It's the middle of may, i finish my dinner and check my messages.
There’s one from my
teacher. I instantly open it from my notifications. It's a congratulatory message with details for a Times of India Summer Training Program. I’m elated and I immediately rush to tell my parents about it. The test I had given, missing my AI exam, paid off! My mom pointed out the date and how it is colliding with my school trip to Manali. I was under the impression that I could do both. But I soon came to realize that I would have to miss one of the two. At first, the idea of missing my Manali trip felt like horror to me. But I knew that the training would be a huge opportunity for me in many ways. And as soon as I entered the Times of India building and saw the students there, I knew it was all worth it. These five days of training taught me about the thinking process behind writing an article taking into account what the reader finds interesting, not just you. The first day started out easy, our editor, Ms. Poonam Singh, introduced herself and her team. They talked to us about how it was important to read the newspaper not just to stay on top of the happenings of the world but to help with our comprehension skills and create consistency which would later help us in our lives. We were given the opportunity to present our views on different newspapers. Then we talked about different pages of a newspaper and how they suffice to every reader's interests’, we were then told to join a team for different pages. The five pages of the Times of India Student Edition were followed, page 1 being the page to cover the main events. Page 2, environment and technology, page 3, books and movies, page 4, lifestyle, page 5, wizards corner. As an avid reader, I decided to be a part of page 3 and I volunteered to be an editor of the same. For me, this position gave me a chance to connect with others while maintaining a strong persona. At the end of the first day, we had to submit an edit list (a list of articles we would add to our page). The editors were in charge of making the list and presenting it on time. I quickly managed to take everyone’s opinions and formed a list. The next day, we presented it. Everyone had a lively discussion and shared feedback on each other’s edit list. Like everyone’s our edit list required minor changes, which we took into account and learned about some areas which we had overlooked. Then we started working on our layout and design. By the time we were done, it was time to go home. Day 3rd was a visit to the PM museum, a house of treasure. It was extremely informative and interactive. Thanks to this program, I got a chance to visit a museum I had been longing to go to but never had the chance to. Day 4 was our busiest day. We rushed to the office and started working on our page. Everyone had prepared their articles, quizzes, etc. as planned before. After this day, I gained a whole new perspective on the job of an editor. The job wasn’t just till the articles were finished, that’s when it began. I had to make sure that we were on the right track, keeping in mind the deadline. This experience taught me how to work under pressure in a whole new way because I didn’t just have to manage myself, I had to manage an entire team. At the end of the day, we presented our pages. Everyone had done really well, including us. The last day was a visit to the press factory. Our parents were also invited, giving them a chance to also learn how they get their newspapers in the morning. For me, it was the most interesting day. We got to see how a newspaper is printed up close. We first had an interactive session where we were informed about what we were about to see in the factory. I was most fascinated by the colour separation process. All thanks to the teachers and TOI for making it happen. I couldn’t be more grateful to attend this esteemed program. It gave me the exposure I had been longing for. I had the chance to interact with peers with the same interests as mine and made many new friends. This training was everything I had hoped for and more. Thank you Gurleen Kaur, X-A
