on this Question Paper.

Section 1: Directed Writing

Question 1

Imagine that you are trying to decide whether or not to apply for a university place. A relative has
sent you the information in the two passages.

Write a letter to your relative in response to what you have read.

In your letter you should:

• evaluate the opinions and ideas about going to university in the two passages
• explain whether or not you think going to university might be useful for you.

Base your letter on what you have read in the article and extract, but be careful to use your own
words. Address each of the bullet points.

Begin your letter, ‘Dear …’

Write about 250 to 350 words.

Up to 10 marks are available for the content of your answer, and up to 15 marks for the
quality of your writing.

My decision of whether or not i should go to university is a very important one, and you helping

I took a few days to respond because i was evaluating the pros and cons of going to university.

First of all, i realised that if i go to a university, i'd get the advantage of knowing what my true skills

A successfull time at university will also help me skills for future job oppurtunities, and maybe i can

even have a career advisor!

However, i also have some concerns, like the financial cost of even going to a university!

The student debt that i could have honestly scares me, as financially, my family isn't

in a good spot.

Along with that, if i don't choose to go, i could have 3-4 years to really try something i'd love to d

and build a career in a preffered field. It would also be a very good time to already start earning.

So, after all these pros and cons, your help, and personal thoughtm i've decided to go to

I felt that it was the most obvious choice, as i have legacy there, and i'd really like to enhance

my skills. Sure it will come at a cost, but once i start earning, i'd be set!
