courage to thank her.

TAKI 24:32
Uh... Okudera...

Another waiter walks by Taki and knocks his head lightly.

WAITER 1 24:34
That’s “Miss” to you.

He walks away and Taki steps closer to Okudera.

TAKI 24:35
Miss Okudera. About before -

OKUDERA 24:38
(cheerful, overlapping)
We just had some bad luck is all.
TAKI 24:40
No, I -

OKUDERA 24:40
Those guys were definitely
scamming us. I handled it
according to the manual, but
still...

A waitress walks by with a checklist.

WAITRESS 24:47
Miss Okudera, your skirt!
We see a slash through her skirt, showing her pantyhose.
A few staff come to see what’s happening.

WAITRESS 24:15 (CONT'D)

Are you all right?

WAITER 1 24:52
Did something happen?

WAITRESS 24:53
Looks like someone cut it.

OKUDERA 24:55
That guy.

WAITRESS 24:56
What now? Do you remember what he looked like?

WAITER 1 24:57
No.

Taki, determined, grabs Okudera’s hand and pulls her away.

TAKI 24:59
Come with me.

OKUDERA 25:00
Huh?

WAITER 25:02
Hey, Taki!

The staff watch as Taki takes Okudera to the back of the

restaurant.
OFFICE - CONTINUOUS
A tight space with a table and chair. A computer sits,
surrounded by paperwork, post-its, and files.

TAKI 25:05
Okay, take off your skirt!

OKUDERA 25:06
What?!

TAKI 25:07
(Stammering) Wha-I’ll-I’ll look
the other way!

CUT TO:

LATER

Taki is sewing Okudera’s skirt with some excellent

needlework. His delicate hands weave green thread through
the black attire.

Okudera watches, surprised, with a towel around her waist.

TAKI 25:13
Hold on. This won’t take long.

A small pair of scissors snip a yellow thread, revealing a

very cute and childish design of a grass field, hedgehog,
and butterflies. The tear has been covered beneath the art.

TAKI 25:19 (CONT'D)

All done! Ta-da!

OKUDERA 25:21
Hm! You’re really good, Taki!
It’s way cuter now!

TAKI 25:25
(Giggles, blushes). By the
way, I wanted to thank you
for all your help with that
customer earlier.

OKUDERA 25:32
To be honest, well, I was
worried about you.

She points to her cheek, referring to Taki’s bandage.

OKUDERA 25:36(CONT'D)
You aren’t that strong, but
you’re quick to pick a fight.

TAKI 25:38
[GASPS LIGHTLY]

OKUDERA 25:39
Heh. I like you better today.
You’ve got a feminine side. Who
would’a guessed?

INT. SUBWAY - NIGHT

Taki studies the route home.

Taki puts the phone away and looks out the window. He
stares at his own reflection in the window.

TAKI 25:57(V.O.)
I gotta say, this dream sure does feel real.

INT. TAKI'S ROOM - LATER

Taki lays in his bed, still in his school uniform.

He scrolls through his phone.

TAKI 26:04 (CONT'D)

(to himself)
Ah, looks like he keeps a journal.

He looks through the dates.

TAKI 26:10 (CONT'D)

Hm. So organized.

Taki moves on to the photos. We see a picture of Tsukasa and

Shinta posing in front of some hamburgers.

TAKI 26:13 (CONT'D)

I wish I lived in Tokyo.

He scrolls through photos of Tsukasa and Shinta, food,

and the Tokyo skyline.

Taki finds a photo of Okudera, her back towards the camera,

unaware of the photo. She is dressed in her waitress
uniform, bright sunlight floods the Italian restaurant.
TAKI 26:20 (CONT'D)
Oh! One of her!

Beat.

Taki scrolls to the next picture: Okudera waves to the

camera, smiling as she cleans the restaurant windows.

TAKI 26:26 (CONT'D)

Unrequited love? Hm!

He giggles and sits up.

Taki types an entry into the phone diary. The last line
reads:

“WALKED TO THE STATION WITH MISS OKUDERA AFTER WORK,

THANKS TO MY FEMININE POWERS!”

TSUKASA 27:28
(teasing)
Ha! Do you remember where to go?

TAKI 27:30
Huh? Ugh - Wait a second, was that you
Tsukasa? Are you the one that’s been
messin’ with my phone?
TSUKASA 27:35
Huh?

TAKI 27:35
Uh... Never mind. Later.

Taki leaves his friends who are still eating.

SHINTA 27:40
Well, he’s back to normal.

TSUKASA 27:43
I think he was kinda...cute yesterday.

SHINTA 27:45
Uhh...

INT. RESTAURANT - DAY

Taki exits the staff room, putting on his bow tie. He

[GASPS] What’s up?

WAITER 1 27:51
Don’t play dumb! What about bro code, huh?

WAITER 2 27:52
Yeah, you walked home with her yesterday, right?

Taki understands, but doesn’t believe, what they’re

saying. He stutters, turning red.

TAKI 27:55
Uh...What’re you talking about? Me and Miss
Okudera?

The three waiters surround him.

WAITERS 28:00(IN UNISON)

So what did you guys do?

TAKI 28:02
Uh, well, I don’t remember actually.
WAITER 1 28:05
Quit messin’ around and tell us!

A door opens and Okudera struts in like a runway model. Her

fashionable attire really sells the smile.

OKUDERA 28:07
Okudera, reporting for duty!

She walks past all the guys.

OKUDERA 28:11
Don’t slack off today, you guys.

WAITER 1 28:12 WAITER 2 28:12

Yeah Yeah.

The three waiters and Taki gawk at her, cheeks flushed.

We’re gonna have a good day today.

Before she enters the women’s changing room, she turns

back towards Taki.

OKUDERA 28:16 (CONT'D)

Aren’t we, Taki?

She winks at him and leaves. The waiters scowl jealously.

INT. MITSUHA'S BEDROOM - DAY

Mitsuha, having just woken up, stares at her palm.

MITSUHA 28:26
Hmm?
Words scribbled in black marker from her palm to her
elbow that reads:

“MITSUHA? WHO ARE YOU? WHAT ARE YOU?”

Yotsuha slides open the door to Mitsuha’s room.

YOTSUHA 28:31
I see you’re not touching
your boobies today.

(suddenly aggressive)
Breakfast time! Hurry up!

Yotsuha slams the door shut. Beat.

Mitsuha clutches her chest, red.

MITSUHA 28:41
(Embarrassed) My boobs?!

CUT TO:

INT. ITOMORI - CLASSROOM - DAY

The teacher hasn’t arrived yet. All the students hang around
in their friend groups. Mitsuha enters her classroom. Her
hair is tied intricately with the braided cord, indicating
that she is herself today.

MITSUHA 28:44 (O.S.)

Mornin’.

The entire class turns their heads in unison and watches

her. Mitsuha pauses by the door, unsure what’s happening.

Murmurs spread through the students. Everyone’s eyes

are trained on her as she walks to her seat in the
back.

Mitsuha sits next to Sayaka.

MITSUHA 28:51 (CONT'D)

(timidly)
I feel like everyone’s starin’ at
me for some reason.

SAYAKA 28:55
Well, ya did kinda make a
scene yesterday.

MITSUHA 28:57
Uhh?

CUT TO:
INT. ITOMORI - ART CLASS - DAY

Sketches are hung on the wall. Porcelain busts and prop

fruit are strewn around the room. The chalkboard reads
“STILL-LIFE DRAWING”

All the kids sit behind easels in groups sketching an

object in the center.

Mitsuha and Sayaka, off in the back corner of the room,

have a wine bottle and a basket of fruit in front of them.
Kazuya and his harem, part of their group, draw with them.

Mitsuha’s hair is in a simple ponytail-- indicating that

it’s actually Taki.

HANA 29:01
(whisper)
Didja see all the election posters?

KAZUYA 29:03
Doesn’t matter who wins,
nothin’ll change. Except for who
gets the gift bag.

HANA 29:06
Shh! Somebody’s daddy’s depends
on it.

We see Mitsuha’s drawing.

A very detailed sketch of the architecture and cityscape of
Itomori. She shades in the fine details.
Sayaka, overhearing Kazuya and Hana’s conversation, looks
concerningly at Mitsuha.

MITSUHA 29:11
They’re talking about me, right?

SAYAKA 29:13
Uh...mm-hmm...

Mitsuha puts down her pencil.

SAYAKA 29:15(CONT'D)
Wait-- Mitsuha?

Mitsuha kicks an empty desk, knocking it over with a loud

crack.

Kazuya, Hana, and Sakura recoil in fear-- the whole

class looks scared.

Mitsuha crosses her legs and stares coldly at the three of

them. A small, proud smile spreads across her face.

CUT TO:

EXT. ITOMORI - SCHOOL FIELD - BACK TO PRESENT

Mitsuha, Sayaka, and Teshi eat lunch in their usual spot.

MITSUHA 29:27

CUT TO:

INT. MITSUHA’S HOUSE - AFTERNOON

Mitsuha rushes in. Yotsuha and Hitoha drink tea. Mitsuha

doesn’t greet them-- she rushes to her room.

YOTSUHA 29:34
Mitsuha?

FASTER PACE - QUICKER CUTS!

MITSUHA'S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Mitsuha flips through her notebook, growing more panicked at

each page. She finds notes and messages not written by her.
A message reads, “WHAT IS THIS LIFE?” along with sketches
of the torii gate outside Miyamizu Shrine.

MITSUHA 29:38
Huh...huh?!

MITSUHA 29:42 (CONT’D)

If their names are COLORED then they have switched bodies.

--TIMELAPSE of Miyamizu Shrine’s TORII GATE.

--TIMELAPSE of Tokyo’s tall buildings and traffic lights.

--Taki and Mitsuha waking up in a daze; Mitsuha (Taki)
trying to resist touching Mitsuha’s boobs. Taki (Mitsuha)
trying to stay calm while curious about his penis.
--Yotsuha opens the door to Mitsuha’s room to find Mitsuha
massaging her boobs.

--The two successfully use the bathroom.

--Taki runs to the subway station. He is pressed against the

subway door in the crowded train.

MITSUHA 30:32(V.O.)
I’m slowly beginnin’ to get
what’s goin’ on. Taki’s in high
school and livin’ in Tokyo.

--Mitsuha ties her hair in a ponytail in front of a mirror.

TAKI 30:39(V.O.)
Two or three times a week, I’ll
suddenly and randomly switch with
Mitsuha, who’s somewhere out in
the boonies.

--Mitsuha and Yotsuha head to school.

--Mitsuha writes notes on the phenomenon during class in her

notebook. CU of her notebook that reads, “CONDITION: SLEEP?
CAUSE: UNKNOWN”.

TAKI 30:45(V.O.)
The trigger is sleep. The cause
is unknown.

--Mitsuha, in her fancy red bow and hair style, stands

But there’s no doubt that
we’re switching places.

--The waiters confront Taki.

TAKI 30:57 (V.O.)
The reactions of everyone around
us prove it.

--Taki types into his phone.

TAKI 31:00 (V.O.)

That’s why -
--Mitsuha types into her phone.

MITSUHA 31:00(V.O.)
That’s why we decided to lay
out some rules so we could
protect each other’s way of
life.

--We see phone notes from Mitsuha that read: “NO BATHS! NO
LOOKING! NO TOUCHING!”

--Phone notes from Taki read, “DON’T WASTE MONEY! NO

DIALECT! DON’T BE LATE!”

MITSUHA 31:06(V.O.)
Things to watch out for during
the switches, and a list of stuff
we should never do.

--Taki sits squished between two guys on a subway, typing on

his phone.

TAKI 31:11(V.O.)
We also agreed to leave reports
on our phones on the days we
switch places.

--Mitsuha, by the railway, typing on her phone.

MITSUHA 31:16(V.O.)
So that we can work together to
get through this weird thing
that’s happening.

--Mitsuha looks through the messages Taki left behind.

MITSUHA 31:21(V.O.)
And yet...

TAKI 31:22 (V.O.)

And yet...
MITSUHA 31:24 TAKI 31:24
I cannot believe this I cannot believe this

--With the song at its chorus, we’ve come full circle.

Taki and Mitsuha wake up again in each other’s bodies;

home from school. Taki blushes.

--Mitsuha and Sayaka ride Teshi’s bike as he chases behind

them.

--Mitsuha plays basketball in school during P.E.

She absolutely wrecks the girls guarding her and
scores.

MCU of Mitsuha’s boobs as anime jiggle physics do their

thing. The boys in the bleachers stare with wide eyes and
red faces.

