Describe the psychotherapy interventions used in the management of mental
health disorders in your setting
According to the mhGAP Intervention Guide (2.0) Psycho-education: Educate the patient, their family, and significant others to enable them to collectively take responsibility towards action or provide the necessary support. Explain to the patient their mental health condition, symptoms, treatment, prognosis (that the patient can recover) and common misconceptions about mental illnesses. Treatment adherence support: Explain to the patient on importance taking medication, and the family to support and monitor the patient takes prescribed medications. Educate them on short-term and long-term effects of medications prescribed. Cognitive behavioral therapy: A form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a number of problems. It can help one to manage their problem (a problem- solving technique) by changing the way they think and behave. While it’s mostly used to treat anxiety and depression, it can be useful for other mental and physical health problems. Relaxation training: A strategy that can be helpful in calming the mind by reducing the tendency to try and control it. This includes running, taking long walks, swimming, weightlifting and yoga. Positive reinforcement: A method for behavioral modification that increases the likelihood or probability of that a behavior will occur. It strengthens a behavior by adding something pleasurable as a reward after the occurrence of the behavior . Massaging and Reflexology: Massaging is a manual technique that typically applies pressure to the whole body. By kneading and manipulating soft tissue we can relieve muscular tension, improve circulation and promote relaxation. Reflexology, on the other hand, is a type of therapy that uses gentle pressure on specific points along one’s feet (and possibly on one’s hands or ears) to help a person feel better. The theory is that this eases stress and helps the body to work better. Diversional therapy: The act of switching focus on something else.
