A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson the students should be able to:
a. Define inductive and deductive reasoning
b. Construct the conclusion of the given statement
c. Relate inductive and deductive reasoning
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Inductive and Deductive Reasoning
Material(s): Visual Aid, Laptop, Activity sheets
Reference(s): Practical Mathematics Book
Values Integration: Perseverance and Critical thinking
Strategy(s): Discussion, Hands-On Activities

III. PROCEDURE

TEACHER’s ACTIVITY(s) STUDENTS’s ACTIVITY(s)

A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES

PRAYER
Please all stand, let’s begin this day by prayer.
(All students will pray spiritually)
GREETINGS

Good Morning, Class! Good Morning, ma’am!

“How are you today? “ We’re fine!

Nice to hear that!

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Before you take your seats, please pick up the pieces of paper (Students are picking up the pieces
under your chairs and please arrange your chairs properly. of dirt inside of the learning area)

CHECKING OF ATTENDANCE

Once I call your name please raise your hand and say present. (The students will raise their hand
and say present)

REVIEW:

Now, can anyone tell me, what was our discussion all about?
And what do you learn about the topic?
"Our past discussion was about
Yes, Please? biconditional statements in logic.
We learned how to identify and
use them."

Okay, Very Good.

MOTIVATION: “The Mystery Bag”

Today, we are going to proceed to our next topic, but
before that let's first have a short game."

A. ACTIVITY:
“ Today, we’re going to play a fun game called “The mystery
bag”. Inside this bag, I have a few items and I’m going to give
you some clues about one of them. Your job is to guess what’s
inside based on those clues.’’ As you make guesses, you’re
looking at specific clues to make a general guess about the
item. Let’s see if you can figure it out!

Did you understand, Class?

“Yes, ma’am!”

B. ANALYSIS
From the activity we have conducted , what have you observe?

Very good! The activity we have conducted has something to

do with our topic. Since we are talking about reasoning and
observation.

Based on your observation, what do you think our topic? I observe that sometimes we
guessed correctly even with just a
few clues but other times we
needed more information

Very good!

 “Let’s start with inductive reasoning. This type of

reasoning moves from specific observations to a
generalized conclusion.

For example; if you’ve seen five students wearing white

uniforms every Friday, you might conclude that students wear
white uniforms every Friday’’
“ So inductive reasoning uses
examples to make a general
Yes, but remember inductive conclusion are not always rule?’’
certain.
Now, let’s move to deductive reasoning.
 Deductive reasoning works the opposite way. It starts with
a general rule and applies it to a specific case.

For example: All mammals have lungs. A whale is a mammal. “So deductive reasoning is like
Therefore, a whale has lungs.’’ solving a problem by applying a

rule?”

That’s correct! Deductive reasoning leads to certain

conclusion as long as the premises are true.”

Let’s compare the two reasoning methods.

Inductive reasoning Deductive reasoning

C. ABSTRACTION
Now that we’ve learned about inductive and deductive
reasoning, let’s try applying what we’ve discussed I’ll give
you to classify each one as either inductive and deductive
reasoning. Let’s analyze them together.

1. Every basketball game I’ve watched had a halftime

show. Therefore, all basketball games have halftime shows.

2. All birds have feathers. A sparrow is a bird. Therefore, Inductive

a sparrow has feathers.
Deductive
3.I’ve seen three rainy days in November. So, November
must be a rainy month.
Inductive
Very good!

“Based on our discussion and activities today, can anyone

summarize what inductive reasoning is?’’

“Inductive reasoning starts with

specific observation and forms a
general conclusion, but the
“Great! Now, what about deductive reasoning?” conclusion might not always be
true”

“Deductive reasoning starts with a

general rule and applies it to a
“Exactly! So, both inductive and deductive reasoning are specific situation to come to a
useful in solving problem and making decision. Inductive definite conclusion.”
reasoning helps us make prediction or hypotheses, while
deductive reasoning ensures logical and certain conclusions if
the rule is true.”

D. APPLICATION
“Reasoning Detectives: Classifying Inductive and
Deductive Thinking”
1. Divide the class into 3 groups

2. Provide each group with a set of scenarios(written on

strips or paper)
3. Each group will:
 Discuss each scenario
 Decide whether the reasoning in the scenario is inductive
or deductive.
 Write down their explanation for their classification.
4. After discussion time(3-5 minutes), each group will
present their answers to the class.

V. EVALUATION
 Read each statement carefully.
 Identify whether the statement uses inductive or deductive reasoning.
 Write your answer and provide a short explanation for your choice.
Questions:

1. All cats have whiskers. My pets is a cat. Therefore, my pet has whiskers.
2. I’ve seen four students in our class wearing red shirts today. So, red must be the favorite color
of the most students in this class.
3. If the rains, the ground gets wet. It is raining now. Therefore ,the ground is wet.
4. I’ve noticed that every time I eat mangoes, I get an itchy throat. Therefore, I must be allergic
to mangoes.
5. All even numbers can be divided by 2.Eight is an even number. Therefore, eight an be
divided by 2.

VI. ASSIGNMENT

1.Write 2 examples of inductive reasoning and 2 examples of deductive reasoning based on real-
life situations.
