PBL Lesson Plan: Shapes and Measurement

Grade: 7

Duration: 1 Day (60 minutes)

Lesson Title:

Designing with Shapes: Applying Measurement in Real-Life Contexts

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students will:

1. Apply knowledge of geometric shapes to design solutions for real-world problems.

2. Calculate perimeter, area, and volume to make informed decisions.
3. Demonstrate critical thinking and creativity in solving practical challenges involving
shapes and measurements.

Materials Required:

 Rulers, protractors, graph paper

 Calculators
 Chart paper and markers
 Problem scenario handouts
 Laptops/tablets (optional for research)

Lesson Flow

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

 Hook: Show examples of structures or objects (e.g., a park layout, a pizza box) and ask:
o “What shapes can you identify?”
o “Why are measurements important in their design?”
 Context: Explain how shapes and measurements are integral to planning and design in
architecture, packaging, and landscaping.
 Objective: Students will work in groups to design solutions using shapes and apply
measurement concepts.

2. Problem Scenarios (30 minutes)

Instructions:

1. Divide the class into groups of 4–5.

2. Assign each group one of the following scenarios.

Group Task:

 Analyze the problem scenario.

 Use diagrams, measurements, and calculations to design a solution.
 Prepare a visual representation (drawing or digital design) and present findings.

3. Presentations (15 minutes)

 Groups present their designs, calculations, and rationale.

 Peer feedback: Evaluate creativity, accuracy, and feasibility.

4. Reflection and Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

 Class discussion: "How does understanding shapes and measurements help solve real-
world problems?"
 Highlight the role of math in making accurate, practical designs.

Assessment Criteria:

 Group Collaboration: Teamwork, idea-sharing, and task division.

 Mathematical Accuracy: Correctness in calculations and use of formulas.
 Design Presentation: Clarity, creativity, and alignment with the scenario's requirements.