--Mitsuha sits with Sayaka during a break between

classes. Her legs are wide apart, the skirt doing its
best to cover up.

MITSUHA 31:40
Guys’ll stare. Watch the skirt!
These are basics for a girl!

--Taki takes pictures of the food he’s eating. Of ALL

the food he’s eating. Plates after plates.

TAKI (V.O.) 31:49

Stop wasting my money on sweets!

MITSUHA (V.O.) 31:50

It’s goin’ in your body.
Plus, I also work for that
money.

Their tone and speech with each other has become more casual
as they get to know each other more.

--Taki figures out which order goes to which table at the

restaurant.
--Mitsuha complains to Hitoha and Yotsuha as they
braid cords. Mitsuha has no idea what she’s doing.

TAKI (V.O.) 31:54

Braiding cords is impossible!

MITSUHA (V.O.) 31:56

You work way too many shifts!

TAKI (V.O.) 31:50

Cause you keep wasting money!

--Taki apologizes to a chef for messing up an order.

--TIMELAPSE of Itomori’s scenery, Tokyo’s concrete jungle.

--Mitsuha saws logs in half while Teshi holds them down.

--Mitsuha presents a humble, log picnic table complete with

an umbrella for shade, by the old vending machine, to
Sayaka.

--Taki and Okudera walk home on a large bridge over a wide,

busy street. They laugh and talk like best friends.

--Taki and Okudera sit side by side at a coffee shop. Their

heads huddle as Okudera shows him something on her phone.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 32:19

Had tea with Miss Okudera on
the way home. You two have a
good thing goin’!

--Taki angrily reads the message on the subway.

TAKI (V.O.) 32:24

Quit messing with my
relationships, Mitsuha!

--Mitsuha, Sayaka, and Teshi walk home. Three girls from

their school catch up to them, out of breath. The girl in
the middle hands a love letter to Mitsuha.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 32:28

Hey Taki, why’s a girl
confessin’ her love to me?

--Mitsuha gets another love confession from a male

classmate. Sayaka and Teshi watch from the shadows. Mitsuha
takes the love letter, bored.
TAKI (V.O.) 32:31
Maybe you’re just more popular when I’m you.

--Taki wakes up with large words written on his arm.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 32:34

You’re so full of yourself! Like
you have a girlfriend.

TAKI (V.O.) 32:37

It’s not like you have anyone either!

--Mitsuha writes “IDIOT” on her cheek with a marker.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 32:38

INT. MITSUHA'S BEDROOM - DAY

Mitsuha (Taki) groggily wakes up. She reaches for her

breast, but pauses.

MITSUHA 33:04
I shouldn’t for her sake.
HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

Yotsuha opens Mitsuha’s door. We see Mitsuha touching her

breasts. Beat.
YOTSUHA 33:10
You sure do like your own
boobies. Time to go! Get ready!
She slides the door closed.

LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

On TV, a reporter talks about the up-coming comet,

Tiamat, with a meteorologist.

REPORTER 33:17
Over the course of the last few
days, the Tiamat comet has been
visible. But when and where can
people see it?

METEOROLOGIST 33:24
The Tiamat comet will be moving
in the same direction the sun
does, from east to west from our
point of view. So right after
sunset.

The meteorologist points to a diagram on screen showing the

trajectory.

Mitsuha finally arrives, dressed for school, and sees

Yotsuha and Hitoha sipping tea, waiting.

YOTSUHA 33:32
Why’re you wearing your uniform?

MITSUHA 33:34
Huh?
EXT. ITOMORI - DAY

A secluded trail leading up to the mountains. A calm

stream flows alongside the footpath, and beautiful,
orange leaves flow down the water. The surrounding trees
have all turned orange and red for the fall season.

Mitsuha, Yotsuha, and Hitoha walk along the path, shaded

by the thick foliage.

YOTSUHA 33:42
Grandma? Why does our shrine
god’s relic have to be kept so
far awaaaay?

HITOHA 33:48
‘Cause of Mayugoro, I don't really know.
Mitsuha whispers to Yotsuha.

MITSUHA 33:51
Who’s Mayugoro?

YOTSUHA 33:52
What? He’s famous!

Beat.

Mitsuha and Yotsuha walk a few paces behind Hitoha. The old
woman walks with a cane and a hand behind her back. Mitsuha
catches up with Hitoha and gives her a piggyback ride.
MITSUHA 34:04
Hop on, grandma.

HITOHA 34:09
Oh!

YOTSUHA 34:09
[CROSS] Watch Out! Careful!
ITOMORI FOREST - LATER

Mitsuha (Taki) sweats from carrying her grandma uphill.

We see Itomori’s lake in its entirety.

HITOHA 34:22
Mitsuha, Yotsuha, do you
know about “Musubi”?

MITSUHA 34:27
Musubi?

HITOHA 34:28
It’s what we used to call the
local guardian deity long ago,and
it means “union”. This word has
profound meanin’. Tyin’ strings
together is a union. Connectin’ to
people is a union. And the flow of
time is a union.

As they ascend in elevation, the forest around them changes.

All the orange and red trees are gone, and we are left with
tall evergreens with trunks as big as sequoias.

SHIMENAWA, thick rope made of hemp to ward spirits of the

Shinto religion, are tied to the trunks.
HITOHA (CONT'D) 34:46
These are all part of the god’s
power. The braided cords that we
make are tied to that. A skill
from the god, they represent the
flow of time itself. [BEAT]

They assemble and take shape.

They twist, tangle, unravel now
and then, break, and reconnect.

They continue walking up the mountain, sunlight shining

through gaps in the canopy.

HITOHA (CONT'D) 35:09

That’s what a union is. What time is.
MOUNTAINSIDE - LATER

The three break under a tree. Hitoha pours Mitsuha a

drink from her thermos.

HITOHA 35:16
Have a drink.
Mitsuha 35:17
[OUT OF BREATH] Thanks.

YOTSUHA 35:19
I want some, too!

HITOHA 35:20
That’s also a union. [CHUCKLES]

Mitsuha hands Yotsuha her cup.

HITOHA (CONT'D) 35:24

Whether it be water, rice, or
saké, when somethin’ becomes a
part of a person, it’s a union,
it joins their soul. Which is why
the offerin’ we’re makin’ today is
such an important custom. It
connects the god with people.

MOUNTAINTOP - LATER

We are above the clouds. There are no trees in sight, only a

few grasses and flowers between the rocks. The three are
dwarfed by the size of the mountain.

Yotsuha, the first to look over the top, excitedly

slides down the other side.
YOTSUHA 35:42
[GASPS] Hey, I can see it!
Mitsuha, awestruck by the view, puts Hitoha down.

MITSUHA 35:46
[GASPS, to herself]
This is where it is. The
sacred relic, of Miyamizu
Shrine.

ELS of the mountain. A huge CRATER lies at the very top,

creating a basin. It’s not deep like a volcano, but
shallow and wide.

As the camera pulls back to get a full view of the basin,

Mitsuha, Yotsuha, and Hitoha grow smaller and smaller
until they disappear from view.

Grass and ponds cover inside the basin with a lone tree
at the center. Beneath the tree, a small cave structure
pokes out.

The three stop by a stream that surrounds the entrance.

HITOHA 36:08
What lies ahead is the
hereafter.

Yotsuha happily hops across the stream, using rocks as

stepping stones.

YOTSUHA 36:11
Huh?
HITOHA 36:12
It’s the netherworld.

HITOHA 36:15
[GIGGLES] The netherworld!

Mitsuha steps in the water to help Hitoha move from rock to

rock.

HITOHA 36:20
In order to return to this
world, you have to leave behind
what is most important to you.

MITSUHA 36:27
Huh?

HITOHA 36:28
[CHUCKLES] Like the kuchikamizake.

MITSUHA 36:32
Kuchikamizake?

Hitoha hands Mitsuha a small porcelain jar tied with a

red bow.

The real Mitsuha’s kuchikamizake.

HITOHA 36:25
You’ll offer it at the foot of
the shrine god’s relic. After
all, it’s half of you.

Mitsuha studies it.

MITSUHA (V.O.)36:43
Half...of Mitsuha...

We see them enter the cave, a giant boulder propped up on

smaller rocks.

ITOMORI FOREST - - GOLDEN HOUR

The three make their way down the mountain. A flock of

finches flee from the brush as they walk by. Mitsuha and
Yotsuha watch them fly, overlooking the town.

YOTSUHA 36:59
[GIGGLES]

YOTSUHA 37:03
Wow! It’s already magic hour!

MITSUHA 37:06
Hm? Magic hour?

Mitsuha looks down at the lake.

MITSUHA 37:11
[GASPS SLIGHTLY TO SELF]
Evening mist clouds the surrounding buildings.

Sunlight bounces off the lake and fog, creating a beautiful

shimmering effect.

The town’s lights turn on. Beat. Hitoha studies Mitsuha.

YOTSUHA 37:18
Oh yeah! Maybe I can see the comet.

MITSUHA 37:21
Huh? The comet?

HITOHA 37:25
Oh? Mitsuha... you’re dreaming
right now... aren’t you?

SMASH CUT TO:

INT. TAKI’S ROOM - DAY

TAKI 37:31
[GASPS WITH A START, BREATHING HEAVILY]

He sits up. Tears roll down his cheeks. Beat.

TAKI 37:42
I’m crying? But why?

Someone texts his phone.

It’s Okudera. The message reads, “I’M ALMOST THERE. LOOKING

FORWARD TO IT!” With a little heart emoji.

TAKI (CONT'D) 37:50

Miss Okudera? She’s almost
where? Uh! Oh, Mitsuha what did
you do?

He opens his phone diary.

TAKI (CONT'D) 37:59

Date?!
EXT. TAKI'S APARTMENT - DAY

The tone of this sequence isn’t particularly happy. It’s

more of a pensive sadness with a smidge of nostalgia.
TAKI 38:00
[PANTING AS HE BOLTS OUT OF APT]

Taki bursts out his apartment door and runs to their meetup
spot. He’s dressed in a nice blazer and khakis.

Mitsuha’s ribbon is tied around his right wrist.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 38:07

Tomorrow’s your Tokyo date with
Miss Okudera! Meet up at the
station at 10:30!

CUT TO:

but...

CUT TO:

EXT. STATION - DAY

Taki, out of breath, waits for Okudera.

TAKI 38:22
[PANTING, OUT OF BREATH, THEN
PANTING AGAIN.]

Pedestrians move back and forth as Taki looks for her.

Okudera appears behind him.

OKUDERA 38:31
(sing-song) Hi, Taki.

TAKI 38:32
Huh? Agh--

OKUDERA (CONT'D) 38:34

[GIGGLES] Wait long?

TAKI 38:36
Yeah. Uh, no. Uh...[GASPS]
Taki touches his face, and we see Mitsuha’s braided cord

clearly. Beat.

Taki takes a good look at Okudera, beautiful under her cute

sunhat. She smiles at Taki.

OKUDERA 38:47
[GIGGLES]

TAKI (CONT'D) 38:48

I just got here.

OKUDERA 38:49
Thank goodness. Let’s go.

Okudera grabs Taki’s hand and pulls him off.

CUT TO:

INT. MITSUHA'S BEDROOM - DAY

Mitsuha, in her school uniform, ties her hair up in front of

the mirror.

Camera straight on her back, Mitsuha’s body covers

her reflection.

MITSUHA 38:54
(melancholy)
Must be nice. They’ve
probably met up about now...

We see the braided cord as Mitsuha uses it to tie her hair.

MITSUHA (CONT'D) 39:02

Huh?

The camera dollies to the side, revealing Mitsuha’s face

in the mirror.

Tears stream down her cheeks.

MITSUHA (CONT'D) 39:06

[LIGHT GASP] Why am I…? Why?
CUT TO:

INT. TOKYO SKYTREE - ELEVATOR - DAY

A crowded elevator at the popular sight-seeing location.

Okudera leans against the glass window in the back,

while Taki, desperately trying not to get too close to
Okudera, leans over her.

SKYTREE - MOMENTS LATER

Okudera marvels at the view, Taki follows closely behind.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 39:16

It was a date I wanted to go on,
but if it so happens that you end
up goin’, you’d better be grateful
and enjoy it!

SKYTREE RESTAURANT - LATER

Taki and Mitsuha eat lunch together. Okudera converses

easily. Taki, still shy, listens and laughs.

OKUDERA (V.O.) 39:24

This is nice. It’s my first time here. So is this
one of your usual go-to spots, Taki?

