> The active part of the AIR unit consists of one or two RUs integrated into the same
enclosure as the antenna. It is connected to the RBS main unit and is intended to be
used in a Main-Remote configuration in the same fashion as conventional Remote
Radio Units (RRUs). The antenna in the AIR unit is a dual-polarized antenna.
> The passive part of the AIR unit allows connection to an existing RBS with the AIR
unit functioning as a standard antenna. The use of the passive part is optional
> Different installation alternatives are available
> All of the cells at the site are connected to a Digital Unit (DU) that provides
baseband processing for all cells and backhaul for the transport network. Supports
access technologies such as GSM, WCDMA, and LTE, or combinations thereof.
>Key benefits/advantages
- Best RF performance: (about 1 dB improvement for both up-link and down-link
compared to remote radio units)
- Best power efficiency
- Simplified installation: (~30% less man-hour for RRU + antenna configuration for 3-
sector site)
