Based on NCERT Exercise 6.1
(Prepared by Amit Bajaj)
Q1. The amount of pollution content added in air in a city due to x-diesel vehicles is given by
P(x) = 0.005x3 + 0.02x2 + 30x. Find the marginal increase in pollution content when 3 diesel vehicles
are added.
Q2. The money to be spent for the welfare of the employees of a firm is proportional to the rate of
change of its total revenue (marginal revenue). If the total revenue (in rupees) received from the sale
of x units of a product is given by R(x) = 3x2 + 36x + 5, find the marginal revenue, which x = 5.
Q3. Find the points on the curve y 2 = 8x for which abscissa and ordinate change at the same rate.
Q4. Find the point on the curve y = x2, where the rate of change of x-coordinate is equal to the rate
of change of y-coordinate.

Q5. A particle moves along the curve y = x3 + 1 . Find the points on the curve at which y-coordinate
3
is changing twice as fast as x-coordinate.
Q6. For the curve y = 5x − 2x3, if x increases at the rate of 2 units/s, then find the rate of change of
the slope of the curve when x = 3.
Q7. The side of an equilateral triangle is increasing at the rate of 2 cm/s. At what rate is its area
increasing when the side of the triangle is 20 cm?
Q8. If the rate of change of volume of a sphere is equal to the rate of change of its radius, then
find the radius.
Q9. The volume of a cube increases at a constant rate. Prove that the increase in its surface area
varies inversely as the length of the side.
Q10. The radius r of a right circular cone is decreasing at the rate of 3 cm/minute and the height h
is increasing at the rate of 2 cm/minute. When r = 9 cm and h = 5 cm, find the rate of change of its
volume.
Q11. The surface area of a spherical bubble is increasing at the rate of 2cm2 / sec . Find the rate at
which the volume of the bubble is increasing at the instant its radius is 6 cm.
Q12. The radius of a spherical soap bubble is increasing at the rate of 0.2 cm/sec. Find the rate of
Q14. The area of an expanding rectangle is increasing at the rate of 48cm2 / sec . The length of the
rectangle is always equal to the square of breadth. At what rate, the length is increasing at the instant
when breadth is 4.5 cm?
Q15. Sand is being poured onto a conical pile at the constant rate of 50cm3 / min such that the height
of the cone is always one half of the radius of its base. How fast is the height of the pile increasing
when the sand is 5 cm deep.
Q16. A ladder 13 m long is leaning against a wall. The bottom of the ladder is dragged away from
the wall along the ground at the rate of 2 m/sec. How fast is the height on the wall decreasing when
the foot of ladder is 5 m away from the wall?
Q17. A man 180 cm tall, walks at a rate of 2 m/sec away, from a source of light that is 9m above
the ground. How fast is the length of his shadow increasing when he is 3m away from the base of
light?