MITSUHA (V.O.) 39:29

[CROSS W/ OKUDERA]
At any rate, I bet you’ve never
even been on a single date.

TAKI 39:31
[CROSS W/MITSUHA]
Huh? [BEAT] No way, it’s too
expensive!

OKUDERA 39:34
Uh...[LIGHT AWKWARD GIGGLE]

MUSEUM - LATER

Taki sulks by a directory, alone.

TAKI 39:35
I don’t know what to say to her.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 39:37

That’s why I’ve hand-picked some
links below to help you out, ya
wallflower.

BATHROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Taki reads Mitsuha’s notes by the sink.

TAKI 39:42
For real?

Mitsuha’s links read, “YOU TOO, CAN GET A GIRLFRIEND”,

“DESPITE SOCIAL ANXIETY, I GOT A GIRL!”, and “THE DO’S AND
DON’TS OF TEXTING”.

TAKI (CONT'D) 39:49

[GROWLS] She’s making fun of me.

MUSEUM GALLERY - LATER

Taki and Okudera look around a small collection of images

and art.
A large sign reads, “PHOTO EXHIBITION: NOSTALGIA”.

A series of black and white photographs, hung ornately,

depict the scenery of Itomori.

Taki stops and stares at the image of Lake Itomori. Beat.

TAKI 40:03, 40:13

[GASPS LIGHTLY]

Okudera’s face softens as she studies Taki. She walks

close to Taki and talks quietly in his ear.

OKUDERA 40:21
You know something, Taki?
Today you’re...you’re like a
different person.

Taki watches her walk away.

EXT. TOKYO - BRIDGE - GOLDEN HOUR

Taki and Okudera arrive at the same large bridge they

always walk across on their way home. Cars pass.

TAKI 40:37
Um, Miss Okudera, you getting
hungry? We could get dinner.

OKUDERA 40:42
Uh. Let’s call it a day.

TAKI 40:46
Oh-- alright...

They stop in the middle of the bridge.

OKUDERA 40:48
I could be wrong, and I’m sorry
if I am.

TAKI 40:51
About?

OKUDERA 40:53
But you used to have a little
crush on me, am I right?

Taki grabs at words, but to no avail.

TAKI 40:56
[GRIMACE GASPS] Uh!
OKUDERA (CONT'D) 40:58
But right now, there’s someone
else you like, hm?

TAKI 41:00
[SCOFFS] N-No! Uh... it’s not that.

OKUDERA 41:04
Really?

TAKI 41:05
There’s no one. It’s not like that.

His cheeks give him away.

OKUDERA 41:08
Are you sure about that?

TAKI 41:09
[CROSS, STAMMERS AWKWARDLY]

Okudera steps closer. Taki avoids eye contact.

OKUDERA (CONT'D) 41:11

Well, thanks for today!
TAKI 41:13
Huh?

OKUDERA 41:14
See you at work.

Okudera walks off, leaving Taki on the bridge. Beat.

BRIDGE - LATER

Taki, still on the bridge, looks through Mitsuha’s messages.

TAKI 41:30
By the time the date’s over...

TAKI (CONT'D) 41:32 MITSUHA (V.O.)41:32

...you should be able to ...you should be able to
see the comet in the sky. see the comet in the sky.

Taki looks up at the sky. It’s empty.

TAKI (CONT'D) 41:38

What does she mean? Weirdo.

He taps on Mitsuha’s contact on his phone, and her number

pops up. Beat.
He calls her.

We hear a soft ring as his phone dials.

INT. MITSUHA'S BEDROOM - DAY

Mitsuha’s phone rings. She answers lethargically.

The camera avoids her face. It dances around her, focusing

on other parts of the room.

MITSUHA 42:08
(melancholy)
Oh. [BEAT, TESHI RESPONDS].

It’s you, Teshi.

[BEAT, TESHI RESPONDS]

No, I just didn't feel like goin’,

that’s all. I’m fine.
[BEAT, TESHI RESPONDS]

What? The festival? Oh... Oh,

yeah, the comet. It’ll be at its
brightest today, right? Okay, got
it. See you later.

EXT. ITOMORI - NIGHT

Shops are lined up selling snacks, and sparklers. Families

walk around enjoying the event. Some women wear yukatas.

VENDING MACHINE - SAME TIME

Sayaka and Teshi wait at the wooden picnic table.

SAYAKA 42:34
You’re just lookin’ forward
to seein’ Mitsuha in a
yukata, arent’cha?

Teshi almost chokes on his drink.

TESHI 42:37
I--I am not! I mean, it didn’t
even... cross my mind

SAYAKA 42:41
[KNOWINGLY] Hmmm...

TESHI (CONT'D) 42:42

Y’know, she sounded kind of down
when I talked to her.

SAYAKA 42:46
Maybe she just didn’t want a call from
ya.

TESHI (CONT'D) 42:48

It’s not funny!

SAYAKA 42:49
[GIGGLES]

MITSUHA 42:49
[CROSS] Sorry to keep ya.
SAYAKA 42:50
Oh, she’s here!

TESHI 42:51
You’re late.

SAYAKA 41:51 TESHI 41:51

[GASPS] [GASPS]

They freeze. Shock spreads across their faces.

Teshi is speechless.

SAYAKA (CONT'D) 42:54

Mitsuha, what happened to--?

TESHI 42:54
[GASPING, CROSS AS SAYAKA TALKS,
THEN 42:58] Your hair!

The camera tilts up, showing Mitsuha in a pretty, blue

yukata and her new short hair.

Barely falling past her chin, her hair wraps around her
head. There is no braided cord in her hair.

Mitsuha looks sad.

MITSUHA 43:00
I guess...it’s weird.

ITOMORI - LATER

The three walk along a quiet road. Rice fields spread across
the land around them.

Mitsuha walks ahead, alone. Sayaka and Teshi follow a few

paces behind.

TESHI 43:12
(ASIDE TO SAYAKA) You think it’s
gotta do with some guy?
Like...he broke her heart?

SAYAKA 43:15
Guys always just assume that it
has to do with a boy. She said
she felt like cuttin’ it.

TESHI 43:21
Ya sure about that? You really
think she felt like cuttin’ off
that much of it?

MITSUHA (O.S.) 43:24

[GASPS]

SAYAKA 43:24 TESHI 43:24

Huh? Huh?

MITSUHA 43:25
Hey, guys! I can see it!

Mitsuha reaches the apex of the road. A small dirt path

diverges down the side of the mountain.

Mitsuha excitedly jogs down.

OPEN FIELD - CONTINUOUS

Mitsuha stares up at the open sky. Clouds in the distance.

Amongst the sea of stars, a large comet, blue in color with

a turquoise and magenta tail that stretches across the
entire sky.

Teshi and Sayaka catch up.

TESHI 43:45
Woah!

SAYAKA 43:46
[GASPS IN AWE]

A small piece of the comet breaks apart. It diverges from

the initial trajectory, growing red as it enters the Earth’s
atmosphere.

Mitsuha stares wide eyed.

MITSUHA 43:53

Huh? [GASPS W/ZOOM]

We zoom in on her eye, the comet reflecting in the iris.

CUT TO BLACK:
OVER BLACK.

An automated phone message.

OPERATOR 44:06
The number you are trying to
reach is currently outside the
cellular network, or has been
turned off due--

EXT. BRIDGE - NIGHT

Taki, phone by his ear, leans against the railing. He

is right where we last saw him. He hangs up.

TAKI (V.O.) 44:13

I’ll just have to tell her how
lousy the date ended up the next
time we switch. That’s what I
thought.

Taki walks off, crossing the bridge.

TAKI (V.O.) 44:21

But, for some reason, the switches
Mitsuha and I’d been going through
until now...they never happened
again.
INT. TAKI'S ROOM - NIGHT

Taki sketches what he remembers of Itomori’s scenery.

His walls are plastered with drawings of different
landmarks. Reference books of rural Japan lay open
beside him.

CUT TO:

INT. TOKYO - SCHOOL - DAY

Taki stares absentmindedly out the window during class.

Beat.

He works on an intricate landscape drawing of the

entire town.
EXT. TOKYO - SUNSET

Taki walks home with his friends. He stares at the sunset.

CUT TO:
INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT

Taki serves food to a couple.

CUT TO:

INT. TAKI'S ROOM - NIGHT

Taki sleeps at his desk, the finished Itomori drawing beside

him.

TAKI'S ROOM - THE NEXT DAY

Taki takes the drawings he did of Itomori’s landmarks, and

the drawing of the entire town, and stuffs them into his
backpack.

He wraps Mitsuha’s bracelet around his wrist.

INT. TRAIN STATION - DAY

Taki walks through the station, prepared for a long journey.

He runs into Okudera and Tsukasa waiting for him.

TAKI 46:23
(shocked)
Wha-- What’re--What’re you doing
here?

OKUDERA 46:29
[GIGGLES] Tsukasa told me about
it, so, here I am!

INT. TRAIN - DAY

The three sit together. Okudera takes the window seat, Taki
takes the aisle, and Tsukasa sits between them.
TAKI 46:37
(WHISPERING)
I asked for two things: To cover
my shift, and to back up my
alibi if my dad asked.

TSUKASA 46:42
Relax, Tagaki’s gonna take your
shift.

CU on Tsukasa's phone as he plays a video of Shinta.

SHINTA 46:44
Gotcha covered! But you owe me
dinner!

TAKI 46:47
[SCOFFS] So you’re all in on it.

TSUKASA 46:48
You’ve got everyone worried about you.

TAKI 46:49
Huh?

TSUKASA 46:51
We can’t ignore this. What if
somebody’s trying to pull one
over on you?
TAKI 46:54
Like catfish?

Okudera eats a pocky stick.

OKUDERA 46:55
I mean, you met this person
online, didn’t you?

TAKI 46:58
[CUTTING HER OFF] No, not exactly!
It’s...kinda complicated.

Okudera passes the pocky sticks around.

TSUKASA 47:00
(to Okudera)
Could be from a dating site.
TAKI 47:01
She’s not! Uh...

The other passengers glance over. The three quiet down.

TSUKASA 47:03
It’s because you’ve been
acting awfuly fishy lately. So,
we’re keeping an eye on you.

TAKI 47:07
I don’t need a babysitter, okay?

MONTAGE RURAL JAPAN

We cut through their journey as they search for Itomori.

...Out the window, the scenery zooms past.

TAKI (V.O.) 47:11

The switches stopped. My calls
never connected and texts never
went through. That’s why I
decided to go see Mitsuha in
person.

...SUBWAY STATION. Taki runs ahead while Okudera and Tsukasa

take their time. Taki pushes the two to walk faster like a
little kid.

...They get on a different train.

TAKI (TO O/T) 47:18
Can you pick up the pace?
We’re gonna miss it! C’mon!

TAKI (V.O., CROSS) 47:21

I wanted to see her. But...

...The three eat lunch on the train.

OKUDERA 47:26
What? You don’t know where she
is exactly? The town’s landscape
is your only clue?
TAKI 47:31
Yeah...
...They get off the train and walk around town.

OKUDERA 47:35
And you can’t contact her?
What’s that about?

TSUKASA 47:39
[SIGHS] Where are we?
You’re a terrible tour
guide.

TAKI 47:41
[CUTTING HIM OFF, PEEVED]
Cause I’m not one?!

OKUDERA 47:43
Oh well. Guess we’ll help you
search.

...A small shopping center at a train station. Taki studies

a map while Tsukasa and Okudera fawn over a cute, cow
mascot. Tsukasa takes pictures.

OKUDERA (CONT'D) 47:46

Aw, it’s so cute! Look, Taki!

TAKI 47:49
[GRUMBLES] Seriously, guys?.

OKUDERA 47:51
Ha! It moved! Aww![GIGGLES]

...Taki shows a taxi driver his drawing. The driver

doesn’t know.

...Torii gate steps. Okudera and Tsukasa play by the

gate. Taki asks some local housewives.

...They walk through some rice fields. Taki uses the GPS
on his phone.
...Taki shows some local farmers his drawing. Tsukasa and
Okudera play cards on a bench.

...Taki asks some shopkeepers. No one seems to know. Okudera

and Tsukasa eat ice cream.

...BUS. Tsukasa and Okudera nap on Taki’s shoulders, who

sits between them.

...BUS STOP. Taki hangs his head low, defeated.

TAKI 48:21
[SIGHS] This is a lost cause.

OKUDERA 48:23 TSUKASA 48:23

What?! What?

