II. CONTENT
Small Intestine: The longest part of the digestive system it extends (about 18 feet (6.5
meters) long and folds many times to fit in the abdomen) from the stomach (pylorus) to
the large intestine (cecum) and consists of three parts: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
It is where most of the absorption of nutrients from food takes place receives bile and
pancreatic juice through the pancreatic duct to aid in digestion
Large Intestine: The final section of the gastrointestinal tract and about 5 feet (1. 5 m)
in length and 2. 5 inches (6-7 cm) in diameter in the living body. It is most responsible
for the absorption of water and vitamins from the indigestible residue of food and
converting into feces
Rectum: The end of the digestive tract. It holds the feces until you push it out of the
body, through the anal canal, by having a bowel movement.
Liver: An organ about the size of a football. It sits just under your rib cage on the right
side of your abdomen. It is essential for digesting food and ridding your body of toxic
substances.
Gallbladder: A small pouch that sits just under the liver. It stores bile produced by the
liver.

Digestive System
a group of organs that help the body break down and absorb food
organs working together in converting food into energy and other basic nutrients to power the body
the sum of the gastrointestinal tract and accessory organs
Mouth: The upper opening of the digestive tract, beginning with the lips and
containing the teeth, gums, and tongue. Foodstuffs are broken down
mechanically here by chewing and saliva is added as a lubricant.
Small Intestine: The longest part of the digestive system it extends (about 18 feet (6.5 meters) long and folds

Gallbladder: A small pouch that sits just under the liver. It stores bile produced by the liver.
Pancreas: The pancreas is a gland organ. It is located in the abdomen. It produces insulin and other important
enzymes and hormones that help break down foods.
