1. The cylinder bore of an eight- cylinder, four-stroke diesel


engine is 750 mm and the stroke is 1125 mm. The indicated
mean effective pressure in the cylinders is 1172 kN/𝑚2 when
the engine is running at 110 rev/min.
Calculate:
• The indicated power and the brake power if the
mechanical efficiency is 86%.

2. Calculate cylinders diameter and stroke of a six-cylinder,


two- stroke diesel engine to develop a brake power of 2250
kW at a rotational speed of 2 rev/s when the indicated mean
effective pressure in each cylinder is 10 bar. Assume a
mechanical efficiency of 84% and the length of stroke 25%
greater than the diameter of the cylinders.

3. 4-Cylinder, 2-stroke diesel engine with bore = 1.9 cm,


stroke =12.6cm, brake power = 88kW at 2000 R.P.M,
compression ratio = 18.1
Calculate:
• Clearance volume of cylinder.
• Torque.
• Brake mean effective pressure.

4. When developing a certain power, the brake specific fuel


consumption of a diesel engine is 0.225 kg/ kw.h and the
mechanical efficiency is 86%
Calculate:
• The indicated thermal efficiency.
• The Brake thermal efficiency.

5. A 4 cylinder, 4- stroke marine diesel engine have the


following parameters :
Rpm= 1200, Brake horse power= 25.6 hp, Indicated horse power=
30hp, L/D=1, Brake pressure= 5kg/𝑐𝑚2, BSFC=276gm/hp.hr,
CV=42000 kJ/kg
Calculate:
• L, D, Mechanical efficiency and thermal efficiency.

6. A 3-cylinder, 2-stroke marine diesel engine has 24cm bore,


28 cm stroke, 370 rpm, consuming 32.5 kg fuel in 45 min.

Calculate:
• Brake thermal efficiency if the brake pressure is 6
kg/cm & CV is 42000 KJ/kg.

7. A 4-stroke diesel generator set produce 1500 Kw has the


following data :
L/D=1.2, RPM=1000, bmep= 6 bar, BSFC= 200 gm/hp.hr,
N=8,

Calculate:
• BHP
• Fuel consumption for 12 hours.
• Cylinder bore & stroke.

8. A 10-cylinder, 5600 HP, 2 stroke, single acting marine diesel


engine has an indicating mean effective pressure, Pi=8
kg/𝑐𝑚2, If the mean piston feed, S= 6 m/sec and the cylinder
length diameter ratio (L/D)= 1.8, the mechanical efficiency
=0.89
Calculate:
• The piston diameter and stroke length.

9. An engine operates with excess air factor 1.5 and uses 100
kg/hr.
Calculate:
• Percent of excess air and air consumption.

10. 4 cylinder, 4 stroke diesel engines has a bore of 80mm


and a stroke of 65mm. Find the stroke volume (liters). If the
intake air conditions are 100Kpa and 300 K, and the engine
runs at 2400 RPM , Find the rate of air flow (Kg/h) for a
volumetric efficiency of 0.83. If the air to fuel ratio is 14:1
and the fuel heating value is 43 MJ/kg, Find the fuel power
(Kw), Find the indicated power (Kw) if the indicated thermal
efficiency is 0.32. Find the brake power for a mechanical
efficiency of 0.82. Find the frictional losses (Kw), mean
effective pressure (Kpa). And brake specific fuel
consumption (g/K w.hr).

11. A four-stroke diesel engine delivers a brake power of


44l.6 kW with a mechanical efficiency of 85 percent. The
measured fuel consumption is 160 kg of fuel in on hour and
air consumption is 410 kg during one sixth of an hour. The
heating value of the fuel is 42000 kJ/kg.

Calculate:
• Indicated power.
• Frictional power.
• Air-fuel ratio.
• Indicated thermal efficiency.
• Brake thermal efficiency.

12. A two-stroke diesel engine delivers a brake power


of368 kW while 73.6 kW is used to overcome the friction
losses. It consumes 180 kg/h of fuel at an air-fuel ratio of
20:1. The heating value of .the fuel is 42000 kJ/kg.

Calculate:
• Indicated power.
• Mechanical efficiency.
• Air consumption.
• Indicated thermal efficiency.
• Brake thermal efficiency.