OKUDERA (CONT'D) 48:24

After everything that we’ve
done for you today?

TAKI 48:27
[SIGHS] You haven’t done
anything.

INT. TAKAYAMA RAMEN - LATE AFTERNOON

The three sit in the quiet and empty restaurant.

OKUDERA 48:35
One takayama ramen.

TSUKASA 48:37
One takayama ramen for me too.

TAKI 48:38
I...guess I’ll have the same.

The waitress, ATSUKO (60s), a middle-aged woman with a bandana

on her head takes their orders. She calls out to her husband,
NAKATA (60s), who is the chef in the back.

ATSUKO 48:40
Sure. [CALLING TO KITCHEN]
Three orders of ramen.

NAKATA (O.S.) 48:43

Got it.

The three finish their meal.

TAKI 48:46
Think we can make it back to Tokyo tonight?

Tsukasa pulls out his phone.

TSUKASA 48:48
Well, I think we’ll be cuttin’ it
close. Let me take a look.

TAKI 48:51
‘kay, thanks.

OKUDERA 48:52
Wait, Taki, you sure about that?

TAKI 48:56
Yeah. I kinda feel like maybe I’ve
been barking up the wrong tree this
whole time.

He looks at the drawing of Itomori again. Atsuko walks by

with a water pitcher.

ATSUKO 49:05
Hey. That’s a sketch of Itomori, isn’t
it?

The three glance up.

TAKI, OKUDERA, TSUKASA 49:10

[ALL GASP]
ATSUKO (CONT'D) 49:11
It’s drawn really well. (to Nakata)
Come take a look at this, hun!

The waitress shows the drawing to her husband.

NAKATA 49:15
Yeah, that’s Itomori. It takes me back.
ATSUKO 49:19
My husband was born and raised there, you know.

Taki’s eyes glow. Excitement grows.

TAKI 49:21
Itomori? [LIGHT GASP, BEAT] Yes, of course! That’s
the place! It’s nearby, right?

ATSUKO 49:29
You don’t...
NAKATA 49:31
Itomori was...

Realization spreads on Tsukasa and Okudera’s faces.

TSUKASA 49:32
Itomori? [GASPS] But that’s where...

OKUDERA 49:34
[CROSS w/TSUKASA] Wait!

OKUDERA CONT’D 49:36

Isn’t that the area where that comet--?
TAKI 49:38
Huh?

EXT. ITOMORI - SCHOOL - LATER

The screeching of birds. Caution tape flaps in the wind.

Cracked concrete, overgrown with weeds and vines, surround

the school.

Taki runs to the fence. He looks over the cliff down at

the town.
TAKI 49:58
[PANTING, OUT OF BREATH. BEAT.
THEN, 50:03 HORRIFIED GASP.]

Itomori is destroyed.

A huge crater, connected to Lake Itomori, rests where the

town once stood.

Water from the lake fills the new, smaller crater as crushed
buildings, bridges, and cars rot away, partially submerged.

Taki, Okudera, and Tsukasa stand in front of the dilapidated

school. Nakata from the ramen shop stands by his car, smoking
a cigarette.

OKUDERA 50:27
Hey, is this place really where she’s from?

TSUKASA 50:31
Now way. Taki must’ve just confused
this with somewhere else.
TAKI 50:34
No, I didn’t. This was the place.
This schoolyard. The mountains.
Even this high school here! I
remember it all!

TSUKASA 50:44
[SLIGHT NERVOUS LAUGHTER TO VOICE]
There’s no way you could. You’ve
gotta know about that disaster
three years ago, right? Hundreds
of people died.

TAKI 50:52
They died? Three years ago? It
can’t be. There’s no way.[GETTING
NERVOUS] I mean, I still have the
memos she wrote…

TAKI CONT’D 51:07

[GASPS, RUBS EYES AND GASPS AGAIN
AT 51:12, SHOCKED. HE CONTINUES TO
GASP AS HE LOOKS AT PHONE.]
Taki looks through his phone diary. Beat.

We see all the messages Mitsuha wrote disappear one by one,

as if being deleted.

TAKI (CONT'D) 51:22

They’re fading...

CU of Taki’s phone that reads “NO ENTRIES”.

INT/EXT. CAR - MOVING - NIGHT

Nakata drives and the three sit in silence.

TSUKASA (V.O.) 51:34

Comet Tiamat, with an orbital
period of 1,200 years, made a
close approach to Earth three
years ago in October.

INT. FURUKAWA CITY LIBRARY - NIGHT

A huge pile of books and articles sit on Taki’s desk. He

reads through them.
TSUKASA (V.O.) 51:43
Nobody could predict that its
nucleus would split at its perigee.

We see headlines “TOWN ANNIHILATED”, “OVER 500 DEAD OR

MISSING”, and “ITOMORI, THE TOWN THAT VANISHED.”

TSUKASA 51:53
The fragment that broke off of
it became a meteor that struck
Japan.

Taki searches through more articles on the internet.

OKUDERA 51:59
It looks like that day was
the same date as the autumn
festival.

Tsukasa shows Taki the reports and books.

TSUKASA 52:03
The point of impact was here. At
8:42 p.m., it fell right around
where people were gathered for
the festival.

Okudera pulls a book from the library shelf. Big and heavy.

The title reads, “NAMES OF THE VICTIMS”.

TSUKASA (CONT'D) 52:15

Over 500 died. It was a third of
the town’s population, and now
nobody lives in Itomori anymore.

Taki flips through the book of victims, searching.

Beat.

TAKI 52:29
[GASPS] Teshigawara...and
Sayaka. [GASPS AGAIN]

We see their names along with age, “17”. No pictures. Beat.

Sweat rolls down Taki’s cheek.

CU of a name in the book. It reads, “MITSUHA MIYAMIZU, 17”.

OKUDERA 52:39
Huh? That’s her? You were
wrong. You gotta be. After all,
this girl here died three years
ago!

TAKI
[GRUNTS W/GRITTED TEETH] Just
two or three weeks ago, she
said that I’d be able to see
the comet. That means--!
Taki looks at the window in front of him. He stares at his
reflection.

HITOHA (V.O.) 52:54

You’re dreamin’ right now,
aren’t you?

TAKI 52:57
[CROSS] I...

TAKI CONT’D 53:00

I... What...was I...?

INT. MOTEL - LOUNGE - NIGHT

Vending machines line the walls with drinks and food. A

small TV plays with couches and chairs littered around.

Okudera lights a cigarette and puffs out a cloud of smoke.

Laughter through the walls as people watch a sports game.

Tsukasa walks in from the reception desk.

OKUDERA 53:18
Sounds lively over there.

TSUKASA 53:20
[SIGHS] They only have one
room left. I’m really sorry.

OKUDERA 53:23
It’s not a problem.

Tsukasa orders a drink from the vending machine.

OKUDERA (CONT'D) 53:26
How’s Taki?

TSUKASA 53:27
He’s still reading articles on
Itomori. He’s going through all
those newspapers and magazines
at random. Seems obsessive.

Tsukasa sits beside Okudera. He stares at her.

OKUDERA 53:38
[SLIGHT LAUGH] What is it?

TSUKASA 53:40
Oh, sorry. You smoke, huh?

OKUDERA 53:42
Yeah. I did quit at one point.

TSUKASA 53:46
What do you think about what Taki’s
been saying?

Okudera takes a small drag.

OKUDERA 53:52
I had feelings for him, you know.

TSUKASA 53:54
[SMALL GASP]

OKUDERA (CONT'D) 53:55

The way he’s been recently... I
mean, he was a nice guy before,
but he’s even nicer now. Kind
of...frantic. It was cute.
Although I do think what he’s been
telling us is definitely strange
sounding.

A few motel residents walk by in robes.

MOTEL GUEST 54:12

Well, everything I had was great!

OKUDERA (CONT'D) 54:13

[CROSS] But in the end, the fact
remains that Taki’s met someone,
and that someone is the reason he
changed. That much is for sure.

HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

Taki checks his phone diary again-- no entries.

TAKI 54:30
[GRITS TEETH, SIGHS]

TAKI CONT’D: 54:36

It was all just a dream. I
recognized the landscape because
I unconsciously remembered the
news from three years ago. If
it’s not that, is she... a
ghost? Or... did I just make it
up? The whole thing? [GASP]

He raises his head. Suddenly worried.

TAKI (CONT'D) 54:59

What was her name? I can’t remember.

A knock on the door.

Okudera walks in wearing the same bathrobe that the other
residents wore earlier.

OKUDERA 55:05
Tsukasa said he was gonna go ahead
and take a bath.

TAKI 55:08
Ms. Okudera. Uh. I, um... I
realize I’ve been saying a lot
of strange things. I’m really
sorry, and thank you.

Okudera puts her toiletries in her backpack. She shakes her

head. “No problem”.

CUT TO:
MOMENTS LATER

Taki and Okudera read through an Itomori magazine.

Pictures of braided cords fill the pages with the title,

“THE BRAIDED CORDS OF ITOMORI”.
OKUDERA 55:26
Braided cords. Pretty. That band
on your wrist, that’s one, isn’t
it?

Taki, sipping tea, looks at his wrist. Mitsuha’s braided

cord is still wrapped around it.

TAKI 55:32
Huh? Oh, this thing? Guess so.
Somebody...someone gave it to me.
I wear it sometimes as kind of a
lucky charm. [BEAT] Who was it?

Taki stares at the cord.

OKUDERA 55:49
It’s late. Why don’t you go down
and take a bath too?

TAKI 55:52
Sure.
(beat)
Wait.

He stares at the braid, as if seeing it for the first time.

TAKI (CONT'D) 55:57

Yeah. Someone who makes these.
They once told me something. The
cords represent the flow of time.
They twist and tangle, unravel and
connect. And that’s what
time...is.

TAKI (CONT'D) 56:12

[GASPS] Maybe if I could... [GASPS
AGAIN]

Taki remembers. He moves the books aside and pulls out a map
of Itomori’s topography. Okudera looks at him, worried.

OKUDERA 56:19
[LIGHT SIGH]
CUT TO: LATER

Tsukasa and Okudera sleep soundly in their futons.

Taki sleeps at the desk. The map spread out in front of him.
We see circles drawn on the map along with the words,
“AROUND HERE???”. A black pen lies centimeters from his
hand.

Mitsuha’s voice appears - quiet at first, but

gradually growing louder. Her voice echoes in Taki’s
mind.

MITSUHA (V.O., CRESCENDO) 56:41

Taki... Taki... Taki!

Suddenly, her voice becomes crystal clear. Like she is

talking right beside Taki’s ear.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 56:48

Don’t you remember?

Taki’s eyes shoot open.

TAKI 56:49
[GASPS AS HE JOLTS AWAKE]

He looks at the braided cord around his wrist.

HOTEL ROOM - THE NEXT DAY

Bright sunlight shines on Okudera’s sleeping body. She wakes

and immediately looks towards Taki’s desk. Empty.
Tsukasa continues to sleep.
A note on the desk with some cash. It reads, “I HAVE TO GO
SOMEWHERE. GO BACK TO TOKYO WITHOUT ME. I’LL RETURN LATER.
THANKS.”

OKUDERA 57:11
[SIGHS] Taki…

INT/EXT. CAR - MOVING - DAY

Taki rides with Nakata in a small buggy. They drive up

a steep mountain road.

The cloudy sky predicts rain as they pass rubble

and destroyed buildings.

Taki tries to find the location on his phone's GPS.

EXT. ITOMORI FOREST - LATER

Nakata stops the car at the entrance to a small trail leading

up the mountain. He hands a lunchbox to Taki.

NAKATA 57:38
Eat this bento up there.

TAKI 57:40
Huh?

Taki kindly accepts.

NAKATA (CONT'D) 57:41

Your drawin’ of Itomori...you
did a real good job.
MOUNTAINSIDE - MOMENTS LATER

The scenery is similar to when Mitsuha, Yotsuha, and Hitoha

hiked up to see the shrine god, but the red and orange
leaves are replaced with lush, green ones.

Thunder rumbles as Taki walks up the path. It starts to

rain-- hard.

TAKI 58:02
[PANTS AS HE RUNS THROUGH THE RAIN]

Taki runs to shelter beneath a large rock. He maps out his

route and eats Nakata’s lunch.

He stares at Mitsuha’s braided cord.

TAKI (V.O.) 58:22

They assemble, and take shape.
They twist, tangle, unravel now
and then, break and reconnect.
That’s what a union is. What time
is.
[PANTS AS HE REACHES THE
MOUNTAINTOP]

MOUNTAINTOP - LATER

Taki makes it to the top edges of the crater. The

shallow basin and the god’s shrine lies beneath him.

