Rulebook

1. Chapter I – Preliminary

1.1. Short Title and Commencement:


a) These Rules may be called the Annual Ranking Moot Court Competition – Major Rules.
b) These Rules shall come into force from 01/11/2024.

1.2. Definitions: Unless otherwise provided, the words used in the Rules shall be construed as defined
hereinafter –
a) “Committee” means the IFIM Law School Moot Court Committee.
b) “Competition” means the Intra Moot Court Competition.
c) “Draw of Lots” means picking up chits by the teams to determine the competition's fixture.
d) “Hard Copy” refers to the printed version of the written submission submitted to the committee.
e) “Moot Proposition” means the case or the fact sheet released by the committee for the
competition.
f) “Oral Rounds” means the oral pleadings presented by the teams before the judges.
g) “Rules” means the Annual Ranking Moot Court Competition - Major Rules.
h) “Soft Copy” refers to the electronic version of the written submission to be uploaded on this
form - Memorial Submission.
i) “Unique Code” means the specific code that shall be provided to the registered individual
and used by the individual for all further communications.
j) “Written Submission” means the document prepared by the individual per Chapter IV of the
Rules.

2. Chapter II – Eligibility and Team Composition

2.1. Eligibility: All the students of IFIM Law School pursuing a five-year integrated course of BBA
LLB and three-year LLB are eligible to participate in the Annual Ranking Moot Court Competition
- Major.

2.2. Team Composition: Each team shall constitute a minimum of 2 Speakers or 2 Speakers and 1
Researcher. Only the team member(s) designated as Speakers shall be allowed to put forth oral
submissions.

2.3. Registration: The Registration shall be completed by filling out this Google form – Registration
Link. before the date of registration i.e., 9/12/2024 (9th December, 2024).

2.4. Allotment of Unique Code: Every individual registered for the competition shall be allotted a
unique code by 10/12/2024 (10th December, 2024) which they shall use for all further
communications with the Committee.

3. Chapter III – Format of the Competition

3.1. Orals Rounds:


a) The Competition will have two Preliminary rounds, Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals.
Each Team shall be arguing from both sides in the preliminary rounds. That side shall be
decided based on the draw of lots. Octa Finals may be conducted if more than 30 teams register
for the Competition.
b) Each Team shall be allotted a maximum time of 20 minutes and 25 minutes inclusive of time
for rebuttals and sur-rebuttals for Preliminary rounds and Quarter Finals respectively. The
teams will have 30 minutes and 40 minutes respectively for the Semi Finals and Finals.
c) Extra time shall be at the sole discretion of judges.
d) Speakers in the oral rounds shall be marked in accordance with the marking criteria as provided
under Schedule III of the Rules and as determined by the Committee from time to time.
e) Team Scores shall be calculated as follows:

Aggregate Team Score = Score of Speaker 1 + Score of Speaker 2

3.2. Arrangement of Ranking: The committee shall be declaring the following rankings:
a) Team Rankings: The teams shall be ranked based on the below-mentioned criterion-
i. The Team shall be first differentiated on their aggregate Team score as per Rule 6.
ii. In the case of a tie, the Team with the higher score in memorial rounds will be allotted
the higher rank.
iii. In case of a further tie, the Team with the higher score in Oral Rounds will be allotted
the higher rank.
iv. In case of a further tie, the Team whose speaker has the highest mark out of all the four
speakers will be allotted the higher rank.
b) Results: The results of the competition shall be declared on 22nd December 2024 during the
Valedictory Ceremony. The ranking and scores once declared shall be final and binding.

4. Chapter IV–Written Submissions

4.1. Written Submission:


a) The hard copy of the written submissions shall be submitted by the Teams before the Draw of
Lots.
b) The written submission shall be submitted in both soft copy and hard copy.
c) The soft copy shall be uploaded on this form - Memorial Submission on or before 8 PM on
18/12/2024.

4.2. Parameters for the Written Submission:


a) Each Team shall submit the written submission only containing pages as mentioned in Schedule
I of the rules.
a. Font Type: The text and footnote of the Written submission shall be in Times New
Roman.
b. Font Size: The font size of the text shall be 12 points while that of the footnotes shall be
10 points.
c. Line Spacing: The line spacing shall be 1.5 for the text and 1 for the footnotes.
d. Footnote Style: Bluebook style of footnoting shall be followed.
e. Color of Cover Page: The written submission from the side of the
Petitioner/Appellant/Complainant must have a blue cover page. On the other hand, the
written submission from the side of the Respondent/Defendant must have a red cover
page.

f. Unique Code: The written submission shall contain the unique code on the top-right
corner of the cover page and no other identification of the team/individuals shall be
there other than the unique code on the cover page.
g. The written submissions shall be marked on the parameters that are laid down under
Schedule II of the Rules and as determined by the committee.

