STEEL TUTORIAL

B.E. (Civil) V sem.- 2016-17

1. The figure below shows a steel bracket connection using 22 mm diameter (12 no.)
bolts. The connection transmits an eccentric load of 200 KN, at a distance of 250 mm
from the centre of the group of bolts. Find the maximum force in the bolts. The pitch
of the bolts is 80 mm and the gauge distance is 100 mm. Check whether the bolts are
safe if the total thickness of plates connecting the bolts is 20 mm. (2002)

2. Determine the number and pattern of 20 mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6 for the truss
connection as shown in figure below: (2007)
3. Design a bolted bracket connection to transfer a factored end reaction of 200 KN at an
eccentricity of 220 mm from the flange of the column section. The load is acting
perpendicular to the plane of the joint.

WELDED CONNECTIONS
4. A welded bracket connects a plate to the column flange (ISHB 300) as shown in the
figure below. Determine the size of the weld if welding is done at site. (1998)

5. A plate is connected to the flange of an ISMB as shown in figure. The factored load is
100 KN. Find the size of the weld. Assume shop welding and ultimate strength of
weld as 410 MPa. (2013)
6. Determine the size of the fillet weld of depth 250 mm required to join a bracket plate
with the flange of a column section if the bracket plate carries a load of 60 KN at a
distance of 150 mm from the face of the column flange. Load is acting perpendicular
to the plane of the joint. Assume site welding. (2011)
7. A welded bracket connection supports a factored load of 150 KN at a distance of 120
mm from the face of the column. The thickness of bracket plate is 12 mm. Load is
acting perpendicular to the plane of the joint. Design:
a) Fillet weld on two sides (2016)
b) Butt weld

TENSION MEMBERS

8. Design an unequal angle section to serve as a tie member of 1.6 m length in a roof
truss. It has to carry an axial load of 118 KN. The gusset plate is connected to the
longer leg of the angle. Also design the fillet weld. (2011)
9. Design a tie member of a roof truss to carry a factored axial load of 260 KN. The
length of the member is 2.8m. Also design the bolted connection for the same using
20 mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6.
10. A single ISA 100 x 75 x 10 mm is used as a tension member with the longer leg
connected to a 10 mm thick gusset plate. The connection is made with the help of a
lug angle. Design the connection and sketch the details. Use 20 mm diameter bolts of
grade 4.6. (1995)
11. Design a bolted splice to connect two plates, 20 cm wide, 20 mm thick and 20 cm
wide, 12mm thick carrying an axial tensile force of 500 KN. (1997)

COMPRESSION MEMBERS

12. A built up column consists of two ISMC 400 @ 94 N/m and two plates 500 mm x 10
mm. The clear distance between back to back of channels is 200 mm. One plate is
connected to each flange side. Determine the safe load carrying capacity of the section
if the unsupported length of the column is 5m. The column is restrained in position
but free in rotation at both ends. Also determine the change in safe load carrying
capacity if the effective length of column is increased to 6m. (1998)
13. Design a suitable built up section using two channels for a steel column to carry a
factored axial load of 1200 KN. The effective length of the column is 5.8 m. Provide
suitable single lacing system. Adopt 22 mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6. (2001)
14. An unequal angle section 200 mm x 150mm x 15 mm is to be used in a truss as a strut
of length 4.5 m. Determine the safe load on the member. (2009)
15. A steel column consisting of ISMB 400 has one end restrained against rotation and
translation, while the other end is restrained against translation only. Its unsupported
length is 5m. Determine its axial load carrying capacity at service loads. Do not use
tables given in code. (2014)
16. Check the top chord member of a bridge truss for its safety. It is 6m long and is
subjected to an axial compressive force of 600 KN. The cross sectional details of the
top chord members are as follows: 2ISMC 175, cover plate of 24 cm x 0.8 cm at the
top of the channel sections. The channels are facing back to back and the spacing of
the channels is 9 cm. Area of the entire cross section is 67.96 cm2. Neutral axis depth
from the top is 6.96 cm. (2005)
17. A stanchion of effective length of 6m consists of a built up twin box section using an
ISMB 250 with two plates of 260 mm x 10mm size welded each to the tips of the two
flanges of ISMB 250 on both sides of 250 mm depth with 4mm size fillet weld
continuous throughout. Determine the maximum permissible compressive load
including self weight of the stanchion. (2004)
18. A column of length 9.4 m is effectively held in position at both ends but not restrained
in direction. It is to be constructed using four equal angle sections ISA 100 X 100 X
10mm thickness. Determine a suitable arrangement to carry an axial load of 750 KN.
(1996)
Also design the battens for the above column.

BEAMS
19. Design a suitable laterally supported steel beam carrying a uniformly distributed load
of 60 kN/ m (including self weight) over an effective span of 12 m. Apply all checks.
(2013)
20. A beam ISMB 600 @ 123 kgf is supported over an effective pan of 9 m. Two floor
joists transmit floor loads at a distance of 1.5 m on either side of the mid span.
Determine the safe load which the two floor joists can transmit on the beam if the
beam is effectively restrained laterally by the floor joists. (2011)
21. Design a simply supported beam of span 3m. The beam is subjected to a factored
bending moment of 250 KNm and a factored shear force of 120 KN. The beam is
laterally unsupported.
22. A simply supported beam of span 5m is subjected to a factored maximum bending
moment of 200 kNm and a factored maximum shear force of 250 KN. The
compression flange of the beam is laterally supported. Design the beam.