TAKI 58:47
There it is. It’s really there. It
wasn’t a dream.
He wipes his eyes, both from rain and from tears, and
makes his descent into the basin.

BASIN - MOMENTS LATER

A light, steady rainfall and fog surround Taki as he arrives

at the river that separates the underworld from the
overworld.

TAKI 59:26
What lies ahead...is the
netherworld.

He steps into the river and wades his way through. The water
reaches up to his elbows.

INT. CAVE SHRINE - LATER

Crude, stone steps lead the way down. An old rope, serving
as a handrail, barely fights off the rot and decay.

Taki arrives at a small shrine in the back of the cave. Two

sealed vases, containing Mitsuha and Yotsuha’s sake, sit
preserved on the stone platform. Mold and fungus grow on
them.

TAKI 59:52
It’s still here.

He shines his phone flashlight on the vase to the right.

TAKI (CONT'D) 59:56

This was Yotsuha’s...

He shines the light to the vase on the left.

TAKI (CONT'D) 59:58

...and this was mine.

He picks up Mitsuha’s sake.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:00:02
This was before the comet. So
when I switched places with her,
it was also three years in the
past. Our times...got tangled
somehow.

He uncorks the vase.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:00:16
This is half of her...

Taki pours out some sake. It’s nice and clear.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:00:33

Musubi. If it’s true, and
time can be unraveled, just
give me one chance.

He downs the sake. Beat.

He stands slowly, phone in hand.

Taki slips and falls on the wet stone. As he falls, the

phone flashlight in his hand illuminates the cave ceiling.

TAKI 1:00:52
[STARTLED GASP as he falls, then second GASP AS HE
REALIZES at 1:00:56]
A comet!
[1:01:04, THIRD GASP as he - THWUMP - hits the
ground]

An old cave painting of a comet reflects the phone’s light.

Vibrant colors used from different iridescent paints
recreate the colors of the comet we saw before.

Taki hits the ground in slow motion.

TAKI 1:01:23
[GRUNTS AS HE IS DRAGGED DOWN]

The cave painting comet becomes animated and turns into a

red ribbon twisting through space, then water. Taki splashes
through the water, one end of the red string tied around his
wrist.

...The string travels through space and turns into the comet
hurtling towards Earth. Just as it hits, the comet becomes a
sperm and the Earth becomes an egg. Life begins to form. The
zygote duplicates. The sound of a heartbeat. A baby cries
far away.

...We see FUTABA MIYAMIZU (late 20s), beautiful and sweaty,

laying in bed, clutching a newborn baby’s hand.
FUTABA 1:02:02
Your name’s going to be Mitsuha.

...Scissors cut the umbilical cord. Taki falls further away.

TAKI 1:02:08
[GASPS AS THE CORD IS CUT]

...Images of Toshiki, Futaba, and Mitsuha as they live

a happy life as keepers of the Miyamizu Shrine.

TOSHIKI (O.S.) 1:02:12

Both of you are my treasures.

...The three huddle around Futaba’s pregnant belly.

Mitsuha is a few years old.

FUTABA 1:02:14
You’re going to be a big sister.

...A crayon drawing of a family that reads, “GET WELL SOON,

MOM”. It hangs by Futaba’s hospital bed.

FUTABA (CONT'D) 1:02:19

I’m so sorry, my dears.

...Everyone gathers at Futaba’s funeral.

YOTSUHA (O.S.) 1:02:24

Dad, when is Mommy coming
home?

...Toshiki descends into despair.

TOSHIKI (O.S.) 1:02:27

I couldn’t help her.

HITOHA (O.S.) 1:02:29

Get a hold of yourself!

...Hitoha and Toshiki argue at Miyamizu Shrine.

Mitsuha listens from behind a wall.

TOSHIKI 1:02:31
Who cares about the shrine?

HITOHA 1:02:32
But you’re in charge now!
TOSHIKI 1:02:34
I loved Futaba! Not
Miyamizu Shrine!

HITOHA 1:02:36
Get out!

...Mitsuha cries and covers her ears.

...Mitsuha and Yotsuha watch as their father leaves.

...Mitsuha (early teens) and Yotsuha (grade school)

learn the braided cords from Hitoha at Miyamizu Shrine.

HITOHA (CONT'D) 1:02:41

Now listen to me, girls.
Startin’ today, you’ll be
livin’ with Grandma.

...The camera zooms out from the shrine, and the red string
flows out. The other end is connected to Taki’s wrist as he
is pulled away.

TAKI 1:02:49
[SHUTTERED BREATHING as he falls
through space]

...Mitsuha (17) looks at Taki’s writing in her

notebook. We’ve seen these shots before.

MITSUHA (V.O.)1:02:52
Who am I? Who are you?

...Mitsuha writes her name on her hand.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:02:55

Don’t be full of yourself. Like
you have a girlfriend!

...Mitsuha writes on her face using a mirror. Taki, in the

mirror, watches her.

TAKI 1:02:56
[CROSS, GASPS as he sees Mitsuha]

...Mitsuha sitting up in her bed looking out the window.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:02:28

Must be nice. They’ve probably
met up about now.
...Mitsuha ties her hair with the braided cord in the
mirror. The camera dollies to the side to reveal Mitsuha’s
crying face.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:03:02

[GASPS LIGHTLY] Why am I...?

...Mitsuha, same day, walks with Yotsuha to school.

MITSUHA (CONT'D) 1:03:05

I’m going to Tokyo.

YOTSUHA 1:03:06
What? Wait, sis!

...MIYAMIZU SHRINE. Mitsuha, still the same day, with her

hair down, sadly stands by the doorway. Taki floats
through the mess of memories.

TAKI 1:03:10

[CONTINUES SHUTTERED BREATHING]

MITSUHA 1:03:10
Grandma? Would you mind doin’ me a favor?

...Scissors cut through Mitsuha’s hair.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:03:15

Oh, yeah, the comet.

...BEDROOM. Mitsuha dresses in her yukata, hair now short.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:03:18

It’ll be at its brightest today,
right?

...Mitsuha studies herself in the mirror. Taki calls to her.

TAKI 1:03:21
Mitsuha! Don’t go there! Mitsuha!
You’ve gotta get out of town
before the comet strikes! [GASPS]

...FIELD. He sees Mitsuha’s last memory; He sees the comet

fall.
TAKI (CONT'D) 1:03:31
Mitsuha, run!

...Meteors crash down in the fields around Mitsuha.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:03:33
Mitsuha! Mitsuha!

...The largest meteor right above her head.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:03:36

MITSUHAAAA!

...We zoom into Mitsuha’s eye. The comet reflects in her

pupil.

CUT TO BLACK.
INT. MITSUHA'S BEDROOM - DAY

Mitsuha (Taki) wakes up.

MITSUHA 1:03:45
[GASPS as her eyes burst open]

Hair short, but everything else seems normal. She jolts up

and studies herself in disbelief.

MITSUHA 1:03:51
[PANTING]

MITSUHA 1:03:56
Mitsuha! She’s alive. [Small SOBS as
she hugs self]

Trembling, she hugs herself.

Yotsuha opens the door, business as usual.

YOTSUHA 1:04:10
Lemme guess, you’re touchin’ your
boo--[SHOCKED GASP]

She sees Mitsuha bawling, snot dripping down her nose-- an

absolute mess.

And yes, she is, in fact, touching her boobs.

MITSUHA 1:04:14
[BAWLING] Her sister!

Mitsuha starts crawling to Yotsuha, bawling-- it’s quite

a frightful sight.
MITSUHA (CONT'D) 1:04:19
[MORE SOBS] Yotsuha!!! [CONTINUES TO CRY]

Yotsuha slams the door in Mitsuha’s face, trembling

in terror.

LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Yotsuha, dressed for school, consults her grandma.

YOTSUHA 1:04:24
I think she’s finally lost it.
Just for today, I’m gonna head
out first.

FRONT DOOR

Yotsuha puts on her shoes and leaves for school.

YOTSUHA 1:04:30
She’s lost it. Really lost it.
Totally, totally lost it.

LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

The news on the TV talks about the comet.

ANCHOR 1:04:35
For all you star-gazers out
there, the comet Tiamat has been
visible to the naked eye for
about a week now. Tonight, it
will finally reach its perigee
around 7:40 p.m. and be at its
maximum brightness when viewed
from the earth’s surface.

Mitsuha stands in front of the TV in her school

uniform. Hands on her hips, deep in thought.

MITSUHA 1:04:47
It’s tonight. There’s still time left.

Hitoha brings a tray of tea to the living room.

HITOHA 1:04:51
Mornin’, Mitsuha. (Beat)
What’s this? Hold on, you’re not
Mitsuha, are you?

MITSUHA 1:04:58
[Shocked, GASPS]
Wait, how did you...? You already knew?

HITOHA 1:05:03
No, but watchin’ the way
you’ve been behavin’ lately
stirred some memories up.

Hitoha pours some tea.

HITOHA (CONT'D) 1:05:10

When I was a young girl, I had
some pretty strange dreams
myself.

MITSUHA 1:05:16
Huh?

HITOHA 1:05:16
Though it’s been so long, the
memories of who I became in
those dreams have pretty much
faded at this point.

MITSUHA 1:05:23
Faded...

HITOHA 1:05:24
Treasure the experience. Dreams
eventually will fade away. I
went through similar times
myself, and so did your mother.

Mitsuha warms her hands on the teacup.

MITSUHA 1:05:35
[GASPS] What if...all those dreams
that the Miyamizu people had...it
had to do with today? Grandma, you
have to listen to me! Tonight, the
comet is going to fall on Itomori.
You’re all gonna die!

Hitoha stares at Mitsuha like she’s gone crazy.

HITOHA 1:05:51
Huh?
EXT. ITOMORI - LATER

Mitsuha runs down the school road with eager determination.

MITSUHA 1:05:53
[HEAVY BREATHING while sprinting]

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:05:58

“Nobody’s gonna believe that”? I
didn't expect that out of
Mitsuha’s grandma. It doesn't
matter. There’s no way I’m gonna
let them all die!

INT. CLASSROOM - DAY

Sayaka and Teshi are shocked at Mitsuha’s new haircut. The

timeframe is before Mitsuha’s hair reveal at the festival.

SAYAKA 1:06:07
Mitsuha! What happened to--?

TESHI 1:06:10
[GASPS] What’d you... your hair!

MITSUHA 1:06:14
(nonchalant)
Ah, the haircut?. Looked better
before, huh?

TESHI 1:06:15
No! I-It’s good!

MITSUHA 1:06:18
Nevermind that! If we don’t
do something about tonight,
we’ll all die!

The entire class looks over.

SAYAKA 1:06:22
What?

SAYAKA 1:06:24 TESHI 1:06:24

Uh... Uh...
MITSUHA (CONT'D) 1:06:25
It’s up to us to save everyone!
CUT TO:
INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - DAY

A middle-aged convenience store clerk scans a basket

full of snacks. Sayaka waits nervously with her wallet
in hand.

CLERK 1:06:32
Wait, shouldn’t you be in school?

SAYAKA 1:06:34
Well, we sort of have to save the town, or
somethin’...

CLERK 1:06:38
Huh?

INT. AV CLUB ROOM - DAY

Mitsuha and Teshi discuss their plan of action in a crowded

AV storage room. The two sit on a beat up couch hovering
over a laptop.

MITSUHA 1:06:40
The warning system?

TESHI 1:06:24
Yeah, those speakers all
over town.

They Google “SUPERIMPOSITION, FREQUENCY”.

MITSUHA 1:06:48
Ah, I get it. It could work!
Nice job, Teshi!

Mitsuha bumps Teshi off the laptop with her butt. Teshi,
trapped between Mitsuha and some boxes, blushes
nervously.

TESHI 1:06:53
Hey! I don’t think you should
be sittin’ so close to me.
MITSUHA 1:06:55
(playful)
What’s wrong? Uh-oh! You shy?

She elbows him, her face extremely close.

Teshi sits on the couch’s backrest, trying to get

further away.

TESHI 1:06:57
Would ya quit it? It ain’t proper!
And you know it!

MITSUHA 1:07:01
Huh? [LAUGHS] Such a gentleman!

Sayaka slides open the clubroom door with her foot. Her two
hands are full of snacks.

SAYAKA 1:07:09
I bought all the snacks, guys!
Here’s the change.

