SECTION–A
1. (a) Define metal and metallurgy. Write down the necessity of metallurgical 10
development in brief.
(b) Calculate the spacings between (111) planes in (i) A cubic crystal (a= 10.0A0), 10
(ii) An orthorhombic crystal (a= 5.0A0, b= 6.0A0, c= 8.0A0) and (iii) A
monoclinic crystal with (a= 5.0A0, b= 6.0A0, c= 8.0A0, and β= 600).
(c) Show that the void space of the unit cell of HCP structure is 26%. 10
2. (a) Bismuth (melting point 5200F) and cadmium (melting point 6100F) are assumed 20
to be completely soluble in the liquid state and completely insoluble in the solid
state. They from a eutectic at 2700F containing 40% cadmium.
i) Draw the equilibrium diagram to scale on a piece of graph paper
labeling all points, line and areas.
ii) For an alloy containing 65% cadmium; gives the temperature of
initial solidification and gives the chemical composition and relative
amounts of the phases present at a temperature of 1200F.
(b) Differentiate between minerals and ores. Write down the advantages and 10
disadvantages of gravity separation method over magnetic separation method of
extraction.
3. (a) Describe the lever rule as applied to equilibrium diagram by taking an example. 15
(b) Explain the significance of eutectic, eutectoid and peritectic transformation in 15
iron-iron carbide equilibrium diagram.
SECTION–B
6. (a) Define hard case or effective case. What are the advantages of gas carburizing 10
compared with pack carburizing?
(b) What is powder metallurgy? Discuss the importance of particle shape on the 10
properties of sintered compacts.
(c) Distinguish between normalizing and annealing process. 10
