ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT
SY 2021-2022

GRADE 8 PROJECT REAP (READING ENHANCEMENT ADAPTIVE

PROGRAM IN TIME OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC)

I. INTRODUCTION

Reading is part of an individual’s everyday life. It is the most

important skill to be mastered by a student because it is a
requirement in the process of teaching and learning. Inability to
read and comprehend the lesson will contribute to the low academic
performance of a student.
It is inevitable that there are high school students who are still
struggling to read. One of the factors that we see as teachers is that
they are not exposed to reading materials because of the lack of
resources and course the lack of instructional assistance from the
family.

II. INSTRUCTIONAL COMPETENCE

A. Teacher’s Accomplishment

Teachers play a vital role in the pedagogy of reading. The

accomplishments of teachers can prove to be a big part of the
contribution of the learnings of the students in learning to read.
Especially during the pandemic where limitations are set in the
teaching and learning process, the teachers should always make the
extra effort and go the extra mile in assisting students to practice
and exercise their reading ability.

1. identified non-readers and frustration level readers,

2. increased the learning opportunities of struggling readers.

B. Students Development

It is expected that students who underwent the program will

develop their reading skills through the following:

1. recognized word families,

During enrolment of the incoming grade 7 students, the enrollees are

required to read a short passage that will determine their reading status and
skills. The English Department uses materials and tools from Philippine Informal
Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) to distinguish if the enrollee is under Independent,
Instructional, Frustration, and Non-Reader level. It is inevitable that some still
can’t read and struggling. Thus, the NR section arises. This consist of students
who are assigned in the section for the continuation of drills and practices in
reading.
In the school year 2019-2020, two sections were referred to as grade 8
NR-Section consisting of 52 students. They are in the sections of 8-Langka and
8-Lanzones. Under frustration level, there are 41 males and 11 females. After
post-assessment, 25 of the males and 7 of the females are already at the
instructional level, only 16 males and 4 males are at the frustration level. 62%
improved after the school year.
The school year of 2020-2021 is when the pandemic arises. There was a
total of 55 students who continued in the NR section for grade 8. There is
difficulty in the administration of post-reading assessment because of the fear
of acquiring COVID-19. Through the effort and strategic planning of the grade 8
teachers, we can render. We have reduced the number of frustration level
readers to 20 males and 7 females, a total of 27. There are 16 instructional
readers and 12 are already independent readers. 49% improvement was
established during this pandemic.
Since there are no ways to assess the reading capabilities of new
enrollees, there are no NR sections formed last academic year. Thus, we are
tasked to communicate with the students through calls and chats for us to
assess their reading status. A total of 908 out of 1188 students were contacted.
These 908 students are considered because of their grade 7 general average
which should be 83 and below. They are also the only students we have
contacted through calls and chats for some families do not have cellphones. As
for the 908 students, we have contacted, there are still 15 students who are
under frustration level, 65 are instructional, 827 are independent and 1 is a
non-reader.
Because of the arising problems of literacy and fluency in reading, the
Division Office summoned Filipino and English teachers to come up with the
most effective reading interventions we could think of despite the pandemic.
Grade 8 teachers come up with PROJECT REAP, wherein the 16 struggling
readers will be thought of by their respective Sangguniang Kabataan
representatives and parents during the remote schooling. After post-
assessment, only 1 remains under frustration level, 15 are instructional and 892
are independent. 93% improvement has been established after the
intervention.

The pandemic made a major impact on the last school years for all of us
educators and many students. But we should never lose focus on what will be
the strategies we will make to recover the learning losses of our students.
