The word “memorial” comes from the Latin word for “memory.” Memorials can be
found all over the world. Most of them were originally built to honor someone or
something, but this isn’t always the case. In fact, they can serve many different functions.
The following are some world-famous memorials, each of which serves a specific function.
First, the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, is a beautiful site built with white marble and
decorated with precious jewels. For many tourists today, it is a must-visit in one’s lifetime.
However, originally, it was built by Indian emperor Shah Jahan for his favorite wife,
Mumtaz Mahal, and is meant to be a symbol of everlasting* love.
Another equally famous tourist attraction is the Great Wall of China, which was built
to keep out dangerous enemies from the north. Although much of the wall has now
disappeared, some remaining parts serve as memorials, reminding us of the great strength
of ancient Chinese emperors and those who lost their lives during the wall’s building
process.
In Egypt, there are memorials that symbolize the strength of a nation’s ruler. Built
thousands of years ago, the pyramids* of Egypt were originally used to bury Egyptian
kings and nobles. These amazing structures were filled with riches and offerings*, and, of
course, inside were the bodies for whom the structures were built.
All these memorials impressed people at the time of their construction and still
impress people today, showing us that they can stand the test of time without losing their
importance.