4.3. Submission Soft Copy of Written Submission:


a) The soft copies of the written submissions shall be uploaded in .doc or .docx formats as well as
the pdf formats via Google form (Memorial Submission) on or before the notified date, i.e., 8
PM, 18/12/2024 (18th December, 2024).
b) The file shall be sent as an attachment and the file name shall be the unique code allotted and
the side, for example: “ARMMAJ-01 P/A/C” for Petitioner/Appellant/Complainant (or)
“ARMMAJ-01 R/D” for Respondent/Defendant.

4.4. Submission of Hard Copy of Written Submission: The teams are required to submit 3 hard
copies of each side of their written submission (Total – 6 copies) to the committee on or before 5
PM, 19/12/2024 (19th December, 2024).

4.5. Anonymity in Memorials:


a) Names of the participants must not be mentioned anywhere in the memorandum.
b) Any other mark, character, or text that reveals the identity of the individual is strictly prohibited.
c) Violation of this Rule shall attract a penalty, deemed fit by the Committee.

4.6. Plagiarism:
a) Individuals shall not commit plagiarism.
b) “Plagiarism” means the act of appropriating the literary composition of another, or parts or
passages of another’s writings, or the ideas or language of another, and passing them off as the
product of one’s own mind. If any Memorial is found plagiarized, the Committee reserves the
right to disqualify the plagiarizing Team from the competition.

5. Chapter V – Penalties

5.1. Penalty for Late Submission of Written Submission: If the individual fails to submit the written
submission within the time as stipulated by the committee, such Team shall have a deduction of
two marks per hour and per side in the memorial marks, subject to a maximum deduction
of 5 marks per day.

5.2. Penalty for Exceeding the Page Limit: If the individual exceeds the page limit of the
written submission under Schedule I, such an individual shall be penalized with a deduction of two
marks per extra page in the written submission.

5.3. Scouting:
a) No individual shall be allowed to hear or see the Oral Rounds of any other Team until the Oral
Round of that Team is completed.
b) If any individual is found indulging in scouting, his/her team shall be disqualified from the
Competition.

5.4. Punishment for Use of Unfair Means:


a) Any person found indulging in the use of any unfair means during the competition shall be
punished with disqualification from competition and shall be deemed to be ineligible for
participating in any National and International Moot Court Competitions notified by the
Committee during that academic year.
b) Provided that no punishment under this Rule shall be levied unless an opportunity to present
his/her case is given to the delinquent.

5.5. Punishment for Violation of Any Rule: Any person found in violation of any provisions of this
Rule, or any other Rules made by the Committee for the Competition shall be liable for punishment
of not less than a deduction of 10% of his/her team’s score but not more than deduction of
20% of his/her team’s score.

6. Chapter VI - Miscellaneous

6.1. Clarification: Any individual having any doubt regarding the moot proposition or registration, or
any other rule shall mail the same to [email protected] on or by 11/12/2024 (11th December, 2024).
In case of any discrepancy, the decision of the committee shall be final and irrevocable.

6.2. Copyright:
a) The copyright concerning the memorials submitted for participation in the Competition is
assigned by participants and shall also vest completely and fully with the Committee.
b) The participants shall certify the originality of the memorials, and the materials used and shall
be responsible for any claim or dispute arising out of further use and exhibition of these
materials.
c) The Committee shall have the right to publicly display, distribute either electronically or
otherwise and they shall not be responsible for any liability to any person for any loss caused
by errors or omissions in this collection of information, or for accuracy, completeness, or
adequacy of the information contained in these materials.

6.3. Power to Amend or Alter Rules:


a) The rules mentioned herein are not exhaustive.
b) The Committee reserves the right to alter, amend, or add to the rules mentioned herein at any
point in time.
c) All decisions made by the Committee in case of any disputes, doubts, or related issues shall be
final and binding.
d) Imposition of all penalties including disqualification in case of failure to comply with the rules
mentioned herein rests solely with the committee.

6.5. Dress Code: The participants shall adhere to the following dress code when present in any
courtroom during the Competition.
a) Ladies: White salwar and kurta or white shirt and black pants or skirt along with a black coat
and black shoes; and
b) Gentlemen: White shirt, black trousers, and black tie along with black coat and black
shoes.

6.6. Language: The language of the Competition shall be English only.