Sayaka hands Mitsuha the coins.

MITSUHA 1:07:11
Sorry for the trouble.

TESHI 1:07:11
(Cross, to self) Woah, got all the
stuff I like.

SAYAKA 1:07:13
I didn’t mind.

TESHI 1:07:14
We oughta be gettin’ paid.

MITSUHA 1:07:15
Quit complaining.

They dig through the snacks. Sayaka opens a small cake.

SAYAKA (CONT'D) 1:07:18

So? What’d you come up with?
Got an escape plan?

Mitsuha and Teshi look at each other.

Beat.

A mischievous grin spreads across both their faces.

MITSUHA 1:07:23 TESHI 1:07:23

[CHUCKLES EVILLY] [CHUCKLES EVILLY]

CUT TO:
MOMENTS LATER

Sayaka stutters in horror, a bite taken from her cake.

SAYAKA 1:07:26
A...A--A bomb!?

TESHI 1:07:28
Yeah, we have water gel
explosives we use for
construction at our storage
site.

CUT TO:
MOMENTS LATER

Another bite taken from Sayaka’s cake.

SAYAKA 1:07:33
And the warning system?

TESHI 1:07:36
[WITH MOUTH FULL] A startup
frequency can hijack the town’s
warning system pretty easily.

MITSUHA 1:07:26
So we can broadcast an
evacuation warning for the whole
town right from school!

Mitsuha points to a map.

MITSUHA (CONT'D) 1:07:44
Look, we're right outside the
disaster area here, so we’ll just
make an announcement to evacuate
to the school.

SAYAKA 1:07:49
It’s-- It’s totally a crime!
MITSUHA 1:07:52
You’ll be in charge of the
broadcast, Saya.

SAYAKA 1:07:53
Why me?!

TESHI 1:07:54
You’re in the broadcast club. And
I’ll be in charge of explosives.

MITSUHA 1:07:58
While I go have a word with the mayor.

SAYAKA 1:08:00
Why?

TESHI 1:08:00
‘Cause if the evacuation order’s not
comin’ from town hall, then nobody’s
gonna go anywhere.

MITSUHA 1:08:05
But if I talk to the mayor, as
his daughter, I can convince
him.

TESHI 1:08:08
It’s a perfect plan.

SAYAKA 1:08:09
[SIGHS] Fine, I don’t really
care one way or the other. This
is just a theory of yours,
right?

Mitsuha bites her lip.

MITSUHA 1:08:16
Uh...Well...

TESHI 1:08:18
Theories can be based on
reality! Like, do you know the
story of how Lake Itomori was
formed? It’s a crater! That
means a meteor hit this area at
least once a thousand years
ago!
Teshi shows Sayaka a scientific article on the laptop. The
research reads “A METEOR CRATER LAKE FORMED 1200 YEARS AGO”.
Mitsuha’s eyes widen.
FLASHBACK TO CAVE DRAWING OF THE COMET.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:08:27

[GASPS, then to herself] Right!
That’s why...

BACK TO CLUBROOM.

MITSUHA 1:08:30
(excited)
Nice one, Teshi!

Mitsuha and Teshi fist bump like two bros. Sayaka watches,
What’s wrong with these two?

SAYAKA 1:08:34
[GROANS to herself]

Mitsuha and Teshi turn to Sayaka with hungry eyes.

MITSUHA 1:08:36 TESHI 1:08:36

Let’s go evacuate the town! Let’s go evacuate the town!

INT. ITOMORI TOWN HALL - DAY

A pristine office made of leather and wood. Mitsuha’s father

and Mayor of Itomori, Toshiki, sits at his desk.

Mitsuha stands, facing her father bravely.

TOSHIKI 1:08:42
What on Earth are you
talking about?

MITSUHA 1:08:46
Like I said, we have to evacuate
everyone in town before tonight
or-
TOSHIKI 1:08:50
(Cutting her off) Enough. Shut up!
MITSUHA 1:08:52
[GASPS, TAKEN ABACK]
Toshiki pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs deeply.

Toshiki looks out the window towards the sky.

TOSHIKI (CONT'D)
[GROANS, Beat.] “The comet’s
going to split in two and strike
the town”? “Over 500 people will
die”? How dare you stand there
and spout such nonsense? If
you’re serious, you must be
sick.
Mitsuha recoils, speechless.

TOSHIKI (CONT'D) 1:09:10

(to himself)
I guess recklessness is a
Miyamizu trait.
(to Mitsuha)
I’ll have a car take you to the
city hospital for an examination.
We will continue this discussion
after you’ve seen a doctor.

Toshiki reaches for the landline on his desk. Mitsuha, angry,

storms towards her father.

She grabs Toshiki’s tie and pulls him closer to her.

MITSUHA 1:09:24
You!...You son of a--!

Beat.

Mitsuha stops, regaining her senses. Toshiki stares at his

daughter, a cold sweat on his temple.

Mitsuha lets go slowly.

TOSHIKI 1:09:33
[GRUNTS, then GASPS as he
realizes] Mitsuha... no. Wait a
minute... who are you?

MITSUHA 1:09:45
[GASPS]

EXT. ITOMORI - LATE EVENING

Construction workers are building stalls and shop keeps
are setting out their goods. A few people hang lanterns.

Mitsuha walks home on the school road, defeated.

A group of middle schoolers wave goodbye to each other while

walking home.

GIRL 1 1:10:00
I’ll see you guys at the festival! G’bye!

BOY 1:10:02
We’ll meet you at the steps of
the shrine1 Don’t be late, okay?

GIRL 2 1:10:04
(to Girl 1) See ya!

BOY 1:10:05
(to Girl 1) Later!

The first girl goes off in the opposite direction of

Mitsuha. Mitsuha catches the two kids going her way. She
grabs the boy by the shoulders.

MITSUHA 1:10:08
[SMALL GASP] You shouldn’t go!
You’ve got to leave town! Tell
all of your friends!

The boy pushes away.

BOY 1:10:13
What’s wrong with ya?!

YOTSUHA (O.S.) 1:10:14

Mitsuha!

Yotsuha runs to catch up to Mitsuha.

BOY 1:10:15
(to Girl 2) What was that
about?
GIRL 2 1:10:16
C’mon. Let’s go.

The girl drags the boy off.

YOTSUHA 1:10:18
What’re you doing, huh?
MITSUHA 1:10:20
(to herself)If it was Mitsuha,
would she have been able to
convince him?
(to Yotsuha) Is this all my
fault?

YOTSUHA 1:10:26
Huh?

MITSUHA 1:10:26
Yotsuha! Promise me that you’ll
leave town with Grandma before
dark!

YOTSUHA 1:10:30
What?!

MITSUHA 1:10:31
You’re gonna die if you stay here!

YOTSUHA 1:10:32
What’re you talkin’ about? And
why’d you suddenly go to Tokyo
yesterday? You’ve been actin’
really strange lately!

MITSUHA 1:10:39
Huh? Went to Tokyo?

Sayaka rides behind Teshi as the two bike towards Mitsuha

and Yotsuha.
SAYAKA 1:10:42
Hey! Mitsuha!

TESHI 1:10:47
How did it go with your old man?

Beat.

Mitsuha is deep in thought.

TESHI (CONT'D) 1:10:50

Huh? Hey, Mitsuha!
(to Yotsuha) What’s with
your sister?
YOTSUHA 1:10:55
Dunno.

MITSUHA 1:10:56

[GASPS]

YOTSUHA 1:10:57
Huh?

The sound of a bell ringing echoes softly from a tall,

distant mountain.

A breeze picks up.

CU of Mitsuha as she stares at the mountain.

MITSUHA 1:11:06
Could she be over there?

Everyone looks where she’s looking.

SAYAKA 1:11:09
What’s that? What’s over there?

Mitsuha pushes Teshi off his bike.

MITSUHA 1:11:11
Let me use your bike, Teshi.

TESHI 1:11:13
Hey... Mitsuha!
Mitsuha rides off.

TESHI (CONT'D) 1:11:17

And what do we do?

MITSUHA 1:11:18
Get things ready like we planned!
I’m counting on you!
INT. CAVE SHRINE - DAY

Taki (Mitsuha) groggily wakes up. Gasps.

TAKI 1:11:47
Oh my gosh! I’m Taki again.
BASIN - MOMENTS LATER

Taki shields his eyes from the harsh sunset rays.

TAKI 1:11:54
But what was Taki doin’ out here?

Taki clumsily climbs out of the basin. He looks down

at Itomori and sees the giant crater and destruction.

Beat.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:12:03

[GASPS] The town. It’s...gone.

Shocked, Mitsuha remembers the day she died.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:12:18

So...does that mean...they died?

Taki slumps on a rock, stunned.

EXT. MOUNTAINSIDE - SUNSET

Mitsuha (Taki) bikes up the mountain road as fast as she

can.

MITSUHA 1:12:30
[HEAVY BREATHING as she bikes up
the hill]

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:12:37

Taki... Taki... Don’t you
remember?

CUT TO:
EXT. ITOMORI TRAIN STATION - DAY - FLASHBACK

ALL FLASHBACK SCENES WILL BE IN RED.

Mitsuha, in her school uniform, hops on a train to Tokyo.
INT. TRAIN - CONTINUOUS

She stares out of the window.

CUT TO:
EXT. ITOMORI - EARLIER

Mitsuha and Yotsuha leave the house.

MITSUHA 1:12:57
I’m goin’ to Tokyo for a few hours.

YOTSUHA 1:12:59
What? Right now? But why?

MITSUHA 1:13:01
Uh...for a date.

YOTSUHA 1:13:03
Huh?! You have a boyfriend in Tokyo?

MITSUHA 1:13:05
I-I didn't say it was a date for me.

CUT TO:
EXT. MOUNTAINSIDE - SUNSET

Mitsuha (Taki) pants heavily as he bikes up the steep path.

Mitsuha’s voice from the previous scene bleeds into this

one.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:13:09

...I’ll be back tonight.

CUT TO:

INT. RURAL JAPAN - TRAIN - DAY - FLASHBACK

Mitsuha stares at the scenery flying by.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:13:14

If I suddenly show up, would it
be a nuisance? Or a surprise? He
might not like it if I do.

The train goes into a tunnel…

INT. TOKYO - TRAIN - LATER

...And we emerge in Tokyo. We see skyscrapers and

billboards.

STATION - LATER

Mitsuha steps off the train, gawking at the scenery. A true

fish out of water.

Mitsuha tries calling Taki’s phone, but is met with a

carrier message.

OPERATOR 1:13:29
The number you are trying to
reach is currently outside the
cellular network.

She hangs up.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:13:33

I guess it won't happen. But
what if it did?

INT. SUBWAY - LATER

Mitsuha sits beside a working woman and some high

school girls.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:13:38

What would I do? Would I annoy
him? Would it be awkward?

EXT. TOKYO - LATER

Mitsuha wanders the crowded streets. A mega screen plays

news about Comet Tiamat.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:13:45

Or maybe...

INT. BUS - LATER

The bus is mainly empty. A couple sits in the very

back. Mitsuha sits alone.

Mitsuha stares out the window.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:13:47

...he’d be a bit glad to see me?

OPERATOR (V.O.) 1:13:50

The number you are trying to
reach is currently outside the
cellular network.
EXT. BRIDGE - LATE AFTERNOON

Mitsuha stands on the same bridge where Taki and

Okudera finished their date. She calls Taki’s phone
again.

The framing is the same when Taki called Mitsuha for

the first time.

She hangs up.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:13:55

I guess we won’t meet.

She walks off.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:13:59

But... there’s one thing I’m certain of.

EXT. TOKYO - LATER

MCU of Mitsuha’s feet, lost in a sea of other pedestrian's

feet. A mass of people moving in all directions.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:14:04

If we see each other, we’ll definitely
know right away.

Mitsuha fixes her shoes. Her posture slumped, her feet sore.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:14:10

That you were the one who
was in me.

Mitsuha sits on some stairs with her shoes off. She massages
her feet.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:14:14

And that I was the one who was
in...you.

She bumps into somebody.

MITSUHA 1:14:17
S-sorry.

EXT. SUBWAY STATION - LATER

Mitsuha rests on a seat by the train tracks. She stares

at the sunset, exhausted.

The train slowly pulls up.

CONDUCTOR 1:14:22
The train will be arriving
momentarily. Please stand behind the
line. When entering the train, please
mind the gap.

Looking through the window, we see all the cars are packed
with people. It’s rush hour. Everyone is getting off work
and going home.

Mitsuha watches as the cars go past. Beat.

