Title: analyzing the story of “psychological theory and women’s development” by carol Gilligan
This research is about psychological theory and women’s development. In this article, she made
one question about “Should Mr. Heinz steal the drug? Because his wife is sick.” and came out
with two different perspectives about what is right. She considered two children Amy and Jake.
They were in the same 6th grade with the same experience and knowledge but they showed two
different ways of thinking regarding the question. In this essay, I am exploring the research
analysis
Firstly, in this story, she found out two different perspectives to solve the problem. Jake focused
only on whether Heinz should or should not. He brought logical reasoning and thought logically
to solve the problem. However, Amy focused on whether Heinz steal or not steal the drug. She
thought morally and based on care, relationship, and empathy.
Secondly, the assumption in the reading shows that logical reasoning is based on rules and
principles, and moral reasoning is based on care and relationships. Also, the reading assumes that
being logical and following the rules is the best way to be moral. But Amy’s caring approach to
the case shows only morals but it is not the best way to be moral. Amy’s moral perspective
deconstructed the idea of being logical. Her focus on relationships and thinking about other
feelings like our actions affect other feelings shows the other way of thinking to solve that
problem. It challenged the traditional notions of moral development.
Thirdly, the story of Amy and Jake highlights that it's very important to include different
perspectives. No matter what they think is right or wrong. This shows the contradictions.
Moreover, the story tells us that we should focus on everyone's perspectives and include all
people consider their moral perspectives, and understand them to better promote morality.
Finally, Amy’s idea is a kind of feminine quality that is not acceptable to society. That is why
society doesn't appreciate Amy’s idea and her idea might be left out. By understanding others'
perspectives and encouraging us to listen to her voice and others we should practice moral
education. In this world, there are so many differences between people. We should listen to
everyone’s ideas to value and include them as being good. Being good does not mean to follow
only rules. To be good we should care about others and understand other's feelings.
In conclusion, this reading has one message for us to be good. We should respect differences
among people and value them. We should consider everyone to give them the feeling that they
are important. To make a good society we should include everyone with their different ideas and
perspectives. No one is the same.
Title: The Yellow Wallpaper
The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story written by Charlotte Perkins Stetson. This story is about a
woman who suffers from depression. She was in a room with yellow wallpaper and she did not
want to stay there because she saw so many patterns on the wallpaper. Her husband was a doctor
and wanted her to stay in that room and take a rest. Because of this issue, her mental well-being
has become worse. It explores themes like feeling trapped, gender roles, and how women's
choices can be suppressed in a society that favors men. It also shows how women's mental health
can be worse due to not taking their condition seriously. In this essay, I want to analyze the
story.
Firstly, we can see a clear feminism concern in this story. In this story how a woman struggles
unfairly in that room because of her husband. That means women always fight against the wrong
expectations that society imposes on them as women and how it has so many bad impacts on
their mental health and overall well-being. It also shows the power of men on women that she
could not do what she liked. In this story, there are some assumptions and it is based on society's
bad expectations. Society decided what women should do how women should behave and with
whom they should interact. For example, in this story, the woman's husband decided that she
should stay in that room and take a rest without considering her feelings and emotions and that is
rational and controlling over emotions and shows her wife is irrational and not capable of
making decisions. That causes the protagonist's feelings and experiences. She only satisfied her
husband by obeying him.
Secondly, this story deconstructs the idea that women should accept the roles that society gave
them and that women should hide their feelings. That is taking their freedom away from them
only because of society's expectations and controlling them. Women do not have freedom and
control over their bodies and minds. This story wallpaper is a symbol of society's oppression of
women throughout history.
Thirdly, in the yellow wallpaper, there is a conflict between the woman's emotions and feelings
and the way others see her. She was in that room for a long time and finally, she found freedom
by having a connection with wallpaper but others see her as abnormal and crazy. These are
protagonists between society and personal life. This story shows the pressure of society on
women's mental health and autonomy and how they are victims of these beliefs. We should listen
to them and understand their emotions and feelings in this story the woman is interested in
writing but her husband despises her for doing this. Instead of this attitude towards her and
calling her an irrational creature he should care about her feelings.
Finally, the story of the yellow wallpaper declares how society normalizes the beliefs that men
are superior to women and knows more than women which completely shows women are
excluded. Their perspectives, choices, and desires are not priorities. On the other hand, men are
dominant in every aspect of life. In this story, John represents the exclusionary force. Moreover,
this story shows gender inequality and discrimination. For example, in our country, even women
cannot go outside of the house without a male component. This story has a message that we
should not keep quiet, we should fight for our desires and we should prove that we are a part of
society we should include our voice and perspective and others should accept it.
To sum up, we should let women have the right to make their own decisions. We should not put
pressure or force on them by having other expectations and not let them accept the roles and
behaviors that society expects. Let them live in the way they want.
