General Instructions:

(i)There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.


(ii)This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E. All the sections
are compulsory.
(iii) Section A contains eighteen MCQ of 1 mark each, Section B contains seven questions of two marks each,
Section C contains five questions of three marks each, Section D contains three long questions of five marks
each and Section E contains two case study based questions of 4 marks each.
(iv) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in sections B, C, D and E. You have
to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
(v) Use of calculators is not allowed.
SECTION-A

magnetic field, the behaviour of magnetic field lines is as
shown in the figure. Identify the magnetic nature of each of
these two materials.

Q 21. A hydrogen atom initially in the ground state absorbs a


photon, which excites it to the n = 4 level. Determine the wavelength and frequency of photon.

Or

Using Bohr's atomic model, derive an expression for the radius of nth orbit of the revolving electron in a hydrogen
atom.

Q 22. Write two characteristics of image formed when an object is placed between the optical centre and focus of
a thin convex lens. Draw the graph showing variation of image distance v with object distance u in this case.

Q 23. Explain the terms 'depletion layer' and potential barrier' in a p-n junction diode. How are the (i) width of
depletion layer, and (ii) value of potential barrier affected when the p-n junction is forward biased?

Q 24. A beam of light


consisting of two wavelengths, 800 nm and 600 nm, is used to obtain the interference fringes in a Young's double
slit experiment on a screen is placed 1.4 m away. If two slits are separated by 0.28 mm, calculate the least distance
from the central bright maximum where the bright fringes of the two wavelengths coincide.

Q 25. The electrostatic attracting force on a small sphere of charge 0.2 uC due to another small sphere of charge -
0.4uC in air is 0.4 N. What will be the distance between the two sphere?

SECTION -C
Q 26. (i) What is extrinsic semiconductor? Explain in detail.

(ii) The number of silicon atoms per m³ is 5 x 10²⁸. This is doped simultaneously with 5 x 10²² atoms per m³ of
Arsenic and 5 x 10²⁰ per m³ atoms of Indium. Calculate the number of electrons and holes. Given that ni = 1.5 x
10¹⁶m-³. Is the material n-type or p-type?

Q 27. A wire in the form of a circular loop of radius 10 cm lies in a plane normal to a magnetic field of 100T. If it is
pulled to take a square shape in the same plane in 0.1s. Calculate the average induced emf in the loop.

Q 28. Draw the diagram of a device which is used to decrease high AC voltage into a low AC voltage and state its
working principle. Write four sources of energy losses in this device.
Or

Figure shows a series LCR circuit connected to a variable


frequency 230V source, L = 5.0H, C = 80uF,R = 40 ohm .

(i)Determine the source frequency which drives the circuit in


resonance.

(ii)Obtain the impedance of the circuit and the amplitude of


current at the resonating frequency.

(iii)Determine the rms potential drops across the three


elements of the circuit. Show that the potential drop across the LC combination is zero at the resonating
frequency.

Q 29. Monochromatic radiation of wavelength 640.2 nm from a neon lamp irradiates a photosensitive material
made of caesium on tungsten. The stopping voltage is measured to be 0.54 V. The source is replaced by an iron
source and its 427.2 nm line irradiates the same photocell. Predict the new stopping voltage.

Figure shows a plot of stopping potential (Vo) with


frequency (v) of incident radiation for two
photosensitive materials M1 and M2. Explain:

(i)Why the slope of both the lines is same?

(ii)For which material emitted electrons have greater


kinetic energy for the same frequency of incident
radiation?

Q 30. State the postulates of Bohr's model of


hydrogen atom and derive the expression for Bohr radius.

SECTION-D
Q 31. (i) Calculate the work done to dissociate the system of three charges placed on the vertices of an equilateral
triangle of side 10 cm as shown in figure. Here q=1.6x10-¹⁰C.

(ii) Four point charges Q, q, Q and q are placed at the corners of a


square of side a as shown in figure.

Find the:

(a) Resultant electric force on a charge Q and


(b) Potential energy of this system.

Or
(i) What is a capacitor? Deduce an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor with air as
the medium between the plates.
(ii) State and prove Gauss's law.

Q32. (i) A circuit has a section ABC as shown in figure. If


the potentials at points A, B and C are V1,V2 and V3
respectively. What is the potential at point O?

(iii) Two cells of emf 1.5 V and 2.0 V having internal resistances 0.2 ohm and 0.3 ohm respectively are
connected in parallel. Calculate the emf and internal resistance of the equivalent cell.

Or

(i) Use Kirchhoff's rules to determine the


potential difference between the points A
and D. When no current flows in the arm BE of
the electric network shown in the figure
below:
(ii) A conductor of length l is connected to a DC
source of potential V. If the length of the
conductor is tripled by gradually stretching
it,keeping V constant, how will:
(a) drift speed of electrons and
(b) resistance of the conductor be affected?
Justify your answer.

Q 33. (i) Under what conditions is the phenomenon of total internal reflection of light observed? Obtain the
relation between the critical angle of incidence and the refractive index of the medium.

(ii)Three lenses of focal lengths +10 cm, - 10 cm and +30 cm are arranged coaxially as in the figure given below.
Find the position of the final image formed by the combination.

Or

(i)Light from a point source in air falls on a spherical glass surface (n = 1.5 and radius of curvature = 20 cm). The
distance of the light source from the glass surface is 100 cm. At what position the image is formed?

(ii)Find the position of the image formed by the lens combination given in the figure.
