Math 101 - 24/25 Fall - Worksheet for week 8

1. Identify the structure and compute the derivative, using the relevant rule(s), of each of the following functions.
(a) f (x) = 4 · 10x − x3 , (g) x(f ) = tan−1 (f 2 ),
(d) f (x) = sin−1 (x4 − x),
(b) f (x) = ln(ln(x2 + 1)), √ (h) g(f ) = cos−1 (f 4 − f ),
(e) f (x) = (x2 − 3 x)3x , g

(c) f (x) = ln 10 +2 , (f ) f (x) = x ln sin(x) + (cos(x)) , (i) θ(g) = 1 + .

2. The figure on the right is the graph of a function f . 4

(a) Find all the critical points of f . Hint: there are 7 of them. 3

(b) Classify, as local minimum, local maximum or neither, the points 2

found in Part (a).

(c) Identify the absolute minimum and maximum values of f , if they x
exist, and all the points where they occur.

3. A pyramid has height h and a square base with side x. The volume of a pyramid is V = 31 x2 h. If the height remains
fixed and the side of the base is decreasing by 0.02 m/year, at what rate is the volume decreasing when the height is
120 meters and the base side is 150 meters?
4. Challenging:
√ Try to find the slope of the tangent line to the curve defined by x2 + y 2 = 1 at the points (−1, −1) and
( 3/2, −1/2) in two different ways. Is something wrong somewhere, and why? Where there is no problem, is there a
third way to do it? And a fourth? How many of those methods can you use at (1, 0)?
5. [T/F] Decide if the following statements are true or false. Explain (or give a counterexample for) each answer.
(a) If (x, y) satisfies the equation y 2 + xy − 1 = 0, then dy/dx exists everywhere.
(b) If f is differentiable and lim f ′ (x) = 0, then f has a horizontal asymptote at +∞.
x→+∞
(c) If f is differentiable and has a horizontal asymptote at +∞, then lim f ′ (x) = 0.
x→+∞