Her eyes widen, a rush of excitement from within her.

She races after a specific car as it passes her.

MITSUHA 1:14:40
[GASPS]

The train finally comes to a stop and the doors open. A few
people get off and Mitsuha squeezes in.

MITSUHA 1:14:50
‘Scuse me.

CONDUCTOR 1:14:52
The doors are now closing.

The subway doors close and the packed train takes off.

INT. SUBWAY - CONTINUOUS

The camera low to the ground, we see Mitsuha’s feet, among a

sea of sneakers and khakis, as she pushes deeper into the
subway car.

Her feet eventually stop in front of a pair of black

sneakers and plaid pants.

CU of Mitsuha’s face. Blushing, she pushes her hair away

from her face.

She works up the courage to look the boy in the

eyes. Beat.

Taki (14), in his school uniform, doesn’t look up from his

flashcards. He has no idea someone is staring at him.
CUT TO:

EXT. MOUNTAINSIDE - SUNSET

Mitsuha continues to bike up the hill.

MITSUHA 1:15:09

[CONTINUED PANTING, then

GRUNTS as she slips and falls
off the bike.]

A tree root sticks out from the cracked and overgrown

mountain path.

The bike wheel trips on the tree truck, sending Mitsuha

flying off.

The bike falls off the cliff side, breaking apart.

Mitsuha grabs hold of a branch, barely falling off. She

pulls herself up and continues on foot.

MITSUHA 1:15:17

[GRUNTS pulling up from the

tree, then PANTING as she
begins to sprint again]

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:15:23

(As Taki)
That time, three years ago, before
I even knew you...

CUT TO:

INT. SUBWAY - LATE AFTERNOON

The subway conductor announces the next station.

CONDUCTOR 1:15:28
Yotsuya. The platform will be on the right.

Taki and Mitsuha are surrounded by people. Taki still

doesn’t look up.

MITSUHA 1:15:32
(whispers) Taki.
(slightly louder) Taki?
(with confidence) Taki.
Taki looks up. Sees her.

TAKI 1:15:38
Huh?
MITSUHA 1:15:39
Uh. It’s me! Uh...don’t you...
remember?
Beat.

TAKI 1:15:47
Sorry, who are you?

Mitsuha’s smile drops. She looks away. Mitsuha looks as

if she’s about to cry.

MITSUHA 1:15:53
(timid) I-I’m sorry.
Beat.

The train brakes at it nears the station.

Mitsuha, unable to find her balance, leans into Taki, her

eyes glued to the ground.

MITSUHA 1:15:58
[Startled GASP as she falls into Taki]

Taki looks the other way.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:16:03

But he’s Taki.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:16:05

Weird girl.

They arrive at the station and the doors open.

CONDUCTOR 1:16:07

Yotsuya. Yotsuya. Stand clear of the doors.

A group of people leave, Mitsuha follows, trying to escape

the awkward situation.

Taki watches her go.

TAKI 1:16:16
Hold on!
Mitsuha stops momentarily.

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:16:17

Huh?

She looks back, but is immediately pushed forward by the

people leaving the subway behind her.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:16:18

But what’s your name?!

She takes the braided cord out of her hair as the sea
of people drag her out.

MITSUHA 1:16:20
Mitsuha!

She whips the braided cord towards Taki, who grabs onto the
other end.

MITSUHA (CONT'D 1:16:22

My name is...Mitsuha!

CUT TO:

EXT. MOUNTAINSIDE - SUNSET

Taki, out of breath and sweating, runs up the mountain.

MITSUHA 1:16:26
[CONTINUES RUNNING, EFFORTS AS
SHE HITS THE GROUND]

MITSUHA 1:16:31
(Taki)
Three years ago, you showed up.
It was...to see me!

EXT. MOUNTAINTOP - SAME TIME

Taki (Mitsuha) stands up suddenly. Beat.

TAKI 1:16:49
Taki?

The sun flares brightly. Golden, pink light bounces off the
tops of clouds. The destruction of Itomori spread out
underneath them.
Taki walks along the edge of the basin. Beat.

MITSUHA 1:16:59
(echoes) Mitsuha!

TAKI 1:17:02
(echoes) Taki?!

EXT. MOUNTAINTOP - CONTINUOUS

Mitsuha (Taki) hears Taki call out to her. She races to

ELS of the basin. Mitsuha runs along the edge, but Taki is
nowhere to be found.

MITSUHA 1:17:18
Mitsuha! You’re here, right?
Inside my body!

CUT TO:

EXT. MOUNTAINTOP - CONTINUOUS

Taki looks around. He can’t see her either.

The sun shining in the background almost matches up.

TAKI 1:17:24
Taki! Taki, where are you?!

INTERCUT TAKI/MITSUHA.

Mitsuha stops. Catches her breath.

MITSUHA 1:17:28
That was Mitsuha. I can hear her
voice, but...

Mitsuha runs clockwise around the basin. Taki runs

counter-clockwise.
TAKI 1:17:34
Taki? Where are you? Taki!

They are running right towards each other, but they can’t
see each other.
MITSUHA 1:17:38

The moment they pass each other, a brief flash. We see for a
few frames, the braided cord connecting the two of them.

MITSUHA 1:17:44
[GASPS]

TAKI 1:17:44
Huh?

They both stop and look back. The other person isn’t

there.

The both walk towards the point where they felt each other’s
presence.

Taki and Mitsuha face each other, the flaring sun

between them.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:17:52

Taki, are you...

MITSUHA 1:17:55
...Are you there?

They slowly reach their hands out, trying to touch the other
person. Their hands pass the imaginary line, split by the
sun.
Nothing happens.

The sun sinks lower in the sky.

A dark shadow covers Mitsuha and Taki’s faces. They look

at the sun, hidden behind a large cloud.

TAKI 1:18:21 MITSUHA 1:18:21

Magic hour. Magic hour.

MITSUHA 1:18:23
[GASPS, realizing]

Their eyes widen and they slowly face forward.

MCU of Taki’s face as it relaxes. He looks down with an easy

smile. His eyes glance back up.

TAKI 1:18:38
Mitsuha.

FINALLY, a two-shot of the both of them looking at each

other.

The two of them, back in their own bodies, in the same

frame, with the beautiful sunset sky behind them.

Beat.

They just stare. Mitsuha finds the words.

MITSUHA 1:18:45
Taki.

She slowly walks closer to him.

MITSUHA (CONT'D) 1:18:47

Taki. You’re really here. [SOBS]

She touches his chest, making sure he’s real. Tears well
up in her eyes.

She looks him up and down, and smiles. The tears finally

fall.

MITSUHA (CONT'D) 1:18:56

Taki!

Taki smiles softly.

TAKI 1:18:56
I came all this way to see you.
Which wasn’t easy, since you
were pretty far away.

Mitsuha wipes her eyes.

MITSUHA 1:19:04
Huh? How is that even--? Because
back then...

TAKI 1:19:08
Well, I drank some of your
kuchikamizake.

Beat.

MITSUHA 1:19:11
Huh?

Mitsuha steps back, embarrassed.

MITSUHA 1:19:15
You--You drank that?

TAKI 1:19:17
Huh?

MITSUHA 1:19:18
Stupid pervert!

TAKI 1:19:19
Wh-what?!

MITSUHA 1:19:20
Yeah! That’s right! You were touching
my boobies, weren’t you?

Caught.
TAKI 1:19:23
(panicked) Wh--?! H-How do you even...?

MITSUHA 1:19:25
‘Cause Yotsuha saw you!

TAKI 1:19:26
(stutters) I-I just couldn’t help
myself! But it was just the one time.
MITSUHA 1:19:31
Just the one time? Hmm...

Mitsuha thinks it over.

MITSUHA (CONT'D) 1:19:34

How many times isn’t the
issue!

Taki, red in the face, claps his hands together in prayer.

TAKI 1:19:37
Eh-Sorry!

Beat.

Mitsuha sees her braided cord hanging from his wrist.

MITSUHA 1:19:38
Wait, is that...

Taki takes the ribbon off.

TAKI 1:19:41
Oh, yeah, it’s yours, but you
visited before I knew you. So I
didn't know who you were.

He hands the ribbon over.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:19:48

Here. I kept it for three
years. But I think it’s time
you got it back.

Mitsuha nods, happy.

She ties the ribbon around her short hair. She turns it
into a hairband with a little bow.

MITSUHA 1:20:04
What do ya think?

TAKI 1:20:05
(blushing) Oh, uh, well...It’s
not bad.

MITSUHA 1:20:09
Oh, you’re lyin’!
TAKI 1:20:10
[CHUCKLES] Busted.

MITSUHA 1:20:12
Why you gotta be like that? Hmph! [LAUGHS]

She giggles, then breaks into laughter.

TAKI 1:20:19
[JOINS HER LAUGHING]
Taki joins in, enjoying the awkward first meetup.

TAKI (O.S.) 1:20:29

Hey, Mitsuha, you still have a
lot to do. Listen.

CUT TO:

LATER

The sun hasn’t set fully yet, but we see the comet and
the moon high in the sky.

The two stare up at it.

MITSUHA 1:20:34
It’s coming.

TAKI 1:20:35
Don’t worry. You still have enough time.

MITSUHA 1:20:38
Mmm. I’ll do my best.

The sun sets lower in the sky. Darkness creeps closer.

MITSUHA (CONT'D) 1:20:42

It looks like magic hour’s almost...

TAKI 1:20:45
...over.

Taki takes a pen out of his pocket.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:20:48

Hey, Mitsuha. Just so we don’t
forget things when we wake up…
He takes Mitsuha’s hand and begins writing on it.

MITSUHA 1:20:53
Huh?

TAKI 1:20:57 (CONT'D)

Let’s write down our names.
Here.

Taki hands Mitsuha the pen.

MITSUHA 1:21:01
[GASPS] Mmm!

Mitsuha takes the pen and Taki’s outstretched palm. She

writes her na--

The pen falls to the ground. Beat.

Taki is alone on the mountain, a horizontal pen stroke on

his right palm.

The sun dips below the horizon. He looks up.

Beat.

He looks around.

TAKI 1:21:13
[SMALL GASP] Mitsuha.
(beat)
Hey, Mitsuha?

Back in his own timeline, Taki sees the destroyed Itomori

behind him.

He looks at the stroke on his palm and sighs.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:21:27

I was planning to tell you, that
wherever you are in the world,
I’ll swear that I’ll find you
again, no matter what.

He holds his palm.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:21:39
Your name...is Mitsuha. It’ll be
okay. I’ll remember. Mitsuha.
Mitsuha. Mitsuha! Your name is
Mitsuha! Your name is…[GASP]

Taki quickly picks up the pen. He writes a horizontal

stroke on his left palm.

Beat.

The pen shakes in his trembling hand.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:22:02

Who...are you?

MUSIC CUE: “Sparkle” by RADWIMPS.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:22:07

And what did I even come here for?

Taki drops the pen and yells out.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:22:10

I came...I came all this way to
see her! I came to save her. I
wanted her to be alive. Who was
it again? Who? Who did I come to
see?

Taki stands up, looking over the giant craters.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:22:22

Someone precious. Someone I don’t
wanna forget. Someone I shouldn’t!
Who was it? Who was it? Who? Who?!

Taki slowly breaks down.

TAKI (CONT'D)
(crying) What’s your name?!

His voice echoes through the dark, cold mountains.

A few people gaze at the beautiful comet above them.

EXT. ITOMORI SUBSTATION - NIGHT

Teshi finds Mitsuha at the main power plant for the

MITSUHA 1:23:13
[PANTING coming to a halt] Teshi!

TESHI 1:23:19
Mitsuha! Where the heck have you been?

MITSUHA 1:23:22
He said sorry for breakin’
your bike.

TESHI 1:23:24
Wha--? Who did?

MITSUHA 1:23:26
I did.

TESHI 1:23:27
Mmmm...You’re gonna have to explain
it to me later.

Teshi, wearing a construction helmet and headlamp, carries a

large satchel to the locked fence gate surrounding the
powerplant.

We see bolt cutters and explosives in the bag.

TESHI (CONT'D) 1:23:34

(RE: COMET)
That thing is goin’ to fall, right?
For real?

MITSUHA 1:23:38
For real. I saw it with my own eyes!

TESHI 1:23:40
What? You did, huh? Well, I
guess it’s settled then. We’re
both officially criminals!

He uses the bolt cutters to break the chains locking

the door.

the emergency generators should
kick in right away. Use the
broadcast equipment once it does.

