Nodal Analysis with Sources

Steps:
1. The product of node potential VA and (1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R4) i.e. the sum of the reciprocals of the branch resistance
connected to this node.
2. Minus the ratio of adjacent potential VB and the interconnecting resistance R2.
3. Minus ratio of adjacent battery (or generator) voltage E1 and interconnecting resistance R1.
4. All the above set to zero.

(i) First Case:

For node 1, the following current equation can be written with the help of KCL.
I1 = I4 + I2

Using conductance instead of resistances, the above two equations may be written as
VA (G1 + G2 + G4) -VBG2 -E1G1 = 0 ...(iv)
VB (G2 + G3 + G5) -VAG2 -E2G3 = 0 ...(v)
The three node equations are:

(ii) Second Case:

E3 must be taken as positive.

However, if we travel from node 2 to node
1, we go from the +ve to the ve terminal of
E3.

Hence, when viewed from node 2, E3 is

taken negative.

For node 1:
Example 1) Using Node voltage method, find the current in the 3resistance for the network
shown in Fig.

Solution: Node 2 taken as the reference node. We will now find the value of node voltage V1

Therefore Current through 3  = (6- V1)/(3+2)= (6-2.667)/5 = 0.666A

Ex.2) Frame and solve the node equations of the network of Fig. Hence, find the total
power consumed by the passive elements of the network.

The passive elements of the network are its five resistances.

Total power consumed by them is = 5.752 × 1 + 3.52 × 0.5 + 92 × 1 + 9.252 × 1 + 5.52 2 = 266.25

EX.3) Find the branch currents in the circuit of Fig. by using nodal analysis.

Solution:
Ex.4) Determine the voltages 1 and 2 of the network in Fig. (a) by nodal

apply KCL to each node and use Ohm’s law to express branch currents in terms of node voltages and resistances.

Node 1
I1 I2 I3 = 0 or I1 = I2 + I3

Now = , I3

I1 = Or ( ) ( ) ………….(1)

Node 2
I3 I2 I4 = 0 or I3 = I2 + I4
EX1) Use nodal analysis method to find currents in the various resistors of the circuit shown in Fig.
Ex 2) Using nodal analysis, find the different branch currents in the circuit of Fig. . All
branch conductances are in siemens (i.e. mho).
