weathering and erosion webquest
OVERVIEW: This activity will help you learn more about the processes and causes of
weathering and erosion and how they shape the earth’s surface. There will be several
websites for you to click on and a few animations to watch that demonstrate these
processes.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:
· Differentiate and describe the processes of weathering and erosion
· Differentiate and describe the processes of mechanical and chemical weathering
4. List the two types of weathering and list all examples. Be complete, you may use the textbook
as well.
b) mechanical weathering: the wind blows sand into a rock slowly breaking it down
5. Define deposition: when sediments are deposited or dropped of after being eroded.
After two of the earths tectonic plates collided water flowed slowly through the Colorado plateau
weathering the rocks around it leading to the canyon to grow bigger over a long time.
3. Complete the table below to explain how each factor affects weathering.
Plants Roots may grow into the cracks further expanding them.
People Use big tools like excavators, and terraform the land around
them
Wind, Waves, They happen over time slowly decaying the rocks
Gravity
Freezing and Water gets into crack then freezes and expands widening the
Thawing cracks.
Chemical
Water Slowly breaks down rocks due to the acid in the water
Oxygen oxygen causes rust which slowly decays metals and minerals
Carbon Dioxide Mixes with rain to make an acidic mixture that breaks down
(CO2) rocks
Living Organisms When plants decay they leave behind a chemical that slowly
weathers rocks