Mitsuha puts the phone to her own ear.

MITSUHA 1:23:59
Don’t be scared Saya! And repeat
it as many times as you can!
Teshi yells out into the darkness, full of adrenaline.

TESHI 1:24:02
Woo-hoo!!! You can do it!

The smaller pieces disintegrate, but the largest chunk tears

through the ozone and dives into the clouds.

As we follow the comet through the clouds, we see the lights

of Japan sparkle below.

The camera tilts down and we see ELS of Itomori, dark

from the power outage.

MIYAMIZU SHRINE

WS of the darkened Miyamizu Shrine. Beat.

The comet crashes into the buildings and explodes.

No sound can be heard.

ITOMORI

An exponentially large area explodes and megatons of

Earth fly into the sky.

The water from Lake Itomori ripples out like a tsunami,

causing nearby trees and buildings to collapse.

Kadoiri Bridge gets demolished.

The wooden picnic table and vending machine disappears from

existence.

Cars and buses crash into buildings.

The torii gate splinters into millions of pieces.

The area surrounding half the lake goes up in flames,

shrouded by smoke, completely destroyed.

FADE TO BLACK.

EXT. MOUNTAINTOP - DAY

Taki wakes up, having slept all night where he met Mitsuha.
He stares at Lake Itomori and the large crater the comet
left behind.

TAKI 1:32:42
Huh? Why am I here? What am I...doing?

Taki looks at the horizontal pen stroke on his hand.

CUT TO BLACK. MATCH CUT TO:

INT. TOKYO - SUBWAY - DAY - 5 YEARS LATER

The same shot of Taki’s hand, but the pen stroke is gone.

Taki (22), older, in a business suit, stands by the door and

stares at his hand longingly.

The subway slowly pulls into the station. Taki looks at

the people waiting on the platform.

CONDUCTOR 1:32:59
Next is Yoyogi. Yoyogi.

For a brief moment, he sees the back of a girl’s head, long

black hair with a braided cord tied around it in a bow.

Taki’s eyes light up.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:33:08

[GASPS]

When the subway doors open, Taki runs out, eyes scanning the
crowd.

She isn’t there.

CONDUCTOR 1:33:15
The doors are closing. Please be
careful.
TAKI (V.O.) 1:33:22
I’m always searching for
something. This feeling has
consumed me for some time.

MONTAGE TAKI

...Taki goes through many interviews as he applies

for architect positions around Tokyo.

QUICK CUTS.

-Taki sits between two other applicants.

TAKI 1:33:31
The reason I applied for this position...

--Taki walks to his next interview at a tall skyscraper.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:33:33

The landscapes people live in...

--He sits in front of a panel of executives.

TAKI (CONT'D) 1:33:35

To build a city’s landscape...Even
Tokyo, it might vanish too one
day. And so, I wanna make
landscapes that - how should I put
this? That...can continue to warm
people’s hearts.

--He bows before leaving, yet another interview.

END MONTAGE.

INT. CAFE - DAY

Taki drinks tea with Shinta and Tsukasa, both 22 and in

business suits. Tsukasa looks like an executive with his
hair slicked to the side; we see a wedding band on his
finger.

TAKI 1:33:48
[GROANS]

SHINTA 1:33:49
That bad? How many does that make it?
TAKI 1:33:51
(annoyed)
I’ve stopped counting.

TSUKASA 1:33:53
Doesn’t sound too promising.

TAKI 1:33:54
Who asked you?

SHINTA 1:33:55
That suit could be the problem.

TAKI 1:33:57
It looks just like yours!

SHINTA 1:33:58
Well, I have two offers.

TSUKASA 1:34:00
I have eight, myself.

TAKI 1:34:01
[GROWLS, then calms] Huh?

His phone beeps and reads, “YOU HAVE A NEW MESSAGE”.

EXT. SUBWAY STATION - LATER

Okudera waits for Taki at the same station where their first
date took place.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:34:07

Is what I’m searching
for...someone? Or somewhere? Or am
I just searching for the right
job? I don’t even really know.

Okudera sees Taki in his suit.

OKUDERA 1:34:19
Oh! You’re job hunting, huh?

TAKI 1:34:21
I haven’t had much luck, though.

Okudera studies Taki closely.

OKUDERA 1:34:23
Hmm...Hey, maybe it’s the suit
that’s killing your chances.

TAKI 1:34:26
Does it really look that bad on me?

OKUDERA 1:34:28
[GIGGLES]

EXT. TOKYO - GOLDEN HOUR - MOMENTS LATER

People head home from their work. The two walk around the
city, catching up.

TAKI 1:34:33
So, why the sudden call today?

OKUDERA 1:34:36
I was in the area for work and
figured it had been a while since
I saw your face.

A large mega screen displays the Itomori crater. The text

reads, “8 YEARS SINCE THE COMET DISASTER”.

OKUDERA (CONT'D) 1:34:43

Remember that one time when we
went all the way to Itomori? You
were still in high school back
then, so it was...

TAKI 1:34:50
[SMALL CHUCKLE] 5 years ago.

OKUDERA 1:34:52
That long? It seems
like...I’ve forgotten a
lot.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:34:58

I don’t remember all that much
either, about back then. Maybe we
argued. She and Tsukasa went back
to Tokyo without me. I spent the
night alone on some mountain.
That’s about all I remember.

The two admire the Tokyo skyline and the Skytree.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:35:17
But at one point in time, I
found myself strangely drawn to
the incident involving that
comet.

Pedestrians passing by look up at the mega screens

displaying the Itomori tragedy.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:35:26

A fragment of the comet destroyed
a town in that disaster.

News footage from that day plays along text that reads,
“EVACUATION OF RESIDENTS TO HIGH SCHOOL GROUNDS
CONFIRMED”.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:35:30

But miraculously, most of the
people living in the town were
unhurt.

More text reads, “NO DEATHS, 104 WOUNDED”.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:35:35

The town happened to be holding an
emergency drill that day, and most
of its residents were outside the
impact zone.

Newspaper clippings with titles such as “RESIDENTS SAFE” and

“DISASTER FORETOLD?”

TAKI (V.O.) 1:35:43

The sheer luck and coincidence of
it all sparked various conspiracy
theories. I read a lot of
articles about it back then. I
was kind of obsessed.

CUT TO:

INT. TAKI'S ROOM - NIGHT - FLASHBACK

We see middle school Taki reading articles on the event.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:35:54

But whatever the reason I had for
my interest is a mystery to me
now.
CUT TO:

EXT. TOKYO - BRIDGE - NIGHT - PRESENT

The same bridge where Taki and Okudera ended their

first date. Where Taki and Mitsuha tried calling each
other.

Taki and Okudera look out towards the city.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:36:01

I didn’t even know anybody in
that town.

OKUDERA 1:36:07
Thanks for today. This is far
enough.

Okudera waves goodbye and we see a wedding band on

her finger.

OKUDERA (CONT'D) 1:36:11

I do hope...that at some point, you’ll
find happiness too.

Okudera leaves.

Beat.

Taki looks at his right hand.

TAKI (V.O.) 1:36:20

I feel like I’m always
searching. For something.
Someone.

INT. CAFE - NIGHT

Taki flips through his planner for next week’s job

interviews. He faces the window; rain pours outside as
he sips his coffee.

SAYAKA (O.S.) 1:36:38

I feel like I do wanna go to
one more bridal fair.

TESHI (O.S.) 1:36:40

They’re all the same.
SAYAKA (O.S.) 1:36:42
A Shinto weddin’ sure sounds nice, too.

TESHI (O.S.) 1:36:45

You said you wanted to be married
in a chapel!

SAYAKA (O.S.) 1:36:46

Mmm...Oh! That reminds me, Teshi.

Taki freezes, his back towards them.

The camera reveals Sayaka and Teshi’s faces. They are 25.
Sayaka has a cute bob hairstyle and Teshi has a patchy
beard.

The two look over wedding plans while Teshi drinks coffee
and Sayaka eats a small cake.

SAYAKA (CONT'D) 1:36:49

Would ya please shave before the
ceremony? I’m goin’ on a diet
for it, ya know?

TESHI 1:36:54
She says as she’s eatin’ a cake.

SAYAKA 1:36:57
[MOUTH FULL] I’ll get serious tomorrow.

Taki looks over at their table. It’s empty.

He sees the two of them leaving the cafe holding hands.

EXT. BRIDGE - NIGHT

A light snowfall. Taki walks across the almost-empty

bridge. A few pedestrians walk back and forth.

Taki passes a woman in a white overcoat and umbrella. Beat.

Out of the corner of his eye, he notices a small braided

cord tied around her hair.

He pauses and looks back.

TAKI 1:37:17
[GASPS]
The umbrella covers the back of her head. Beat.

Taki turns away and continues walking.

The woman turns back slightly, her face covered by

the umbrella.

She watches Taki walk away, then continues her own way.

MUSIC CUE: “Nandemonaiya” by RADWIMPS.

INT. LIBRARY - NIGHT

Taki flips through a picture book of Itomori. We see the

various landmarks we’ve come to recognize: Kadoiri
Bridge, Miyamizu Shrine, and Lake Itomori. The images
draw Taki in.

TAKI 1:37:57
The landscape of a town that’s no
longer there. Why does looking at
it make my chest feel so tight?

MONTAGE TOKYO

...Snowfall comes and goes as the winter passes in Tokyo.

...Timelapse of the sun rising on Tokyo’s skyline.

...Spring arrives. Cherry blossoms bloom throughout Tokyo.

...A busy farmers market.

...We see Mitsuha’s old classmates living life in Tokyo.

...Hana (25), one of Mitsuha’s bullies and member

of Kazuya’s harem, eats some ramen.

...Kazuya helps a customer check out at a convenience store.

...Sayaka and Teshi browse an apartment catalog.

...Yotsuha (17), studies in high school. END MONTAGE.

CUT TO BLACK.
INT. TAKI’S ROOM - DAY

Taki wakes up and looks at his hand.

INT. MITSUHA’S ROOM - SAME TIME

Mitsuha wakes up and looks at her hand.

INTERCUT AS THEY GO THROUGH THEIR DAY

...Taki stares in the mirror as he wipes his face.

...Mitsuha ties her hair with the braided cord.

...The two leave their apartments.

...The two enter subway stations.

INT. SUBWAY - MOMENTS LATER

Taki looks out the window at the passing trains.

ANOTHER SUBWAY - CONTINUOUS

Mitsuha, by the door, gazes out the window. Beat.

Something catches her eye.

MITSUHA 1:39:16
[GASPS]

On the other side of the glass, we see Taki as he turns

towards Mitsuha. His train is going the other way.

The two recognize each other...

TAKI (V.O.) 1:39:24

I was always searching...

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:39:26

Searching for...

...but their subways split off in opposition directions!

MITSUHA (V.O.) 1:39:29

... someone!
MONTAGE

TAKI/MITSUHA QUICK

CUTS.

--Taki sprints past the subway gates.

--Mitsuha searches the station frantically. It’s

impossible to find anyone in the crowded space.

--Taki sprints down a busy Tokyo sidewalk.

--Mitsuha runs along a wide highway.

--Taki searches a quiet neighborhood street.

--Mitsuha sprints down a residential road.

EXT. SUGA SHRINE - STAIRS - MOMENTS LATER

Taki finds himself at the base of a tall flight of stairs

with red rails, embedded in the heart of a residential area.

Beat.

Taki looks up towards the top of the staircase.

The camera tilts up to reveal Mitsuha at the top,

looking down at him.

They make eye contact, but Taki quickly breaks it

and composes himself.

He walks up the stairs nonchalantly.

Mitsuha walks down the stairs, acting normal. The two pass

each other without acknowledgement.

A mixture of sadness, yearning, and pain spreads across

Mitsuha’s face.

MITSUHA 1:40:15
[SHAKILY GASPS]

TAKI 1:40:18
[SHAKILY GASPS]
Taki reaches the top of the stairs. He stops.

Beat.

He takes a deep breath and turns around.

TAKI 1:40:27
Excuse me!

Mitsuha freezes.

TAKI 1:40:29
Haven’t we--Have I...met you somewhere?

Beat.

Mitsuha turns slowly, crying.

MITSUHA 1:40:42
I thought so, too!

Beat.
Tears roll down Taki’s cheeks.

TAKI 1:40:48 MITSUHA 1:40:48

Can I ask you...your name? Can I ask you...your name?

The camera tilts up towards the sky as the music soars

into the clouds.

SUPER: 君の名は

your name

END.
