君の名は (Your name). Directed by Makoto Shinkai, CoMix Wave Films, 14 Dec. 2016.
The movie is mostly about romance between the two main characters Taki Tachibana
and Mitsuha Miyamuzi, but different social issues can also be seen through the whole
movie. The director Makoto Shinkai add unique plots and twist unto his movies which
hides social issues portrayed in the movie in plain sight. The movie plot is about two
students named Mitsuha and Taki. Mitsuha is a high school student that lives in the
country side together with her family and other relatives. Taki on the other hand is a
highschool student that lives and studies in Tokyo. The movie shows here how the two
characters interacts differently based on who are they talking with. This is an example of
Dramaturgy theory by Erving Goffman, Mitsuha shows a different attitude when
interacting with her friends as she always want to leave the province and live in Tokyo
but when shes around her parents Mitsuha is always stoic and doesn’t talk too much.
This shows that we actors plays different roles on the stage or community we belong.
The story continues as Mitsuha and Taki has the ability to swap bodies in their sleep. At
first they thought it was just a dream and do whatever they want while their bodies are
swapped. We can see here the structuralism theory by Claude-Levi Strauss, both
Mitsuha and Taki shares the desire to explore new things as they are both expose in a
new environment. As seen in the movie how they spend each other’s time and money
on things they haven’t experienced before. In structuralism humans have common
needs but are interpreted based on different culture just like how Mitsuha spends her
time exploring the city while Taki explores the country side. Mitsuha and Taki tried many
time to meet up in real life while they are both awake but failed to do so until they made
an unexpected realization that they both lived in different time and Taki lives four years
in advance than Mitsuha. Conflict arises when Taki realized that the Mitsuha in present
already died in an unexpected meteor crash four years ago. In order to prevent the
catastrophe, using their ability to swap bodies Taki warns Mitsuha about the disaster
that is about to happen. Mitsuha then tried to convince his parents to evacuate
everyone before anything could happen. At first Mitsuha’s parents are skeptical about it
but soon listend to her request. The people immediately followed their evacuation order
as Mitsuha’s parent is a well-known politician in their area. The scenario here portrays
Social Capital theory by Pierre Bourdieu in which since her parent has a rich social
relationship to the public as a resources, the people followed his orders without a
second doubt. With the evacuation they evaded the catastrophe and Mitsuha survived.
Four years in the future Mitsuha and Taki finally meet in Tokyo as adults. The movie is a
masterpiece that balances romance, comedy, and mystery. The director also promotes
Japan’s cultural side that is not commonly known to others. The soundtrack is also top-
notch as it helps capture each and every emotion that the scene wants to portray.
